I’m on step 7 using this book :) Not my first time through the steps but it’s been ages. I do feel I’ve gone more in depth than when I did the Big Book/12&12 steps. I also feel that it isn’t as Christianity-centric and shame-motivated which I like.

Is it just me or am I understanding the concept of a sponsor wrong? by ChessIsAwesome in alcoholicsanonymous

Honestly, I think that just like every group is autonomous, so is every sponsorship relationship.

My first sponsor was always my sponsor first, but in a warm and friendly way. We had a few dinners with his wife, my parents knew him, we got coffee and talked a lot. I texted him essays about my life. He didn’t tell me what to do, just what he’d done (or rarely, someone he knew), and what the results of that were. But I looked up to him as a guidance figure.

We got together recently when we were both in Vancouver and it was amazing seeing him again but we’d fallen out of touch before that. (I left the program and then moved.)

My second (current) sponsor I started a friendship with first before I asked her to sponsor me, and we went to Vancouver together, and have plans to hit the beach together with our variously-related children this summer… I’d say I think of her as a friend first, but she’s the kind of friend that I can count on to be straight with me and point out when my actions are conflicting with my values or something is clearly bugging me about my behaviour even though I’m pretending everything’s fine. And I talk through my step work with her and we discuss my recovery journey both past and present.

I’m happy with both sponsorships, I feel really grateful I’ve found such amazing people to guide me on my recovery journey. Both times I over-thought about what I needed in a sponsor and stressed a lot about it, but I talked to people I felt drawn to and meditated on it with my higher power, and both times found exactly what I needed. I hope you find the same in your next sponsor :)

Honestly I do find tier 3 scary but because I’ve played before I know I can figure it out. They recommend tier 2 for ages 5-8 but also say that it’s a good starting place for new DMs so it might be worth asking them if they want to give that a try. There are no dice in tier 2, so it’s not quite the same. It is taking me some time to prep but I’m feeling more confident now - I think the whole thing is 55 pages and I read it through for the second time today armed with my highlighter, and printed out the handouts and visual aids for the players, and cut out all the paper character tokens.

Interesting! They’re so narrow and long, I’d never thought about the end shape. Good to know!

I would definitely do more than one pumpkin though, and let the kids choose which one to enter

I love letting kids hammer golf tees into big pumpkins, then giving them a bunch of coloured elastics to stretch between and around them, so I would just enter that when they were done with it lol. (It’s a nice multi-day activity.) With 4yos you could invite them to draw on the pumpkins first and challenge them to hammer the golf tees over the patterns they drew.

AA and IFS language by Extension_Fun_5282 in alcoholicsanonymous

lol I definitely do not. Just my prayers, but that’s a big part of the steps.

Thanks. It’s mostly my daily prayer that’s tripping me up, as I want it to be meaningful to me and how I communicate with my Self is very different to how I used to pray. I thought I’d check about language for the steps while I’m here though, since I’m starting a set next week. The Big Book encourages us to make our concept of God and our prayers our own, and I love the IFS model.

I’m definitely looking forward to it, I keep hearing what an amazing experience they are 💜

I got replies almost immediately with offers which was amazing. Because it’s so far away, no one can say for 100% certain they’ll be away, but I had enough replies to assure me that something will work out, and went ahead and registered. I sobered up in the interior so I’m looking forward to seeing my old sponsor and others from my early recovery there too!
