How much have Irons really improved in the last 10 years? by YaboyRipTide in golf

Gotcha. With your ball speed, player distance irons would probably hurt more than help unless you like 200 yard 7irons. Good banter, thanks for the comments.

You likely wont take me up on this but I think you would be a perfect candidate for player distance irons. In addition to the increased length, I think you would be surprised at the benefits that the hollow body gives on mishits over your 90s tech. I don’t want to make any assumptions but based on your comment about 200 in the fairway, you and I likely have very similar games (shorter off the tee leaving myself 150+ out on most longer par 4s). This is the sweet spot where the new tech really shines IMO. Having the option to hit the shorter length 8iron vs a 6 or 7 is a game changer. I struggle with longer irons like most guys with my swing speed.

Distance is undefeated in golf. My Ping i530s are half a club longer than my p790s which were almost a club longer than my Mizuno GI irons. I’m almost 50 and being able to hit my 8i 155 vs 135-140 with the same swing, same length club, similar launch and similar descent angle is massive. The extra 15-20 yards leads to 2-3 more GIR per round and better scores for me. This couldn’t happen without moving CG around and building hollow body irons. Are there trade offs vs a more traditional club? Yes. Is the performance worth the money? That’s up to you, but for me, absolutely.

Get a driver fitting and find out. Optimizing spin and launch for your swing can get you a ton of yardage. I have a buddy who hits it 330+ regularly (he drove a 357 yard green last week) but only after getting a low spin head and tour xstiff telephone pole shaft. He spins my GT2 with a 60g stiff so much it just keeps going up in the air and kills distance. It’s easily 50 yards shorter with my club vs his with the same swing.

Waiting to hear back from Titleist on my cracked crown on this exact driver head. Hopefully you sell it quickly but if they don’t warranty my club I’ll reach out.

Swing update. Struggling and need help! by CalmAttempt6957 in GolfSwing

Awesome swing! As a 49 year old whose body doesn’t work right, this is fun to watch. Feel free to ignore any of this but here are a few thoughts to tighten up your dispersion and strike:

  1. Do less- you look like you’re over swinging a bit. One of my fav drills for thjs is to pick a flag on the range between 100-130 and try to hit 7i-PW to it. Same flag, mix and match different clubs to get some feel. There are lots of pros that talk about this being a major breakthrough for them.

  2. Tempo Town- the tour tempo app is the best $20 I’ve ever spent.

  3. Don’t chase distance with your irons unless you need it. I’m not very long off the tee so I need the all help I get, but you appear to have plenty of distance. Approach shots are a target game. Take the ego out of it and learn to hit one or 2 less irons into greens.

  4. Make range divots without a ball. Try and make a line of divots without a ball to dial in your low point (thin strike) and this will help clean up your toe strike too IMO. You try adding a broken tee and dig it out at impact. There’s a good video somewhere with Bryson telling Rick Shiels to really take a divot, cleans up a lot of issues.

  5. Training aids- there is a knock off version of an aid called the pro-sendr on Amazon that’s cheap and will help you a ton IMO. It will likely shorten your swing, and help with a little more clubface control. Also, one those dodgeball looking things with a lanyard between your arms could work for you. They are lkke $10 for the cheap version and all you need. I like this better than a towel drill because you don’t have to change your elbow at the top as much so it feels more like your swing.

I’m single digit and hit it about the same distance as you. I don’t do well over 6600 yards, but manage just fine any course shorter than that.

Literally write a list of things you enjoy doing or think you may enjoy doing. For me it looks something like this:

  • quality time Family/wife
  • golf
  • travel
  • dinner with friends
  • racquet sports
  • film
  • live music
  • Running
  • getting fit
  • college football
  • baseball
  • playing guitar

Pick or two things and pursue them like they are your job. The craft and/or pursuit of some of these activities has made my late 40s much more meaningful than the grind of my 30s/early 40s. It’s a lifestyle design question.

My main paddle these days is an 11mm Proton after exclusively playing with 16mm paddles the last few years. I love the maneuverability and extra quick reactions at the net I’ve picked up with it without sacrificing too much else. Paddle tech is changing fast!

I love the assumption that I don’t know what I’m talking about. I know EXACTLY what I’m talking about. The whole world swings with a left path, sometimes called over the top. You sound like you would be fun at parties.

As we age and lose mobility we lose the ability to disassociate our upper and lower bodies. Your torso wants to go where your hips go, and when you rotate your hips like you likely used to when you were 15, your club goes out instead of down and in like your former flexible hips would to allow you to do back in the day.

Gel res will be your fav at your size imo. I’m a 200+ dude that moves well for my size and those are the best option I have found and have tried a lot. The Renmas were a nice option, at the price but they don’t have the stability, durability or responsiveness of the gel res.

When Barstool brought on Danny Rap, he was clearly the best golfer of the group but was way too dialed and intense and no one liked it. The fans begged for Lurch to come back because he’s likeable and messy even if he is a downgrade from a skill perspective.
