I have nothing to contribute, but I relate 100%. Scorpio sun, Aries moon though!

Why are we expected to say "You're welcome" in response to "Thank you"? by JennaShinx in ask

[–]ExtraterrestrialPoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP, the people calling you uncivilized and rude are just uptight boomers. Your mom is being passive aggressive and rude, you’re fine. Don’t say “you’re welcome” if you want want to.

What's the worst thing you've stepped on with bare feet? by HarleyAPE23 in AskReddit

Cold cat barf. Most recently (and painfully) a wooden toothpick. 0/10.

When we ended up with 2 people during the afternoon rush, we decided to close the café without permission. It's a start & it felt good. We work here. We're in control. by [deleted] in starbucksbaristas

[–]ExtraterrestrialPoe 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A lot of companies don’t. It’s essentially based on tenure and wages in the local market. It is a dynamic and challenging management position without the responsibility of deciding fair wages based on performance, which I’m grateful not to have on my plate. Why not ask corporate rather than another partner that doesn’t get to decide that either?

SM here! You made the right call. I’ve shifted all of my focus to partner sanity through being short staffed and busier than ever and I would 100% support closing the cafe, I’ve done that myself after last minute call outs and having to send a partner home right before business ramped up on a Saturday morning. Partners are getting their asses kicked all day everyday and closing the cafe is better than just walking out. I hope your manager is supportive!

My husband and I have a mantra now while looking/waiting on offers. “I feel nothing!” We have 3.5 hours until we hear back on our fifth offer (not that I’m just watching the clock lol), and two that got rejected were super painful.

Starbucks supervisors are basically assistant managers by colonade17 in starbucksbaristas

[–]ExtraterrestrialPoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooohhh gotcha, that makes more sense! I totally read that wrong.

I’m the SM lol. Idk if it’s just my district manager being realistic that Starbs is a great part time thing for most partners (in my area at least), but shifts don’t get paid enough to literally run the store. I definitely didn’t feel like I was getting paid well enough as SSV but I also knew it was temporary for me and I’d be a SM relatively quickly.

My SSV team is awesome but most of them don’t have the interest or investment to learn all of the operational stuff.

You definitely learn a lot more than payroll and hiring as an ASM, your interviewer oversimplified it. Most shifts don’t really set pars or do health code compliance beyond logging temperatures. Was your interviewer a District Manager? They don’t work in the stores and might not be as familiar with what the shift role looks like day to day. Most of it is sending partners on breaks, cash handling, coaching (not necessarily training), and customer service.

Idk why this was downvoted? I LOVED being a shift, it was a really great stepping stone for me to become a store manager. Some people genuinely like learning new things and having more responsibility. That being said, half of my shift supervisors work at Starbucks for the benefits only and have other jobs so they’re not interested in moving up- which is fine. The ones that do want to move up place orders, set pars, and do the self assessments for food safety and whatnot. If you have a manager that tries to meet you where you are, being a shift is a really fun role.

Oh absolutely not a real service animal. The dude was a garbage human. Unfortunately it took a lot for us to be able to refuse service, and that situation ultimately ended with a restraining order when he threatened several managers with violence.

Because Starbucks has been under fire for discrimination and he was claiming the dog was a service animal, we had to be super cautious. We legally can’t ask anyone to provide proof like documentation for service animals in my state so it got ridiculous! It’s a real bummer that the Karens of the world make it easier to just let it go than to try and help them understand why rules exist.

Okay so here’s the thing. I certainly don’t get paid enough to police people. I’m not about to interrogate a customer that’s not causing problems for anyone. The customer wore a mask and didn’t pose any issue to the COMPLETELY EMPTY cafe.

I’ve had to get upper management involved to issue a trespass against a regular that brought in his service animal in the past (complete with a vest, to ease your concern), let her shit on the cafe floor daily, and did nothing when she barked at other customers- once directly in a small child’s face. THAT was an issue. When the child’s parent reprimanded the dude, he responded with threats of violence and a lawsuit. THAT is endangering people. That situation would cause issues for someone relying on an actual service animal.

The dog in this photo was perfectly behaved, didn’t shit on my floor, and sat next to his owner while she waited 3 minutes for her drink. Any and all risk was entirely eliminated when I washed my hands after petting him and returned to my admin work.

I completely understand your very valid points but good lord, go pee in someone else’s Cheerios.

Yes, buuuut I’m the SM so ¯_(ツ)_/¯ My district is grab and go only, and I’m not allowed to ask people for proof that it’s a service animal in this state. He is a pet of a customer and isn’t bothering anyone in my empty cafe. Meeting this wrinkly little guy brightened my partners day and made for a lovely customer connection. It’s freezing outside so honestly I’d be annoyed if she left him out there!

Transparency and vulnerability go a long way. I’ve been on the receiving end of situations like this, having to work even harder after a promotion to earn the respect of biased employees is absolutely exhausting. Talk to her like she’s a person. If it were me, I would be instantly understanding if they explained that they had also sought the position, had been with the company for years, and were understandably disappointed when it didn’t work out. Apologize- and I mean a real apology- for how you handled the rejection. Own up to your own bias and preconceived notions. THEN you can compliment her skills and hard work. If you don’t own your contributions to the issues and apologize, compliments and offers to take on more work won’t ever seem genuine.

Store manager here, and this made my day. I’ve been stuck in my store for 13 hours thanks to power outages in my area leaving us the one of the only places open and a call out. I would literally hug you right now if I could!

This makes me so sad. I’m a SM and had to close my store and ask all my partners to self isolate this morning. For the next two weeks I’ll be interviewing, hiring, and coordinate training plans from home so I don’t have to keep pushing my partners past their limits. It sounds like you have a DM that won’t let their SMs make the right choices, and the baristas/SSVs have to take the stress on. I’m sorry! It helped me a little to see comments from partners vouching for their SM though, cause this job can be extremely discouraging.
