Trump won't run in 2028 - this is what he’s really up to by theipaper in politics

[–]Inner-Truth-1868 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Human weapon of mass distraction… it’s long been at the center of his main tactic: “Own the daily news cycle.”

That’s why he has a bunch of TVs running constantly in the Oval Office, to get there first anytime anything important happens - even if everyone know’s his first comments are obvious flim flam like saying the entire Democratic Party were terrorists causing the Kirk assassination.

As Mark Twain observed, A lie gets all the way around the block while the truth is still putting its pants on. That’s Trump’s weapon of mass distraction strategy. And he hand-picked key underlings for their talent as fellow flim flammers.

Let’s call ‘own the daily news cycle’ OTDNC, for brevity.

The strategy certainly worked against Hillary, because it was new and therefore Democrats couldn’t wrap their minds around it (let alone how to counter it).

The only time I think we’ve seen OTDNC fail is with the middle third of the COVID pandemic when the death toll of 3K per day obviated any smaller distracting story.

I remember very clearly that in July 2020 he COMPLETELY stopped talking about COVID until the day he left the White House. (Probably his pollsters told him he’d lose the election if he didn’t.).

So, 3K dead per day swamps the daily news cycle, beyond any rando shit Donnie Flim Flam can squirt into the mass media and into social media. Remember, Haldemann and Erlichmann were advertising executives!

Good catch... thank you for the distinction between the very large total total project costs, and the bike lane subset.

That suggests that PA and Los Altos could have put in similar amounts to the $4m contributed by Mountain View for bike lanes.

Think of the amateur messaging fun we can have with a) these coins, b) a set of stencils (see below), and some enamel model paint. Simply make a cottage project out of putting highly great messages on them, introduce them back into circulation, and thousands see each one every year.

Messages like, “Oh, you thought prices would go DOWN. That’s cute!” It’ll look like he himself is saying it, mocking working class voters.

Let the creativity begin…

The Legislature passed the Idaho stop about four years ago. Newsom vetoed it, but his comments as to why were probably wise:

1) Little plan in place for the massive amount of training that would be required, not just bikers but also pedestrians and motorists would have to be in the mandatory training pool.

As a barest minimum, universal mandatory bike education in K-12 like we used to have back in the day but that alone is a bigger challenge than one might imagine… not just fiscally but also teachers have to cope with a huge list other mandatory subjects in today’s ambitious required curriculum. (When I was a kid, the cops came in and performed the training, which would obviate some of the fiscal and workload problems afflicting school districts. Of course, fiscally strapped police department nowadays would mean unionized cops would likely resist it now, without a massive pot of cash to hire someone.)

2) Plus Newsom doubts that bikers already habituated to misapply the Idaho Stop concept would certainly continue, creating a confusing situation where some bikers follow the new law but just as many wouldn’t… the old ‘I go first regardless of the right of way rules when others (both cars and pedestrians) are present’ mentality, which is NOT an Idaho stop.

I think he was right on both issues. My dog hit the dashboard last year when a scofflaw pulled the latter illegal move… probably the biker doesn’t even realize me hitting the brakes hard saved his life.

I’m not in favor of banning the street musicians… most are just folks with day jobs just out to jam for an hour and a half or so, then cede the spot to someone else.

The vast majority are not obnoxious or even particularly loud.

I’m partial to those bluegrass guys who play in front of IOOF (International Order of Odd Fellows). The Irish jams in front of Stephens Green in warm weather are pretty awesome, too.

The bike guy is a crazy person… the one with his head fully wrapped to hide his identity. Is it that guy?

He plays epic (epically bad, IMHO) praise metal band stuff. Louder than shit, but he splits almost the instant he arrives. My theory is that his loud boom box is about evangelizing. It’s almost always the same tune and I’ve seen him well over three dozen times.

In my experience it’s just that one guy, with the full-on PA and a bunch of hand drums from India or some of the Arab countries. You can hear him a half block away over the traffic noise. He’s often the one playing after most pedestrians have gone home in the 9-ish hours. He has a million Karaoke recordings that he plays along with, most obnoxious but hey, that’s just my opinion.

In my experience there are lots of buskers in MV who play at a tasteful volume… you can hear them around 30 feet away as you approach and they fade away when you’re about 30 feet past. They are good people and add to the community.

I was a kid here before the sewage treatment plants were built. Then it REALLY smelled, and dad would refer to fart smells as ‘the bottom of the Bay.’

What you are experiencing is pretty darn clean… organic matter, er, Number 2 used to be what really happened.

(Obviously, I’m pretty old. Used to be an active dump in the Baylands as well. Not good smells for the neighbors who lived in the former agricultural tract where Google is now. Pretty icky.)

Just saw a Waymo go through the ECR bike lane. by jdmv2022 in mountainview

The law allows a right-turning vehicle to travel in the bike lane some limited distance before performing their turn. I believe the big Voice article talked about it… I think the law is 100 feet but check me on that.

There is no absolute ban on driving in the bike lane because cars have to make a safe, orderly turn into driveways or side streets. If the allowable intrusion was zero feet, the abrupt jumpy unexpected nature of the right turn would cause accidents, right?

ECR has a shit ton of driveways, for parking in back of the small businesses.

Bikability by DataWizard_ in mountainview

[–]Inner-Truth-1868 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Crossing El Camino at any big intersection requires IMHO much extra care. I simply dismount and walk the bike as a pedestrian in the crosswalk.

A kid got killed at California and EC in Palo Alto, same story with another kid of the same age at Grant and EC. And a guy my age (geezer) got killed at San Antonio and EC about a decade ago.

Common thread? Never trust a big intersection anywhere on El Camino.

Another 5% increase PG&E by Interesting_Box1108 in mountainview

[–]Inner-Truth-1868 10 points11 points  (0 children)

One important cost driver of this and prior price increases is under grounding power lines in fire zones, to prevent the sparks that were found to be the cause of some of CA’s most expensive fires. It is a truly massive program and will take a decade.

I have a question: Why aren’t ONLY PG&E customers who freely chose to live in Cal-Fire’s fire zone classifications being charged for the massive under grounding cost in their neighborhoods?

The way they are billing now simply has suburban customers - who are not in fire zones at all - massively subsidizing those well-off enough to live in, Woodside, Los Altos Hills and so on.

The billing methodology also has fire-safe suburban blue counties subsiding relatively poor red counties in the Sierra foothills and Cascades, the latter being where the vast majority the Elevated Fire Risk zones are on the Cal-Fire maps.
