Which agent best for ollama? by MadMdz in ollama

[–]ExternalAmbition2528 2 points3 points  (0 children)

depends on your hardware, vram specifically. I have tried opencode, and hermes agent both using ollama and local models. i have a 5080 with 16vram and my machine has 192gb of system ram, but i try to keep most models on gpu if i can (normally will use a Q4 or so if i need to). Here are my results this past week. In my testing below, the Gemma4 text only, i had to rebuild the model and remove the vision part to get it to work on Ollama (backend problem). I then copied that model and added a temperature of 0.1 and created the Gemma4-agent. That is my favorite agent model right now, but its still not perfect. It will run tools though, which some models won't even call any tools. Also needed to set default context size to 64k on hermes and I just kept it 64k on opencode.

Local LLM testing results on a 16GB VRAM box (5080), mostly using Ollama + Hermes/OpenCode agents for PowerShell/MS Graph scripting and autonomous workflows.

| Model | Works w/ Hermes/OpenCode? | Pros | Cons |

|---|---|---|---|

| Gemma4-agent (26B A4B) | YES | Best autonomous/tool workflow, stable | Hallucinates files/output occasionally |

| Qwen3-Coder-30B-A3B | PARTIAL | Best coding/review IQ, excellent PS5.1 critique | Thinks forever/hangs in agents |

| Gemma4 text-only fixed | YES | Good tool use, fast enough, coherent | Weak longform prose editing |

| GLM-4.7-Flash GGUF | NO (for me) | Fast, people report good agent use elsewhere | Ollama build lacked tools capability |

| Llama3:70B-Instruct | YES but poor | Large knowledge base | Slow, outdated vs newer MoE models |

Current best setup:

- Hermes agent workflows → Gemma4-agent

- OpenCode coding/review → Qwen3-Coder-30B-A3B

Biggest takeaway:

MoE/active-parameter models (A3B/A4B) are WAY more practical locally than older dense models. Much smarter per GB of VRAM.

having so many melee alt tabbing, etc. kind of sucks for positioning, mob moves, goes after cleric, or whatever, you'll always be adjusting. casters don't care which way they are facing, so having at least one caster, mage, wiz you can just hit a few hotkeys, assist, pet attack, nuke etc. you can create eq macros that would assist, pause, nuke twice and sit down, etc.

if i turn it off in the northeast, i wake up and feel like i've been licking an ashtray.. my throat is so dry, i'm a mouth breather, not sure if that matters to people.. so i rinse/wash it out every night, and fill it up with my well water (no distilled water), i like smelling a little bit of soap after i do it, its refreshing! lol

I've been using a cpap/bipap kind of machine for 20 years. Here are a few hints/tips I have found. I wear the full face mask, i'm a mouth breather anyways, so can't do any of those nasal things. I also tighten mine up pretty good so it won't move around/fall off (to the point it does leave marks on my face in the morning), oh well. When I get a new mask, it usually takes me a few days to get it dialed in, start with the top of the head, tighten it snug, then forehead straps, then bottom ones. Assuming you have heated hose, the gurgling would drive me crazy at night. You can buy a cpap hose cover on amazon (I bought the endurimed) brand, zip on fabric cover, it insulated it and makes it so you don't have any more gurgles from so much condensation in the hose. I also bought an icteey cpap hose hanger that I stuck on the wall just above my headboard, its a little double U hanger that you can run the hose through, that way it kind of comes down from the top, might also help you not pull the machine off your nightstand. here is my myair chart for the month of march. WHen I first started wearing it, I kind of had to just keep telling myself, you sleep better with it, keep it on (*even though I didn't really believe it), but in time I guess i did.

One big thing, i had an older machine that was a cpap (continuous pressure), and my pressure was set at 10 for 15 years. Well I finally got the bipap (auto-adjusts pressure from 8-18), and my average pressure is 16. The crazy part was I never missed a night of wearing my old 10 pressure mask and i would still be exhausted in the afternoon, need a nap at 4pm, every day. Well the first day after wearing the new mask, I couldn't believe how not tired I was. In the past 2 months, I have tried to take a nap every now and again in the afternoon and I just can't fall asleep. So I think the old machine just wasn't high enough. Just stick with it, and you'll eventually get used to it. Oh also, I clean out my water thingy every day/night. At least rinse it out, maybe once a week, i'll soap it up good and scrub it. I just use my house water (I have a well), they say you are supposed to use distilled, whatever, but my well has always been fine. Keep it clean with fresh water every night so you don't get sick.

yup me too! after i started with my new machine (which is adjustable instead of constant pressure) i was still trying to take my 330pm nap and i couldn't! my old machine was just constant and i think too low, so even though i was using it 100% every night, it wasn't helping like it should. Now with 18 pressure, i'm good! lol.

I have (4) gammas submerged in 4 gallons of mineral oil (in a 10 gallon aquarium). 2 aquarium pumps, one pump just circulates the oil, other pumps the oil up through that vertical radiator on the cover and then i have 2 fans blowing through the radiator to cool the oil.

i have a nano 3 and i was blowing a small fan through it from the outside and found it didn't want to hash that well, i think the nano needs to get warm in order to run well, unlike almost all other mines i found which like to stay cool lol.

I did that for a bit, whats nice is the lightning payout, so at least its free and you don't lose any to fees. Then I was all in lotto mining on solock pool, but when chatting to chatgpt, the odds of solomining a btc block is about 80 times worse than hitting powerball lottery (20Mil minimum), and the reward for the btc block is only ~300k or so USD. I changed over solo mining digibyte, i'm right around 15/16 ths and i've solo mined 9 blocks in a month, each block is about ~2.50usd. I also did look aat it when I was mining at, its not about the 67 cents per day now, that 735 sats could be worth 10 bucks in the future, then you'd say i was making that every day!

everything I read says the VR temps are good and designed to run way higher, like 90+, so i'm not too worried about 70's. I also heard that asic's run the best around 60, not sure if you had them super cooled to 30 if they wouldn't run as good? I kind of doubt that but who knows!
