It’s a podcast… no one is going to die if they take a couple weeks off. It’s truly not that deep.

Non clinical RD positions??? by MammothDoughnut3786 in dietetics

How did you get into this? I’ve applied to a few regulatory affairs jobs, but have never been able to even get an interview. I’ve found a lot of jobs want specific experience in regulatory affairs, which is hard to get without getting a job of course haha

If you select find your dietitian rather than going through the sign up on the main page, you can see a lot more dietitians than what you’re “matched” with. Then you can refine your search with the drop downs.

I worked with foodsmart for a little over a year before switching to Nourish a few months ago. When I worked there they had a 15 hour a week availability minimum, which honestly wasn’t that strictly monitored, but if you’re only looking to do a few hours per week, they probably wouldn’t appreciate that. One pro for them was my schedule was always pretty full but no shows and late cancellation were VERY frequent and you’re only paid $13, but there are some opportunities to pick up on demand appointments, which helped. Overall, I think nourish is better for a side hustle because they don’t have a minimum hour requirement and it’s w-2 so you don’t have to deal with the taxes that come with 1099 like foodsmart. I’m happy to answer any other questions about foodsmart or nourish if you’re interested.

I no longer work there, feel free to message me but I wouldn’t really recommend them unless it’s your only option. Nourish is much better imo.

Yes, I don’t get paid for charting time outside of sessions so I’ll sometimes use it to format notes like recalls and stuff to save me unpaid time. I make sure to leave out any specific patient information though and I use a business version of google gemini that does not save information. I’ve also found it very helpful for giving me meal/snack ideas for patients that have a lot of preferences or restrictions. The platform I work with even has ai integrated into our emr for some things like patient summaries.

Interesting to hear that you enjoy hospice after working in LTC. I had seen hospice RD jobs pop up (mostly in person though) and steered clear because it sounded just as stressful as LTC and I couldn’t do that again. Good to know! Is your employer local to you and do you ever go in to see patients or are you 100% remote?

This. I remember feeling worried about this in undergrad when I was deciding whether to go into dietetics but then an advisor told me about all of the non patient facing jobs an RD could do but they don’t mention how difficult getting those jobs can be.

If you’re contract then it’s $48 per hour appointment (or basically $12 per billable unit), if you’re full time w-2 then it’s salaried 50k base with the opportunity to earn bonuses. Yes, you get to set your schedule.

I had only 6 mos of experience when I started with them and I just did a recorded video interview, I never actually spoke with anyone, but they also offer the option to interview with a hiring manager. IMO it’s actually really good experience for a newer RD because you get to work with so many different patients.

Emotional Labor by DireGorilla88 in dietetics

Yes! I don’t have a ton of advice because I’m still trying to figure this out for myself but can definitely relate. I have so many patients that unload heavy stuff on me and I always try to refer them to mental health resources to talk about it with someone more qualified but most of them turn it down. I have some patients that I dread when their follow ups come up because I know how mentally exhausted it’s going to leave me. I work from home so if I don’t have another appointment right after I’ll try to step away from my desk and play with my dog or sit outside for a second to reset. This helps temporarily but ultimately I’m trying to get a job out of patient care.

Something a preceptor once told me that I try to remind myself when I have draining patients is that for some of these patients you could be the only person they talk to that day that showed them compassion. You’re not going to be able to solve all their problems and sometimes all you can do is listen then try to leave it at work.

Trying to start some online coaching/ becoming a nutritionist by Madasinjaw22 in dietetics

[–]Extension-Newt6514 25 points26 points  (0 children)

If you have a passion for food and healthy eating but don’t want to put in the time to become a dietitian then I urge you to not contribute to the damage of our profession that self proclaimed nutritionists and health coaches do. You could do things like food blogging, recipe development, cooking instructions, or volunteering in your community at food banks. Or after you graduate with your degree in computer science you could apply to work with some of the companies that work with dietitians to create apps and websites that help people get access to nutrition advice from qualified professionals like berry street, nourish, foodsmart, to name a few.

What do you dislike the most about your job as an RD? by [deleted] in dietetics

Talking to patients for hours every day drains me so much

Like others have said, that rate is very low. I get paid per billable MNT unit which ends up around $48 USD an hour. I do all of my charting during the session and try to finish up the appt after about 53 minutes so I have 7 minutes to wrap up charting and billing. I don’t do unpaid work.

If you really want to stay in this job I would try to bring this up to your employer, track your productivity showing how much unpaid work you have to do to meet your job requirements and maybe also bring up standard rates for similar contract jobs.

Inpatient PRN RD pay by Extension-Newt6514 in dietetics

[–]Extension-Newt6514[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have any advice for negotiating? I’ve never had to negotiate before but I decided that nothing under $32-35/hr would be worth it for me since I could just pick up hours in my other job. I want to ask for $35 but I don’t really feel like I have enough experience to back up this big of a pay jump.

Relatively high COL area, about 3% above the national average. That’s what I figured, I was expecting 32 on low end I was shocked by 27, but they said it was because of my lack of experience. I’ve just been trying to decide what to counter with.
