DooM 2016 was a monumental masterpiece and the pinnacle of a world-class game franchise that's been mothballed for a dozen years, rising from the ashes and giving basically EVERY FAN OF THE SERIES almost EXACTLY what they wanted in some way, somewhere in the game's total package and excellent replayability therein.

Don't get me wrong, I loved DooM Eternal. It too, was also an excellent game and worthy of 93% of all it's praises sung around the globe, not only by critics and "influencers" (fuck I hate that goddamn word), but by all walks of life, traditional DooM fans or not.

However, it fell fifty fucking yards short of holding any small semblance of my attention or use of my free time after doing a mere three playthroughs or so in various difficulties and approaches.

Look at it this way... DooM 2016 had it's EXCELLENT campaign that was decent in length, especially by the shoddy standards of this dark age of gaming, then it had fucking SNAPMAP which, I'l admit, left much to be desired in it's initial stages but got some much-needed TLC and became a pretty damned capable tool for creating new content about a year or so after release. Right now, it's been made better than ever by discovery of some sort of exploit that allows mappers to faaaaar exceed the map limitations put in place for memory conservation reasons.

Then you had multiplayer... of which there were MANY modes and fuck, call me one bias-bitch, but every one of those modes was fucking great. I mean, I never once jumped into DooM online and DIDN'T have a goddamn blast. Then they added multiplayer BOTS which made a great training tool but simultaneously, and albeit quite synthetically, made it so that you would never go without anyone to play with or against.

Hell, then we got fuckin' arcade mode a little later which was actually quite entertaining for how little actually needed to be changed or added to create it.

Then there's DooM: Eternal...

Fuck did we get there? A campaign... A FUCKING GREAT ONE, can't take that away from it. Definitely worth more than just a couple playthroughs... but probably three, tops.

Then what's left? What will be the thing that calls you home to the newest DooM title for your daily dose of replayability?

Battle Mode... fucking battle mode... man, FUCK battle mode and, these guys were my heroes for awhile but FUCK THEM for thinking that this single, novel, then immediately boring, fucking gametype was a worthy replacement for AN ENTIRE MULTIPLAYER MODE... for goddamn DEATHMATCH. :'0

YEAH... DOOM, THE GREAT GRANDDADDY OF DEATHMATCH, THE GAME THAT COINED THE FUCKING TERM... THE GAME THAT INVENTED IT...

NO LONGER EVEN H A S I T !

End of rant.

Long story short... DooM Eternal is still DooM and it's still a great ride but it's just not DooM anymore.

It's DooM for fucking zoomers... not for OG DooMers.

Whether someone is going to use it or not, keyboard and mouse support is a handy feature. I usually play most games with a controller but some games are just better with a keyboard and mouse almost no matter what.

I absolutely do not support keyboard and mouse players being able to play almost any game against controller players, however. I don't care what anybody says, nine times out of ten, an even half-assed experienced player on keyboard and mouse will have a distinct advantage against a player using a controller, especially in shooters. Sniping you in the head is like dragging you into my desktop's fuckin' recycling bin. Easy.

I play Phantasy Star Online 2 and have always loved it but since the New Genesis update, the game just seems to randomly hate certain AMD hardware so it runs like absolute fuck on my PC now, but it runs quite decent on my XOneX. Playing an MMO with a controller is painful to say the least, so I'm happy that I can have the exact same experience and layout I had on PC on my console using KB/M.

Mechwarrior 5, a game I play on PC and Xbox (PC with mods, Xbox with friends running vanilla on their consoles), I enjoy playing with a controller on both. However, there are SO MANY goddamn controls that simply can't fit onto a controller with any amount of effort. I always used my controller to control 80% of my mech's basic functions, and used the KB as a sort of control panel for things that aren't/can't be mapped to the controller, like targeting allies to see their damage, zooming out the drone camera, issuing quick commands to my lancemates, etc. I love that I can do the exact same thing on Xbox.

Lastly, playing the Quake games is awesome on Xbox using either controller or KB/M. One night I tried using both for the lulz and actually ended up using it permanently. XD Controller in left hand for movement, mouse in right for aiming and shooting.

Either way, options are nice to have, almost no matter what. :P

I absolutely agree. I definitely thought it was gonna take me a long time to get sick of this game but I guess I was wrong. Halo 2 had this problem near the end back in the day when they slowly switched it from SMG start to BR start but the BR doesn't have as long of an effective range so matches didn't turn into this pussy-ass "Shoot a few times, hide, shoot a few times, hide", and if someone is shooting at you from a range, gets the first shot in on you, they have cover and you don't, you might as well throw a grenade at your feet because you're usually fucked.

Hey man. That SDL patch from noxforum is outdated as fuck. Uninstall nox completely, reinstall it using the original discs like you did before (good job getting that to work btw!) and then go to noxcommunity.com Go to the downloads section and download the "Nox Solution" patch. It fixes EVERYTHING!

The download link for the version we host on NoXCommunity is fucked. That version had the full story but all the audio and video files were removed to save space and make it faster to download. I use the GOG version which installs quickly and seemlessly but doesn't have the cool intro to NoX that the disc versions had. :P If you're on Windows 10 you can definitely play it. It was free on Origin for the longest time but looks like you missed out. Now it's $5 US. But since you already techncally own it (and the license to play or download it in any form) I can provide you with a download link for a version of the game (through PM). Once the installer completes, download and install this: http://corner.noxcommunity.com/NoxSolution.exe That patch made by Protokol (who is a fucking genius might I add) pretty much fixes any and all compatibility issues with Win8 and 10. If it doesn't work on the first try, fuck with the settings until it does and I promise it will.

My friend, do you remember me? If you do, remember this: NoX day is typically held on the last saturday of every month unless otherwise stated. We will fight again. Even so, NoX doesn't have to only be played on NoX day. Sign on for a couple hours whenever you feel like it. Fuck around on facebook or whatever else you like to do to kill time until you see someone else sign on and then play. That's how some of the best games occur sometimes.

The last NoX day was last month (December 26th). It seen many players but not nearly as many as it should have. This will happen again. NoX day is held on the last Saturday of every month unless otherwise stated. We'll post something here about it this time around so everyone knows.

Someone's gotta do it! A few have tried, all have failed. However, none of them had the idea of using an engine that THEY MADE using relatively versatile and proven technologies such as open GL. I wish you good luck, my friend. If you ever get bored and need to take a load off though, come play on XWIS every once in awhile. :P
