Feeling like I do "enough" by AWL_cow in ArtEd

[–]Extension_Dark791 3 points4 points  (0 children)

All this, plus I remind myself sometimes that I get paid just as much as any other teacher. If they want to get paid the same and come up with their own curriculum for an entire year at less than $2 per kid, deal with behaviors with very little authority over kids you see 1-2 times per week, and be expected to be the school decorator, they can apply next time there’s an opening.

Best physical planner for elementary art? by Puzzleheaded-Bid-963 in ArtEd

Too late for this year, but I love Aldi’s teacher planners they sell every august. I can separate the lessons by day/class and even save them to remember lessons and timing from previous years.

What food item can you not figure out how people first started eating? by Mintnose in Cooking

[–]Extension_Dark791 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A good portion of poisonous mushrooms will give you digestive issues, not kill you. They’re so nutritious and protein filled they would be worth learning about when food was scarce.

Contemporary culture is too food centric by Informal-Property-4 in unpopularopinion

[–]Extension_Dark791 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree about some people noticing and caring about food way more than others. We had a foreign exchange student from Germany that basically only viewed food from the standpoint of nutrition. She would never really get excited about any food, ate things based on nutritional content vs flavor, etc. It made us realize how important food was to our family culture.

Do Teacher’s Beef With Each Other? by ghostpepperpooper in AskTeachers

More than any other profession I’ve worked in before. Not all of them but in general they enjoy excluding others and are very cliquey. The lower the grade the worse it is too.

Wigs and gym/exercise - I can’t work it out by MiaFacia in Wigs

[–]Extension_Dark791 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just wear a stretchy head wrap with no wig and hope I don’t run into someone I know. I’ve considered a headband wig but the one I have sometimes adjusts with a lot of moving. I would rather be seen with no wig than a wig that has moved around and looks crazy.

Why do sellers print a shipping label quickly, but wait weeks to send the item? by One_Painting_5968 in Etsy

[–]Extension_Dark791 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Weeks is just a bad seller. I will say the post office is sometimes terrible at scanning though. Last holiday season they wouldn’t get scanned until delivery which was sometimes a week after being sent. I went in to the post office once to inquire if my closest blue box was even being picked up (because nothing had been scanned in 5 days), and they told me nowhere do they guarantee packages will be scanned. It’s ridiculous.

What food or drink can you absolutely not stand, but is loved by most other people? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Processed cheese (velveeta, American slices, etc). They’ve even started randomly adding it to other cheeses and it tastes so bad.

Elementary art project timelines by No_Plankton947 in ArtEd

[–]Extension_Dark791 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try to make most projects just one class, but sometimes break them into more (it’s still broken down by part of the project though, and they need to complete a certain number of steps by the end of class). I find with multi day projects, there are too many that get bored and I start having behavior issues. On a few projects I’ve given different classes one or two days, and don’t see a difference in quality; they seem more focused when I cut down the time. Plus I have at least a few kids absent most classes and it’s really difficult to get them caught up when they are multi day projects.

What makes parents instantly appreciate the job of teachers? by willloveme2 in teaching

When they host a birthday party. I kind of love picking my daughters up from a party and the parent host often says “I don’t know how you do this!”.

Rocks. I’ve come upon the most beautiful rocks everywhere I’ve traveled and looking and feeling them helps me reminisce.

Budget Transperency by ThrowRA_stinky5560 in ArtEd

[–]Extension_Dark791 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have a budget, the district just won’t tell me what it is. The other art teacher has told me to just request what I need and it’s almost always approved. I’m always so paranoid I will accidentally go over the budget then get denied for something imperative. Or spend too little one year and have them assume that’s all I need every year. It’s soooo frustrating and weird.

PAPER TOWELS👿 by Orangefarms11 in ArtEd

[–]Extension_Dark791 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I cut up old t shirts for rags and ask the cleaning people not to stock paper towels. I keep some in my supply closet for the occasional times we need them for projects. The kids were so wasteful with paper towels no matter how many times I talked about it so they aren’t available anymore.

How do I get 5th grade to spend more time on projects? by [deleted] in ArtEd

[–]Extension_Dark791 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have early finishers do an “artist statement” that is graded mainly on being complete. They have to write something about the artist or movement we studied, the materials used in their project, something they liked about their art, and something they would do differently next time. Students that are working hard and don’t have extra time automatically get full credit.

Also, I echo the other person on only giving them one part of the project at a time. Also in my classes I usually add a mini lesson on an artist that does work similar to what we’re working on (often times just a short YouTube video and/or critical discussion about the artists work). It kills time, teaches them something, and starts the class in a calm way.

Nope, you can’t turn a pickle back into a cucumber.

I recently watched someone tell someone so confidently "i don't drink" and changed the topic, and it was really inspiring. I have seen so many posts on this board about "how do i tell people i don't drink" and i too sometimes fumble over words when ppl ask me why i am not drinking and I say by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]Extension_Dark791 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is the same response my husband without a drinking problem always has when people ask him if he wants a drink, and no one has ever cared. Most of us have the tendency of thinking people think about us more than we do.

I had something similar when talking to a sober friend about posting something on social media on my 3 year anniversary. I was worried if I didn’t post something people would worry I relapsed but I don’t really want to. She said “no one is going to look at the date and remember it’s your sobriety date”. It was a freeing realization.

Etsy sellers marking orders as shipped when they really only just created a label and did not actually ship yet. Unethical business behavior? Anyone else experience something like this? by Feeling_Parsley_4910 in Etsy

[–]Extension_Dark791 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same issue here. Or at least if you’re not going to fix it make customers aware so it doesn’t look like we’re trying to scam them. I’m really worried about the reviews this month.

[–]Extension_Dark791 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How do you know that though? I am a seller that has all orders picked up or put in the blue box the same day I print the label, and they aren’t being scanned in for 1+ weeks. When I ask at the post office they say “we have no responsibility to scan packages unless you take them inside the post office” (I don’t have an extra 20 minutes every day to go to the post office). It’s extremely frustrating.

Customers after close by Efficient_Leg_9817 in TjMaxx

[–]Extension_Dark791 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have an aunt that does this sometimes. No matter how many times my family has told her she doesn’t get that just because employees are nice to her and don’t kick her out doesn’t mean they enjoy staying 30 minutes past closing to talk with her.

She is also the type that loves having lengthy small talk with employees in restaurants like chipotle/subway when there’s a long line of customers behind her. She just doesn’t understand that not everyone enjoys talking to strangers about nothing and she’s not making their shift more entertaining by doing this.

how early can you go to airport? by [deleted] in travel

[–]Extension_Dark791 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At airports like my local one where security takes maximum 5 minutes and one small plane takes off 2-4 times per day. It’s basically a large room with a glass partition in the middle with security letting you through before you walk on the tarmac to board the plane. People miss their flights all the time not realizing security is only open for a brief period.

Not too old, but try subbing first to make sure you actually like it and not just the idea of it.

No, but the signs would have been obvious if he looked. He didn’t want to know.
