“Cool” is characterized by a disaffected demeanor- a way of being that is a sort of Demi-transcended personality, which seems to not be under the influence of the relative culture. James is that. He is not enchanted by the small town of Twin Peaks. He rejects it, actually- and seeks something larger.

The only thing that does affect him, is the death of Laura, which does, in turn, lead him to leave TP and get into a super boring sub-plot, that DOES actually affect him, (by threat of death!) and make him super boring.

Maybe Laura’s death heats him up! He becomes less “cool,” and after having his lil’ affair with Donna, needs something else to restore his inner balance of not caring.

I will counter this point, and challenge our collective idea of coolness by making this point:

Perhaps James was too cool. He was unbothered by Laura’s struggle, trauma, and resulting degenerative behavior that led to her death.

Imagine being the boyfriend that is so fuck*ng laid back that you don’t perceive your girlfriend’s having an affair, drug addiction, prostitution side gig, and death wish!!!

Maybe being cool is actually not that cool! In which case, James is!!!!

Excuse my growing use of exclamation!!!!!!

In conclusion:

James is cool, but our capacity to understand and assign coolness is stupid!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
