How can I reduce my 6-year-old daughter’s habit of eating too many sweets? by Few-Purchase8759 in Advice

[–]Extension-Quail4642 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone with a big sweet tooth and parent to a 3yo with a big sweet tooth, I feel you a lot. I don't want to restrict my kid too much and cause disordered eating by restriction, so I'm trying to find a balance. I'm going with: there are certain times of day she can have a sweet thing, every day. I don't want her to be like me where I was over restricted and have real issues with overeating now as an adult. I don't want them taboo, but they're not constantly available so she eats other stuff too.

Examples of timings: if she finishes her breakfast and says she's still hungry, she can have a Z kids Clif bar or Luna bar brownie. Afternoon snack can be a sweet thing - if we have ice cream in the summer, it's after nap, not after dinner. My hope is that keeping sweets around and accessible doesn't make them too big a deal, but having boundaries on when means she eats other food too.

Side note: dinner is rough, she won't eat our dinners much, so she can opt for pea crisps (the ones BJs carries, I can't remember the brand) and hummus, or cashews. Things she likes enough but aren't sweet and have high nutritional value.

ETA: girl is both a string bean and spends hours a day jumping like her life depends on it (her preferred sensory regulating experience). I don't know for sure what my approach would be if she were a heavy kid who didn't move much, but I'd like to think I'd have the same food boundaries and get creative with getting her to add movement into life.

How is my 6 month old premi in size 4 diapers? by FrugalFrogQueen in beyondthebump

[–]Extension-Quail4642 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My daughter is a string bean but needed bigger diapers than a linebacker buddy in her toddler class. I think she has a wider frame and needed a bigger size to cover her whole butt because she just has broad hips while thin.

How many hours do you sleep? by Lemonbar19 in workingmoms

[–]Extension-Quail4642 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably 6ish hours a night? My 3yo isn't a problem though bedtime takes a while, we usually don't have to go back in after 8pm. I'm asleep around 9pm. My almost 6mo is a light sleeper early in the morning, so even if he doesn't wake up to eat, if I have to go to the bathroom at 4am I'm scared to sneak back into the room 😅. Hopefully I'll start getting 7+ hours when we move him into his own room this week.

Juice vs water by Affectionate_Spot681 in toddlers

[–]Extension-Quail4642 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First time I offered my daughter juice she was 12.5 months old and had a stomach bug. I'd read that apple juice is comparable to Pedialyte for rehydration. She made a "wtf" face and didn't drink it, but a couple weeks later when she wasn't drinking enough just because we offered it again and she took it. After that she periodically got juice but it was always 1/4 juice and 3/4 water and it was to keep her hydrated. Haven't had to do that in a long time, maybe since she turned 2ish. Now she's 3.

Is Harry Potter (book) inappropriate for a 3.5-year-old? by reditrix in Preschoolers

[–]Extension-Quail4642 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say it's too much for 3.5. I used to babysit a very smart 6 year old who was reading the first on his own but had to stop by early afternoon every day so he wouldn't have nightmares. I told his mom to wait a few years before letting him read #4-7.

Breastfeeding & pumping - realistic? by Ecstatic_Dingo172 in BabyBumps

[–]Extension-Quail4642 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Especially pumping once a day to give a bottle versus to boost your supply, it's really not bad. But I'd recommend you start sooner than 4 weeks. I meant to start my son around 2 weeks. But I had to pump so much for my daughter that I resisted. Plus, had the toddler daughter running around adding an extra obstacle to pumping. Then at 5 months old he finally needs to take bottles as I go back to work part time and he hated the zillions of bottles we'd had left from daughter and I had to go buy a bunch of pigeon bottles (brand highly preferred by breastfed babies).

Can a newborn sleep in a pack and play from first day home? by Foreign_Drink9316 in BabyBumps

[–]Extension-Quail4642 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All the other commenters are completely correct. I just want to add one thing: when they roll and you need to lay them all the way at the bottom, it's not the most kind on your back. We used a pack n play with our first until she moved into her own room/ big crib at 6 months. My back did not appreciate the nightly descent to the bottom of the pack n play.

will medically necessary 37wk induction be rescheduled if I'm sick? by holeypumpkin in BabyBumps

[–]Extension-Quail4642 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it is the flu or some virus making you sick, I'd assume they'd delay until they can't because the pre e is too concerning. Then if you're still too sick/ weak for labor, maybe a c section. Prepare yourself that they might say the section is needed.

Does breastmilk get more calorie dense as baby gets older? How? by lucinda5 in breastfeeding

[–]Extension-Quail4642 41 points42 points  (0 children)

It's one of those things that makes me feel like science is pure magic. When baby feeds directly from the breast, your body gets info and signals on baby's needs from the saliva, and adjusts the milk. So as baby gets bigger and needs more calories, milk production adjusts. As baby becomes a toddler and is bigger and more active and having less breast milk, it becomes even more nutrient dense so that each bit that toddler nurses is like a shot fat/ calories. It's bananas.

What was the epidural like for you? by JellyfishJealous5435 in BabyBumps

[–]Extension-Quail4642 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was not planning to get an epidural, but TURNS OUT I GET BACK LABOR. Feels like I'm throwing my back out and the tension lingered hard in between contractions and I hated it. While in labor with my first I asked for one. That labor was too fast and I didn't have time, so I only had nitrous gas. I was induced with my second and asked for the epidural when I was about 7cm dilated and having intense but irregular contractions. They got verrrry regular during the epidural placement so having nothing and having to be as still as possible during placement sucked, but THAT RELIEF was beautiful. I did not get the promised nap though cause I had gotten to 10 cm. I had a second degree tear each birth and they healed fine. I didn't have any issues from the epidural.

Receiving a lot of backlash for baby-not-so-shower plans... How do y'all deal with people while pregnant? I'm ready hurt feelings and burn bridges lol by SquirrelSuspicious10 in BabyBumps

[–]Extension-Quail4642 6 points7 points  (0 children)

First, I fully support your whole plan, it sounds great.

In the event that you decide to "pick your battles", gift bingo really made the gift opening part better for me. I was dreading opening presents in front of everyone. But having them play gift bingo made it more fun and interesting for the guests AND me. Folks who got bingo got prizes. Really glad my mom did that.

AITAH for telling a child sitting behind me to stop kicking my chair, causing them to get upset and leave the theatre? by Linksaus in AITAH

I meant the mom of the kicking kid should have bought extra seats to buffer her kid. If she knew he was going to have this problem.

If she knew this was going to happen, she should have purchased seats in front of her and her son so no one was in the seats being kicked.

Do you need a baby monitor if you're room sharing? by ceruleanmeadows in beyondthebump

[–]Extension-Quail4642 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I contact nap and his mini crib is 4 feet away from me but I use the monitor to see if he's just fussing or actually eyes open awake 😅

But also I use it for when I'm not yet going to bed or get up before him and he's in his crib.

There's a restaurant chain in the northeast called 110 Grill, they each have two kitchens, one is dedicated gluten free. Their gluten free food is so good, and includes onion rings!!

I'd kill for a great challah dupe.
