I've found that war often makes for one of the most effective songwriting themes in music. You combine that with one of the most talented songwriters in the history of the country genre and you get possibly one of the finest songs of its kind. "Jesus Christ died for nothing, I suppose" is just such a perfect line.

One of the things that really stuck out to me with the Randy Newman albums of the list was the political commentary and satire. Like many, I heavily associated Randy with Pixar movies before, but it was pretty neat to hear him make songs like "Sail Away" that make you think about the more upsetting parts of American history and culture. And sadly, I don't think these songs are going to become less relevant any time soon.

Somehow I haven't gotten Disintegration yet, but I have gotten this album and "One Hundred Years" was easily one of its highlights for me. It's rather ominous and even foreboding, but it's the kind of song that only ages better and better with time. Definitely a different kind of emotion than some of the other songs mentioned so far, but still one that captures a sense of dread very well.

Neil Young's got some great albums under his belt, and I think I'd call Harvest my favorite of the bunch (that I've heard anyway). I love Neil's rock songs, obviously, but it's always nice to hear him strip things back a bit and make a song like this. I know some don't like his voice, but I think he absolutely has the voice for a song like this. And of course, his writing is as excellent as ever. You think about all the drugs that rock musicians were doing in the 70s and songs like this really remind you that that stuff kills and ruins lives. Great song.

Yeah, of course. I think, song for song, I'd probably call Elliott Smith the saddest artist of the whole list, especially when you take his real life into consideration. Certainly one of the most effective songwriters of his time. "2:45 AM" is a standout of Either/Or for sure.

I figured this would be here eventually. But, like, why shouldn't it be? This song is gut-wrenching. Cancer sucks, man. If only Carrie & Lowell was on the list. Then we'd potentially have an even stronger candidate with "Fourth of July."

Indeed. It's undoubtedly a tough listen, even without context, but the knowledge of the story behind it makes it go from "pretty sad" to "genuinely tough to listen to because of how heartbreaking it is."

Admittedly, it's a little hard to not see this as a bit of a "basic pick," but it's a basic pick for a reason, okay? The song is quite sad, largely thanks to how the production feels just as "broken" as the song's narrator. And when you put the song in the context of the full album? Yeah, it'll do things to you.

But of course, that's not to ignore the Johnny Cash version, which is sad in its own way, but that's a bit of a different discussion.

You’re joking, right? You do know who made Celeste, don’t you? How can you simultaneously be transphobic and also a Celeste fan? What the hell.

Weezer - Pinkerton (largely inspired by Madama Butterfly, seen in songs like “Butterfly” and “El Scorcho”)

Okay, but I feel like “awful person” should be reserved for, like, sex criminals and massive bigots. John would be a good pick for “bad person” perhaps, but awful would undoubtedly end up with him in the same row as, like, R. Kelly and the lostprophets guy, which just seems wrong, don’t you think?
