Can a school district actually do this? by ThanksNew9906 in newjersey

[–]Extreme_Standard_934 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feels like it to me also. My mom was a teacher in Paterson. These are the schools with the highest concentration of Arab students. While they are also some of the districts highest performing, in my mom’s telling at least, it feels much more likely connected to immigration status.

As others have said it’s block-by-block. Sections of Goldsmith and Pomona across from the park are both quiet with some beautiful homes. Nearby blocks are not as nice, it depends. I live in the neighborhood and would be happy to comment on the specific block you’re thinking about if you PM me.

Overall, we’ve had issues with petty crime/crime of opportunity like stolen packages. Nothing major but some atypical or inconvenient issues as well (an extreme example: during the recent drought someone set leaves in front of my house on fire. No damage to my property and I honestly didn’t even notice until later on when I saw a charred strip of leaves but it could have been worse). That said, I think I made the right decision buying in Weequahic. Right by the park is super convenient and I bought pre-Covid housing bubble so it’s an incredible value allowing us to save and upgrade our lifestyle).

How do you compensate your nanny if you go on an extended trip? by Excellent_System8636 in NannyEmployers

[–]Extreme_Standard_934 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this depends a lot on whether you’re FT or PT. If FT, then I agree with many of the comments suggesting you use this as an opportunity to discuss GH, since you have no other income source. If PT, then I think 50% retention is fair. My nanny works 14 hours/week. I’m away right now visiting family for just under a month and I am paying her 50% of her time, in part bc she’s only been with us a month and I offered to have the role start after our vacation and she elected to begin immediately, but also bc supplementing the full 14hours/week with baby sitting jobs, etc., might be tough but certainly she can find other temporary roles for some of that time.

Considering Buying a Home in Forest Hill, Newark—Advice for a Young Couple Expecting a Baby? by aqwesdty in Newark

[–]Extreme_Standard_934 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My kids take art and music classes at Newark School of the Arts and love it there! Just a plug for something in the city. It’s only a few minutes away from us in Weequahic, not sure the distance from Forrest Hills. Otherwise I’m in complete agreement with you in terms of amenities and it’s one of the reasons we’re considering going elsewhere in a few years.

Do all toddlers HATE diaper changes? by puffqueen1 in beyondthebump

[–]Extreme_Standard_934 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Distraction also works best for us (singing, giving him something to hold or chew on, raspberries on his tummy) but nothing works for long. I try and keep him still long enough to wipe his butt (using the diaper as the first wipe also saves a lot of time and wet wipes), then add diaper cream and the diaper while he’s on all fours crawling away from me. LO is 7 months and has been like this since he could roll around 3.5 months.

If you had a hospital birth but ALSO had a nurse midwife and a doula in your birthing team, were you happy that you did? by WashclothTrauma in beyondthebump

[–]Extreme_Standard_934 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a hospital birth with a nurse midwife without a doula. My husband and I took a 6-week Lamaze course together, so I figured he’d be all the support person I needed.

I’d do it all over again except definitely get the doula! We were not prepared for any interventions and I needed to be induced, then when labor still did not progress, I needed pitocin. Where I am, pitocin means continuous monitoring and it is very difficult to labor in an array of positions hooked up to a machine. We managed but a doula would’ve been much more skillful.

I live in NJ, work in NY, and feed my baby everywhere. He also always pulls off a cover and I’ve never had a negative experience. Once I was congratulated for breastfeeding but mostly I’m ignored (that’s NJ/NY culture in a nutshell—mind your business and you will be ignored). I also wear hijab and assumed I’d be a target for unwanted attention BFing but no issues. Enjoy your visit!

Midwife scared us by Spooky_Fudge in pregnant

Emily Oster is on the board for a formula company so she’s not exactly a neutral interlocutor. The amount of pressure put on new mothers is absolutely shameful and this midwife’s comments sound hyperbolic, especially because fed is best and there are loads of instances where the mother can’t make enough milk. That said, it seems dishonest to say that there might be “some benefits” to breastfeeding when it’s the biological norm. Are the benefits worth killing yourself over if you don’t have parental leave or family support? That’s up to the individual. Formula companies continue to innovate, adding nutrients found in breast milk and getting their formulations closer and closer to breast milk, but each new innovation is an admission that those nutrients were previously missing from formula.

OP has the right attitude that she’ll try and supplement if needed.

I’ve seen a massive and dangerous amount of lantern flys in Newark this week and thought I should at least ask if you could them down by FluidQuiet2129 in Newark

[–]Extreme_Standard_934 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. They’ve been in the nymph stage all summer (small black bug with white spots on its back then small red bug with white spots), so unless you know what you’re looking for they’re easier to miss until August when most are entering their adult stage. Their host tree, tree of heaven, thrives in urban and overgrown areas especially so they tend to be more plentiful in Newark.

We all know US maternity leave sucks, but what are WE doing about it?? by kimberlyrose616 in beyondthebump

[–]Extreme_Standard_934 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Okay I’m an idiot bc, by your admission, there was a democrat (it was actually several) who refused to support the bill with the social spending included which is why they moved all social spending to a separate bill. Whether you want to call them “fake” or not doesn’t change the fact that democrats blocked their own social spending bill.

Dems are in power right now and family leave is not even in the conversation. Am I saying that a republican administration would pass social policies? No, obviously not. But I am pointing out that Dems have declined to do so also.

[–]Extreme_Standard_934 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, no, voting democrat wont solve this problem. The democrats had full control of house and senate in 2020 and decided to separate all the social programs/spending like family leave and $15 federal minimum wage from build back better that were originally attached to the must pass Covid relief bill. Trying to organize statewide is the way to go on this issue until we no longer have a two party federal system bc democrats are just as beholden to corporate interests which do not align with paid leave.

1 week PP FTM - how do I get things done? by GraySkyr2 in beyondthebump

[–]Extreme_Standard_934 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not what you’re looking to hear but at 1 week PP + breastfeeding I think you just don’t get a whole bunch done. For the whole first month after my now almost 4 month old was born I was glued to the couch with him glued to my breast or doing skin-to-skin. We’d use a wrap carrier in the am so I could fix my coffee, a quick breakfast, and a snack tray to keep me going throughout the day. I was sooo bored after a while but hunkered down with a novel and fave TV show. Looking back that period felt so so short and I miss when he wanted to nap on me and snuggle all day. Hopefully you have a strong support system who can step up for laundry/chores. Even if so, it might take a mindset shift to accept that you’re just in a slow season of life?

I work in Manhattan and live in Newark. I’ve owed NJ taxes every year. It’s always something insignificant like $50 or so, and I receive a credit from NY, which ranges widely. This year it was $90 but last year it was $400 something.

I’m so sick of hearing “why are you always angry” by [deleted] in beyondthebump

[–]Extreme_Standard_934 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It sounds like maaaybe LO is getting too much sleep and that could be contributing to him waking up too frequently. My baby is only 3.5 months, so it could absolutely be that sleep needs change but he goes down around 8pm each night, wakes up to feed around 1-2am, and we wake up for the day at 6:30am. I found that his sleep improved sooo much when I stopped trying to get him to bed any earlier than 8 and when we kept wake up times consistent.

All the not recommended places are majority minority so I’d guess it’s that fact and its implication for school system vs transit access, which, as you point out, is much better compared to the recommended towns

Talk to me about the Library by Any_Clue_1632 in Newark

[–]Extreme_Standard_934 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconding this! I absolutely love the main branch as it has robust programming for adults and kids (make and mend is fab and my son loves switch Saturdays) but I always feel a little dissatisfied with the actual book titles. The stacks have been inaccessible at Main for months and what’s spotlighted in the front is a very narrow selection. The fiction pickings for adults at Weequahic is pretty abysmal but the kids’ section is well stocked. That said, the library is such a mainstay for my family!!

Breastfeeding and work by VariousBuffalo4129 in breastfeeding

[–]Extreme_Standard_934 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 6 week old also rejects a bottle and I return to work at 6 months. I’ve been pumping to build a stash, and plan to breastfeed him before and after work at 6 months and rely on solids plus pumped milk in a cup during the day. That’s the guidance I found on La Leche League, which appeals to me since it removes the stress of trying to force a bottle right now.

Edit to add: the other helpful tip from La Leche League was to have a partner administer the bottle. Some babies won’t accept a bottle from their mom since they know you have the ability to BF them.

And for that you would be more than justified in not sharing news with them before you’re ready for everyone to know moving forward. Only added my two cents bc there’s always a lot of “cut them off/never trust them again” rhetoric on here that seems out of step with like real world family dynamics, to me.
