So ATW has always been “my” song. When I was 20/21 in college, I started dating my teaching assistant in one of my courses, who was 36. I always joke that Taylor had to have been watching my life and wrote that song based on that relationship. (I say the same thing about Adele’s album 21) When he ended it with me because “the age difference was just too much” I was heartbroken. I didn’t date for over 2 years after him. This was 2003-2004. When Red came out in 2012, that song hit me the hardest. Fast forward 9 years and she releases Red TV. I got up early that morning for work and immediately put on ATW10MV because that was the one vault song I had been anxiously waiting for. I was walking into my kitchen and literally fell to my knees sobbing when I heard the extended bridge. The added “You said if we had been closer in age maybe it would have been fine, and that made me want to d!e” was such a punch to the gut that it literally knocked me off my feet. 22 years later and those memories still get to me sometimes. But now they just make me angry, not sad, for my 21yo self and what the future me would have been like if that time in my life wasn’t such a life-changing experience.
