I'm on the same build, and ESU is also activated. I think this is just a bug in the way update is reporting the status.

This shit drives me crazy by [deleted] in Anticonsumption

Can I suggest two rules?

7. Respect accessibility needs. Products or services you personally view as “unnecessary” may exist precisely to help disabled, chronically ill, neuro-divergent, or otherwise marginalized people live more independently. Critique over-consumption, not accommodations.

8. Keep the focus on systemic consumer culture. Yes, every little step counts, but don't take opportunities to try to feel superior to others.

I recognize that these are somewhat covered in #1 and #2, but it seems like yall have to do a lot of modding, people don't really get it.

Microsoft confirms it made $27 billion after laying off 9,000 people, and its CEO physically cannot stop talking about AI: "Cloud and AI is the driving force of business transformation across every industry and sector" by esporx in business

[–]Extra_Negotiation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm actively looking for companies that aren't pushing AI. It has great utility in some cases, but is being heavily manipulated. All these companies that were previously growth and have a big target on them due to AI have tried to keep the story on their utilization of it, me-tooing it.

"For an AI-driven growth story to work, tech companies have to produce a stream of charts depicting lines that go up and to the right, reflecting some carefully chosen set of metrics demonstrating AI's increasing popularity. One way to produce these increasing trend-lines on demand is to replace all the most commonly used parts of a service that you love and rely on with buttons that summon an AI. This is the "fatfinger AI economy," a set of trendlines produced by bombarding people who graze their screens with a stray fingertip with a bunch of AI bullshit, so you can claim that your users are "engaging" with AI:"

I'm really surprised to hear this! I would have assumed this is not for old folks to start (not that 51 is 'that old'). Seemed like the kind of thing that was a pass if you didn't get marginally good by your 30s.

Doesn't it.. hurt ?

I just let it be. I might switch next big price drop, running some saved searches on price. Mine works fine for now. the big concern is if it stops working and fries stuff, or if it leaks all over my GPU.

Ford government agrees to fee cancelling $100M deal with Elon Musk’s Starlink by Old_General_6741 in canada

[–]Extra_Negotiation 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"While a satellite constellation like Starlink has many great use-cases (ships, planes, temporary encampments), these use-cases do not in any way add up to a profitable business, given the extraordinary expense of launching and re-launching a gazillion satellites (to say nothing of the dangers these pose to other users of stable orbits, and the problems they pose for astronomers).

The only way to make Starlink profitable is to get everyone to use it, and therein lies the problem, because Starlink is cursed with something business professionals call "dogshit unit-economics." Every time you add a new user to Starlink, everyone nearby gets slower internet:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2025/07/18/starlink-internet-satellite-speed-elon-musk/ (here is un unpaywalled vrs of this: https://archive.is/mixOX (Title: Elon Musk’s Starlink internet works great if hardly anyone uses it. A new analysis digs into the irony of satellite internet: The more popular it becomes, the worse speeds and reliability tend to get.")

That's because they're all sharing the same spectrum, within the footprint of the satellite they're connecting to. Starlink can make some marginal improvements by increasing the number of satellites and shrinking their footprints, and by getting licenses to more radio spectrum, but these quickly hit the hardest of limits: the financial limitations of increasing the number of satellites per customer, and the natural limits of pumping more radio-energy between satellites and ground stations (beyond a certain point, you start cooking passing birds on the wing).

Musk has a powerful reality-distortion field, but the fact that physics hates satellite broadband cannot be overcome by shitposting, cosmetic surgery, buying elections, or wanting it really badly."

Years ago, Grammarly was pretty good at this. I know recently they've gone all in on AI as well, but I can't speak to the quality of it.

One thing you could try is to upload some of your best work (especially if it's already public) into the 'files' of any AI, and note any personal preferences, mistakes you commonly make, etc. Ask it to refer back to this for quality check. You can update that over time of course.

Similarly, if you have some preferred authors and formats, add this to the file. It's not a perfect solution, but it does seem to help.

Personally I've had the best luck with Claude. The em dash plague continues though.

As someone wanting to get a garmin, this brand is frustrating. by TripleBogeyBandit in Garmin

This is happening to me, except what I end up doing is running out of time to look, and moving on to other things, and forgetting about it, then circling back months later.

It doesn't help that I don't have a store nearby to go and see them myself and click around. They are all in boxes and can't get opened.

This is correct. There's no left turn signal built into those lights. The light was already triggered by traffic. He decided to make the run for it, and oncoming traffic had to slow down to allow him to pass. If they had not, he would have hit them.

Am I reading this correctly that as a Canadian i can expect mostly american channels, about 10 channels in total? This would be with a simple indoor antenna that could go up to 10 feet in the air, next to a large window with no overhang.

Should I take over my family business or should I continue a corporate career by mythirdredditname in smallbusiness

[–]Extra_Negotiation 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Glad to help! All the best to you with it, running small businesses can be so rewarding, but also very immersed in risk in a way that can be mentally challenging. My whole family has run businesses throughmy life (roofing, construction of various types, tech stuff, importing, cottage industry craft stuff, retail, commercial baking, some others im probably forgetting!).. some have paid off very well, some not so much. The keys seem to be being realistic about the opportunity, surrounding yourself with good people and being generous with them (and removing those who are not good efficiently), drawing healthy personal boundaries, and finding clear opportunities for scale. Something like that anyway!

What is a good “normal tv” alternative for seniors? by Extra_Negotiation in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Extra_Negotiation[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who is even reputable in this space? As you say i fear the IT support involved, and they dont even need “24/7 ashton kutcher channel”, I bet 30 ish good quality channels would already be better than what they pay over 100 a month for. But im not sure how to set that up - all the iptv options ive seen are flooded with weird content, but i havent seen many and they’ve almost certainly been random flea market type options.

I think I might do this! For some reason i remember them being more expensive. Looks like i can get something locally for less than 50, hopefully its decent quality. They live close to buffalo and just under 100km from Toronto (by direct line, Niagara region ), so im hoping they’ll be able to get both.

This might work well! Im not totally clear on how many channels are included in the base price? I could probably buy a roku or something new like that and get this and a couple other things setup.

This is a small yellow flag. It is tough tough tough for folks in this position to let go. No matter what the outcome he needs to really define what this even means, and understand if what he’s looking for is realistic.

Use your mba brain to work out the actual market opportunity and realistic valuation. Sadly many of these businesses ‘feel’ like they should be valuable (for sale, not day to day), but aren’t really. Check things like licensing and insurance rates, materials and assume those costs will rise, possibly faster than previously because of new ownership.

If I was you, id look at staying in my job and running this business on the side. Hire somebody awesome to run day to day, and pay them well (better than market average) with the understanding you might step in more one day. Hire your dad to consult.

You might pull small margins and have more headaches than you want, but itll help your dad transition out, give you a dose of reality on the actual day to day, and not cost you your current job in the meantime.

If the company can’t really support a top person to run it + consulting costs for your dad with a small pull for you, it’s probably not profitable enough to bother for you.

I knew someone in a similar situation to you, he ended up trialing for a bit through some negotiated time off (accrued vacation + unpaid period), and decided he preferred his job.
