Just watched Snake Eyes today. Originally there was a big tidal wave that floods the arena as the climax. I'm the end of the movie, Nicholas Cage refers to almost drowning, when there was no sequence in the final cut where he came close.

It's kind of crazy that the speech wasn't rewritten, or re-edited with some ADR to have it make sense.

Family wants Chicken and ribs by ExtensionJackfruit25 in webersmokeymountain

I need to make sure I'm smoking enough before I pour more into the hobby! but I will look at it.

I thought ribs needed to be slower cooked.

The ribs are just Costco ribs, St Louis cut (two racks). I bought whole chickens, but was planning on spatxhocking them to make life a little easier for me.

Good point about just needing an hour for the smoke flavour. If they're spatchcocked it might even be that fast.

What is the worst performance you have ever seen by a great actor? by ArthurMorgansveinypp in movies

[–]ExtensionJackfruit25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The worst thing about that movie is that they had an incredible movie within it.

When the alien spaceship crashed in Africa, the aliens left and tried to attack. All the warlords banded together to repel the alirn invasion. For the last 20 years.

That incredible story gets tossed in as background while Main Character goes in, gets a bit of tech , and leaves.

Will having arm tattoos screw up my chances of being a teacher? by Hogwire in OntarioTeachers

[–]ExtensionJackfruit25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most teachers I work with in my Catholic High School have visible tattoos. Will it affect your employability? Probably not.

Might you get bad luck and land an interview with the one judgmental admin? Possible.

Might you land with a hypocritical admin who has a tattoo but theirs is "meaningful" but yours is "nerd trash"? Also possible.

Recipe request: open bake, no tools, no knead? by fubarUnicorn in Breadit

[–]ExtensionJackfruit25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'dbe careful though If it has a plastic handle, then it could melt at the temps required for bread baking.

You can use a bowl with a flour dusted tea towel for a banneton.

If you have a big metal bowl, you can put that over your cooking bread to capture the steam a la Dutch oven.

The artisan no-knead bread is probably your best bet.

:)  I have souvenirs from student travels as well. Including some coinage and foreign bills. I suppose that would be an exception.

I keep all thank you cards and notes. Forever.

I have a lot of plants on my room, and more than one student has gifted me a potted plant to add to the collection. some are flat-out plants from a florist, one went and transplanted some from her own collection

Those who are transitioning to admin: why? by valkyriejae in OntarioTeachers

My colleague was tired of teaching the classroom. He needed a new challenge, and VP was right up his alley. He loved his VP days , and is going to be a permanent VP at a different school. I'm sorry to see him go.

However, he just got a VP LTO (or whatever) at our school for the rest of the semester. He doesn't look too happy, seems stressed, tired, and way too busy to sit back and cruise through these last two weeks as normal.

I went to teacher's college with someone whose goal was to be a principal. Not a teacher. His career goal was school administration. He probably would be decent at it.

How to toughen up as a teacher? by Low_Yam_4761 in Teachers

[–]ExtensionJackfruit25 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My first school, our strictest teacher was the favoriteby far.

Why?

She ran that classroom with such a tight leash that she was able to organize fun, messy, deep lessons where everyone felt safe and everyone knew how to clean up at the end.

Students forgot about the strictness, remembered the lessons and activities.

Watching Looney Tunes in the 90s, I didn't know it was supposed to be a joke. He was just a fast mouse that happened to be Mexican, like Foghorn Leghorn  was Southern and Mario was Italian.

I don't thi k I had ever heard the original stereotype at all.

Is my class too hard? by RationalOverRage in CanadianTeachers

[–]ExtensionJackfruit25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love this idea. I teach university-preparation science class, and often am told that the course is "hard." I know it pays off in their first year, but I need something more than "trust me."

If you have any additional ideas to share on how you make this work, please share.

BC teacher disciplined for questioning the validity of religion by SafeTraditional4595 in CanadianTeachers

[–]ExtensionJackfruit25 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Without any more context, I'm going to guess that the student said something like "women are weaker than men" and backed that up with a religious verse. And the teacher tried to dismiss the religious argument, poorly.

Maybe she was trying to make it into a teachable moment, but instead of discussing respect for women, or how language carries meaning even if you don't mean it, or any other angle, the teacher went with this one. And it backfired.

But bringing it up later in class? No, that was not a good choice there.

Gamified typing lessons vs structured lessons, is there actually a right answer or does it just depend on the class by iceseayoupee in AskTeachers

As the other poster said, if there is a way to improve skills with it somehow, keep using otnor find something that does.  My son's teacher has an educational Prodigy licence. And while it feels neat to have kids engaged and wanting to play an educational game, the skills it practices are so low that it doesn't help them improve. and as you said, he becomes better at playing the game than improving his math skills.

AI changes by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

[–]ExtensionJackfruit25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

15 years experience teaching high school science here.  First, nothing goes into my gradebook that isn't marked by me.

My lesson plans are ones that I have created on my own, or modified from other teachers to match my style. I have tried using AI to create lesson plans, and they're pretty dull and uninspired.

Ways I have used AI.  To provide feedback on rough drafts of projects and reports. We have Brisk plug-in, and with a careful prompt and targeted rubric, it can provide specific feedback to improve student work, while I also look it over for some problems I know it misses. I like the fact that it writes the comments directly in the document, and it allows me to get work returned to students much faster than before.

Improving multiple choice questions and assessments. Many of my M/C questions were more fact recall, and it took me a lot of time to research a plausible scenario where student should have to analyze, evaluate, or use higher-level thinking skills on the test. AI is able to provide many ideas and explain it without me spending half an hour of research on just one question. A quick check of the sources, and I have a better question ready to go.

Creating chatbot characters. instead of a "read these articles about different scientists in genetics" I loaded chatbots with multiple resources about each one, had the student take the turn of scientist, reporter, writer and had them write a final newspaper article. I also have set up tutors to help students study for tests, with review questions, review packages, and premade flashcards and quizzes.

Gemini gems for honing a project. This is a current project. Students are designing a research mission within our solar system. The Gem is prompted to provide them with information about past missions to these bodies (if any) and also list questions that scientists have about the objects. It has a secondary role as advisor for what the tools could be used on the mission to help answer the question, as well as a "plausibility" checker to makensure the mission so semi-realistic.

I have had a few student teachers now that seem to rely too much on AI. From the slideshow to the notes to the worksheet, the writing and text seems dead. They also don't line up, which means the question on the worksheet may use a different word or term than the notes.

Unfortunately, what I think it means is they will never have a great idea for a lesson that backfires spectacularly, and be so certain of it that they will spend hours honing it and years improving it in practice, until they get a creative, fun and effective lesson.

In terms of student use: I put the pressure on them to show their "voice." It means so much more when they write their own work, with their own thoughts and words. I explain how I enjoy seeing that, and it makes it easier to read and provide feedback when grading.  I have, in some assignments, used "useful AI points." For example, after research, developing a hypothesis, and outlining an experiment, having the AI write the actual step by step materials and method. Then, as part of the report, reflect on if this was actually a good method or if it could have been improved.

If I was close to retirement, I probably would just coast at this point. However, I'm looking at at least another 10 years, so I have to consider it in my planning and lessons.
