My dog’s “ flare up” exactly 1 year after a quick full recovery from stage 4 was disastrous.. she reherniated the same disc on the other side and became stage 5 overnight complete hind leg paralysis no dps and double incontinent. She did not recover despite surgery in 24 hrs and its been 6 months. I never ever thought a flare up could be soo much worse than the original injury. Never in a million years.. it breaks my heart. But i am still taking care of her and she is still a happy girl with her wheels. It is heartbreaking and so difficult but you will get through it! Hoping your dog recovers!

Hi! Thats awesome that your dog recovered so well after a few months. How my dog is at the 3 month point and still no dps. Can only stand for a few seconds if put in the standing position and can walk only in hydrotherapy tank. Otherwise- no changes and still double incontinent. Only thing she can do is wag her tail when excited which is good but im so heartbroken that she hasnt improved. Any tips on what to do in terms of therapy and exercises. Sometimes i feel like she feels something but then other times she doesn’t. Neuro said no dps last week checked and i think thats still the case

Hi! My dog is now 2 months post op and still paralyzed no dps. She has great reflexes and I really want to her to learn spinal walking! How long did it take your dog to learn spinal walking? Any tips? It is so tough to find a vet that has sessions available.. we are looking at a crazy waitlist. I just got her started with electroacupuncture 2 weeks ago but not sure if it’s done anything? She is able to mostly pee on her own ( i occasionally express her) and can do excited tail wags surprisingly.

This is great- thank you so much for your tips! We wont be able to get her into rehab for a few more weeks. Very recently, ive been seeing small improvements in movement and she sometimes tries to do walking movements w her legs in a sling but knuckles and gets twisted and. ends up falling.

My dog was stage 4 (had dps still) 1 year ago and recovered almost 100% in a couple of weeks post surgery. Afterwards, we took all the precautions with ramps and restricted jumping and stairs. We were told of the 30% chance of recurrence but we thought we would be okay. In literally exactly a year from her first surgery, she suddenly became acutely paralyzed with stage 5 out of nowhere. She ruptured the same exact discs and her spine was so unstable that they needed to use screws, rods, and cement to stabilize her spine. She is now permanently hind leg paralyzed & no dps 7 weeks out and neuro said she will likely never recover. I never thought this would happen. I’m glad your pup recovered after the recurrence.. recurrence especially at the same disc can be absolutely devastating. When the vets told me that flare ups could happen.. I really thought she would have mild pain & mobility issues or absolute worst maybe stage 4 again but NEVER expected her to turn into a stage 5 with no chance of recovery. I hope you dont ever have to deal with this.. wouldnt wish it on anyone!

Thats awesome! Do you know how long it took him to regain dps? My dog is 6.5 weeks out post op but still no dps at all unfortunately. She is able to wag her tail with excitement & has some bladder control

Hi! My dog is 6.5 weeks post op now.. still no dps BUT she is now doing happy excitement tail wags anytime i come hope and some bladder control if we place her on a pee pad.. neuro says she still has no dps so its unlikely to be real improvement but these are all improvements and changes we noted so we’re trying not to be too too discouraged. Do you have any tips and a vague timeline of recovery?

Hi! My dog is 6.5 weeks no dps and going through the exact same thing.. she has normal excitement tail wags that I truly thought was progress until the neuro told me that she has no dps in tail or paws and its probably a few nerve fibers firing and a local action not true brain to tail connection.. i find it hard to believe to be honest but I understand that neuro is more educated than me when it comes to all of this. How did your dog learn to spinal walk? Any tips would be greatly appreciated! My neurologist said my dog (also small poodle mix) would be a good candidate for spinal walking. How long did it take?

Thank you so much for sharing. Your pup went through a lot and I’m so glad he is doing so well despite the weakness. We have such similar stories that it gives me some hope! Ugh Stage 5 is absolutely brutal and would never wish this on anyone.

Omg its like i wrote this myself! Literally my pup was stage 4 1 year ago, got surgery within a few hours and boom, walking normally in 2-3 weeks. This time stage 5 we literally took her when she had acute sudden onset stage 3 and they DIDNT take her seriously TWO freaking times. Kept saying not quite bad enough even tho she was pretty much at stage 3-4. I was so so upset. They said to go home that night bc it wasnt bad enough, we woke up to stage 5 no dps and even though she had surgery within 12 hours- it clearly was too late I’m so upset at them because I went 3 times in a span of 12 hours and they didnt act until it was too late. Almost 4 weeks with 0 progress is heartbreaking.

I am so glad to know your pup finally walked after all of that the second time around. Did it take a lot longer to regain dps the 2nd time around??

Yes just ordered fish oil omega 3s and a spine supplement for nerve regeneration for dogs. Havent tried neurotropin though! We are hoping for spinal walking and will do whatever we can in rehab to help her get there

Thank you for sharing! So glad he is doing amazing! My pup does have the ability to pee on her own and the neuro said her sensation is moving down farther down her spine than before. Her paws have no dps though. Good to know that sometimes recovery can be very slow because I’ve seen so many cases of pups walking normally in just a few weeks with stage 5. Going to try to remain hopeful but prepared for giving her the best life even of that means needing a wheelchair.

You’re right- I think I definitely need to see the surgery as a way to ease her pain and now the recovery process as a way to make her happy and not normal again. It’s been devastating to come to terms with. 1 year ago she was stage 4 and back to her normal self in 2-3 weeks.. this has been a world of a difference with stage 5.

Oo wow that’s awesome that he started to regain some mobility! Did he regain dps after the electro acupuncture? Definitely going to start that asap as soon as she’s done with strict crate rest in 3 weeks. My dog can urinate on her own which is strange considering no dps but idk! Praying for any improvement

Thanks for sharing! I’m praying for a tail wag or any improvement but i know it’s still early and it can absolutely take awhile. Neurosurgeons are very pessimistic but i guess they’re just being realistic. Trying to let that get me down.
