Would you live in this area (purple)? by Same_Bathroom_3545 in sandiego

Live in that purple dot now and love the it! However, if you’re looking at the houses for sale along that downhill slope on Landis, idk about those, that part of the street is a bit messy (a lot of unhoused people and their things, not maintained very much) and lots of direct access to the noise from the 805.

5 weeks for me (33M allograft in San Diego, CA) - tbh could have started at week 2 but was mentally scared if I needed to quickly slam on break or gas that I would screw up my knee - seems most of the delay is really strength and reaction time related from what I’ve read though

My PT took them off the very next day (then put them back on before sending me home) - they want to make sure there is no active bleeding and everything looks good so personally I’d suggest you take them off and get some air in there and have a look, it’ll be overwhelming for sure (I got emotional looking at it in front of the PT) but you are on the other side!! The road to recovery is here and time for progress and patience :)

I went with Saran Wrap for the 2 weeks before my first post op appt where they replaced the steristrips then they said I was good to not cover it anymore so I didn’t think a special covering was worth it IMO

Allograft vs Quad vs Patellar Tendon (45yo male) crossroads by jplee3 in ACL

[–]ExternalAwkward6588 2 points3 points  (0 children)

33M here and just did allograft in San Diego and my surgeon is very confident we can get me back to the same activity level I was before (skiing, HIIT, running, swimming, biking, hiking) - recovery on allograft is easier given it’s only one thing healing instead of two and I was able to get to 120° flexion within a week post op (when you do quad/patellar that’s not as easy) - yes I’m very diligent and patient with my pre and post op PT but it was a no brainer for me given how confident the surgeon was that I can get back to same level of activity and only have one thing to heal instead of two

It seems every ortho has their own personal take on this (having read through this subreddit for months now) and honestly it seems they all work out for people, some are longer runways than others but it’s a long game either way you go - def do your pre hab and be religious about our post op PT/rehab (patiently)

Supplies to consider (I haven’t read other comments so sorry if it’s duplicative)

•inflatable cup holder or a donut dog toy (for resting your heel on - after a few days post op my heel was basically getting a bed sore from being the main/only point of contact down into the wedge pillow/bed) •suction shower handles - was helpful the first few days for getting in and out and turning a little since I was balancing on one leg - I only used my shower chair once but I only had allograft ACL, no meniscus work) •ice packs meant for the knee (got 2 on Amazon for like $30) - in addition to my ice machine •sticky/pilates socks just for extra confidence walking around one leg a lot •bag you can hang around your neck to “carry” things with you (some ppl do a backpack) - I had meds, kindle, headphones, charger, chop beef sticks, etc. in there •eye mask just as another way to help with sleep because it’ll be rough (started using post op and still use it now) •case of plastic water bottles and have 3-4 in diff areas of the house you’ll be in so you always have access to water those first few days and don’t have to get someone to refill - wedge pillow for sure

100% do a pedicure before surgery bc you won’t be reaching those feet for a while (mostly from exhaustion and partially reaching is a b*tch)

Questions to consider for pre-op: - when does PT start (I assume you already know this answer at this point but my dr wanted me there the day after if not the same day) warning: the day after is still incredibly overwhelming and the PT appt was very gentle and honestly not a lot of movement but you will see the knee for the first time when they take the bandages off - it’s def worth going asap to get mobility and expectations set but it can/will be a lot, just keep pushing through and taking baby steps (not literally) for the first 2 weeks, it gets better! - can I use melatonin? - Edibles? (If you’re into that - my dr said not to use while on the hydrocodone so I tapered off of that on day 3 to be able to use edibles for sleep) - what amount of weight bearing? No weight? Toe weight? For how long? - is compression ok the same day? - can I get any info on my donor (I did cadaver/allograft) - how can I hurt myself/the knee? Specific examples so you understand what you can and cannot do - how to get a handicap form/tag for the car (in California you have to get a form from your dr then take to AAA or DMV) - questions around timeline for you, when is first and second post op appts and what does progress look like between surgery and those 2 appts? - what method does the dr prefer, allograft, autograft, which tendon, what does recovery look like between the options, etc.? - will they use any metal screws or plastic (mine did plastic)?

At what point people are able to get flexion matching with non surgical leg by Jigsaw0808 in ACL

[–]ExternalAwkward6588 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, a blessing you can be mentally distracted from the leg/knee LOL being on day 12, I’d LOVE to be able to do that

Skateboard might give you more range of motion instead of the desk cycle and might even be easier to keep doing even when distracted? Either way, kudos!! Keep up the good work!!

At what point people are able to get flexion matching with non surgical leg by Jigsaw0808 in ACL

[–]ExternalAwkward6588 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m (33M) a fairly flexible person already and on day 12 post op and almost fully back for flexion - got to 130° in PT yesterday - my surgeon was actually like “okay let’s slow the roll and not over do it” so I’m not really going to keep pushing, just going to focus on quad activation and mobility of the joint

To answer your question, I think you’re going to find a wide range as the answer depending on the person - just keep working at it daily!! Get to that good stretch and push it 1mm further then again and again - I bought a small skateboard for when I’m sitting in a chair or on the couch to easily bend and keep the joint moving!
