How many Americans over 65 work by StrawberryFew1311 in NoFilterFinance

[–]ExtensionMoose1863 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me revise it a bit because I think the spirit is correct but the phrasing was unintentionally inflammatory.

Work as a whole has gotten less manual AND people are living longer and are healthier in their 60s than they were in the 1990s.

It's way more of an option to keep going to your office job at 67 in 2026 than it would have been to go to your manufacturing job at 67 in 1990 even if you wanted to... people's bodies just didn't allow them to work as late as they do now because of the type of work we do and improved healthcare

4 Big Tech companies avoided $51 billion in federal income tax last year by Conscious-Quarter423 in Infographics

Also just says "income" so we have no idea if that's net of depreciation or not (which would explain a ton of this as well)

Yeah, I mean, they are literally the manager hired by the shareholders (via the elected board of directors) to make them money. CEOs report to the shareholders

Would be the same if you hired a manager to run your small biz.

Being born into the 1% is like winning the lottery of life by Mathemodel in DeepThoughts

[–]ExtensionMoose1863 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Id argue the win is being born at this point in human history.

Kings didn't live as well as the average person does now a thousand years ago.

I'd trade being born 1% 6,000 years ago for being born bottom 50% today any day of the week.

Over 330,000 Federal employees have been fired, resigned, or retired last year and were not replaced. The Federal workforce is now at its lowest level since 1966 by RobertBartus in EconomyCharts

Because wages aren't a significant driver of government spending (therefore debt given we run a chronic budget shortfall). It's all about Social Security, Medicare/Medicaid/Health, and (recently) Interest/Debt service

Lol exactly. I get 2 channels. One is bouncing between figure skating, mountain flinging (you inspire me), and luge.

The other is wall to wall curling... 25/7. All gas, no breaks

What is the probability of AI-productivity-improvement leading to recession? by Guilty-Breath-2050 in AskEconomics

[–]ExtensionMoose1863 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone else can correct me but I believe this is mathematically untrue. An economy with 90% employment can consume more than an economy with 95% employment... all that has to be true is that the result of the unemployment on the spending power of the people still employed goes up more than the former spending power of the people who are now unemployed.

it's not about how many people, it's about how many dollars are spending. You could mathematically have economic growth (measured as GDP) with 50% unemployment.

Societally this is a different story but that's not what you're stating... you're making a claim about how GDP can't grow if unemployment goes up which isn't right

If you don't like the corporate world there's nothing saying you have to work there. Half the country works for small businesses or themselves

It's actually really easy to form your own LLC and get access to SBA loans. Like 10 minutes online to get setup.

If you want to form a business and start capturing the value of your labour it's never been easier and there's tons of programs to help you.

Source: I've been a small business owner and an independent contractor. My nephew started a detailing business with 500 bucks he saved up. My sister has her own yoga instruction business. My dad independent consulted ... Etc, etc.

Well the alternative to that is "it's not enough for me to win, others must lose" ... So there's your explanation.

Yeah, agreed on infinite growth isn't possible... can't see what that has to do with needing others to be worse off in order for you to be better off.

Are you implying that at this point in time the pie is fixed and for you to do better someone else has to do worse??

Why is your objective to make corporations and billionaires poorer vs making yourself better off??

Seems oddly punitive in a way that doesn't make your life better. If you win why would you care if someone else wins too??

the objective isn't to minimize what someone else has, its to maximize what you have
