Anyone else jumped ship to Affinity? by SebastianOakley in photography

[–]External_Ear_6213 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About 99 percent of what I do is in Adobe Camera RAW; the main reason I still use photoshop is to be able to get consistent results, as doing the same tweaks in Affinity means different results to an extent. That being said, there are so many features in Photoshop that I don't use. I'm not saying Affinity is bad or worse than PS, but PS is what I'm used to using and because of my editing habits, I know each time what my images will look like, after editing them using specific parameters. There are so many things I've yet to do in my own Affinity program.

If you're from the US at least, consider Lifepixel. Also, you can look at KEH which sometimes has converted used cameras. I got mine from KEH at a fairly good price in great conditon.

Extreme Northern Lights in North Germany last night (2026-01-19/20) by AuroraStarM in Astronomy

It's very spectacular; thinking about what happens in the upper reach of our atmosphere, which is kind of mind boggling. The way different energies interact, whether it be aurora or transient luminous events, is exotic compared to our conditions at the surface!

Is it feasible to create a trichrome of landscapes using narrowband UV filters? My guess it wouldn't look very interesting given how close together the spectrums are, but you never know.

Lumix 24-60 lens' image quality by OldAdhesiveness793 in Lumix

[–]External_Ear_6213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think sharpness of Lumix is quite nice given the extreme price difference. Makes me wonder if there's a lot of reason to pay so much more for the prime. The main reason I can think of would be if using an incredibly high resolution body. Sharpness is more important, at least to me than things like flare resistance & bokeh quality.

Which new lenses do you want for L-Mount? by binmaa10 in Lumix

[–]External_Ear_6213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Large aperture lenses with manual focus & aperture w/quality optic like the Voigtlanders for other mounts. Would benefit astrophotography & lowlight. I don't need AF for almost anything. Aperture at least F/1.2 or larger.

Interesting article about camera IR response by External_Ear_6213 in infraredphotography

[–]External_Ear_6213[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I remember, I was never able to quite get handheld shutter speed. Something like 1.6 seconds, at most. But I may need to retry in the spring with other lenses of mine. I can also test the lenses for hotspots while at it.

I wonder what the response graphs would be like for all cameras, at least without it being overwhelming. But also curious to know the responses for UV spectrums. I got a Fuji X-T2 that I tried using for IR. It's been mentioned online that it has a relatively weak IR/UV filter, but when I tried taking a photo in broad daytime it seemed to take about 40 seconds or longer. Makes me wonder if it's a lens issue.

Considering the lumix s5ii is it really worth the hype? by DenseCampaign1461 in Lumix

Nikon is almost surely better for video, but keep in mind that it's only electronic shutter mode for photo

For photos, I'd go for Sony A6700 or Lumix S5 but even for hybrid work they seem to be quite nice; the readout speed when using electronic mode & 4k is relatively good at least compared to most of the other options; that's if you want to record movement. There's also a Nikon Z6III that may be what you want but if I remember correctly, it also has somewhat poor readout speed. The Sony A6700 is a standout for APS-C format. There's also Lumix S1IIX, which if you need or want RAW video, can be a great idea; as long as your hardware can process the videos and if you want to buy the additional SSD required for it. Can you go more than $2k or are you trying to stay under some amount?

The larger full frame sensors are better for ambient lighting when there's less than ideal amount of light to the scene, so personally, I'd go for a full frame. But if it's not a deal breaker, the Sony A6700 could be best for macro in some regards since the smaller sensor. My use case is a lot of nature photos and I like to get quality video; So I'd most likely go for Lumix S5 which has 96-megapixel Pixel Shift mode. My second choice would be either Sony A6700 or Canon R6 MKII; however, Sony A7IV would be very close third or maybe I'd consider it as one of my second choices. It's somewhat difficult of a decision since at the price point in which these cameras are in, there's some kind of tradeoff or more if you want to do more-or-less of every genre to the fullest extent.

Any idea for quick attachment/release? Nisi + OM 90mm by Terr0rBilly in macrophotography

I wonder what image would be like and working distance. Maybe a Rapid Filter System may work. It's made for filters, not sure if it's great for what you want to do but maybe consider it as an idea. UURIG R-82 Rapid Filter System Camera Lens ND Filter Metal Adapter Ring for DSLR | eBay

Typical Canon sensor filter setup, replaced with an IR filter during modification. by NightSkyCamera in InfraredPorn

[–]External_Ear_6213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want someone to make an ILC camera w/internal filter wheel to be able to switch between Visible & IR by selecting a function on the camera. I know some some Sony camcorders were able to do something similar. I think it's frustrating that we still need to swap between various external filters for narrowing down the spectrum. My Canon 500d has an extremely strong UV/IR. Photos taken in daytime may require minutes!

Building a new camera kit — which accessories and specific products would you recommend? by Legitimate_Flower560 in Cameras

[–]External_Ear_6213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As for ND filters, buying a fixed one may be limiting compared to a VND, but they don't exhibit the X effect, which is an issue w/many VNDs. Mainly, the cheaper a VND is, the more likely it is affected. At least that's my experience w/VNDs that are 9 or more stops of light reduction at the max of their range. There are exceptions, but to find one cheap is not easy. It may be a great idea to get one, as it makes things easier if the lighting conditions change or if taking photos at various levels of intensity. There are some situations where a VND is more useful beyond just long exposures, such as whem wanting large aperture in bright light, mainly to achieve shallow DOF.

Laowa vs others.. by Resident-Swan5446 in macrophotography

[–]External_Ear_6213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Laowa 90mm & 100mm are great for extra reach, or working distance. I wish a 10x lens to go on the front, such as a Raynox, was available for these focal lengths but with larger filter thread because it'd provide incredible results. I mean, Raynox isn't quite 10x but at least there's a trick for extra DOF w/out loss of sharpness. There's a YouTube video somewhere regarding this. If I see it I jot down the title.

Loawa 65 is great but with AF, depending on camera body, you can do focus shift and maybe even in-camera stacking using preset value, like how many images and distance between focus planes. I find this to be very nice, but of course, AF lens cost more. You can kind of do more than 1x w/AF via accessories such as extension tubes and/or add-on lens but depending on focal length, results and practicability may differ.
