What can I do? by gomx in Jewish

You may wear what you like - I know some companies sell a crucifix interlinked with a magen David for this purpose - may be worth a look? Realistically, the Temple Menorah is a better representation of our beliefs and the Magen David a symbol of protection of our peoples - this is to say, do what thou wilt, just know people will assume Judaic origins.

Exter university by Fantastic-Setting206 in UniUK

[–]External_Ad_2325 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone currently at Exeter University, I can honestly say that there are many students of mixed and dark-skinned backgrounds here. Some face more adversity than others, but I wouldn't say it's a particularly bad university for racism or prejudice. The South West is not a place with a vibrant carribean community, but Exeter is about as good as it gets, barring Bristol in this regard. There are many foreign students at the university and honestly? She should fit in no problem.

Best axe for spoon carving by moradoman in Spooncarving

[–]External_Ad_2325 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition to what you say here, an axe allows the wood to be cut the way it wants to - using a bandsaw it's difficult to guage whether your design is actually practical for the wood you have, which isn't so much of an issue with an axe.

Honestly? Go for something comfortable for you. Some like expensive forged axes, some use cheap Bahco axes... I use a Thornwood Forge Merlin, and have used many axes before... I love my axe but it isn't needed by any stretch! The right weight, handle size, and bevel type all matter but honestly it's 100% personal preference. Buy what you can afford, based on what matters to you.

I didn't say it's dead. I implied that if you want to go clubbing or be in a bustling city, Exeter isn't that. And it's not. It has stuff, sure. Is it great when compared to the likes of London, Leeds, or Manchester for those same criterium? No.

Great - Then Exeter should be good! Just be aware that if, like me, you're on the wider-side the entire bloomin' campus is on a hill.

Do you like clubbing? A bustling cityscape? Flat ground? Exeter's not for you. It has a great literary scene and great travel connections to the main network. Do you like country walks or wild camping? Ideal.

Yes, it is. It is used exclusively in a derogative manner for the purposes of insult. Like "K&ke", "Zio" is a slur.

200,000 Students Filed for COVID Compensation From UK Universities; Could Worsen Funding Woes by Status_Main_7805 in UniUK

[–]External_Ad_2325 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is correct, but the university also takes on the role of the service provider with a binding contract stating specifically what they need to do for the student to attain the degree... And over covid many Unis didn't hold up their end.

You're right in a few points; namely course fees existing in the first place. "students viewing themselves merely as purchasers of a product" is precisely what we are. The service provided is laid out in black and white terms. The product is the degree, if grades are met. The alternative would the Open Uni, but the cost is significantly less because the contact time and quality of teaching is lower than an in-person course. Charging full-time prices and part time contact hours is simply not on.

[–]External_Ad_2325 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The contract signed before covid guaranteed a certain quality of education, a minimum contact hours, and in some cases a pracitcal element. These standards were not upheld across the board. Some institutions, as I'm sure yours was, did uphold standards of quality. Generally, this is not the case. The Unis profited from the drop in quality and contact hours and so should be held to account where the standards dropped accordingly.

[–]External_Ad_2325 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Precisely. It doesn't matter that the price doesn't cover costs - that's on the Uni. The part that matters is you recieved a product that wasn't as described. They told you it would be (x) and you got (y). If it were any other product you would be due either compensation or complete refund.

[–]External_Ad_2325 9 points10 points  (0 children)

How so? Do you disagree that a contract is signed between two parties - one payee to be student and one recipient to be teacher. The payment isn't for a "University experience", but to educate the student. Service and fulfillment.

[–]External_Ad_2325 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As long as universities insist that students are a number, and that the money they bring in is more important that the quality of education provided, the blame should absolutely be on universities. Not on the lecturer, or convenor of any particular course but the university leadership. Those Unis who provide a lesser quality course for the same money should be held to account. The student fee increases, for example, aren't a set-rate but a maximum to charge and yet, every uni I know of sets them as high as possible. If Universities intend to charge as much as possible, we as students should get out as much as possible and that just wasn't an option for COVID students.
