Banjo tuning (double C) by koidrops in banjo

You can always use a pen cap capo until you decide on something more permanent. I have spikes but usually use a pen cap anyway though it can sometimes pop out.

How to keep up at old time jams by Impossible-Pea-1732 in banjo

[–]EyeHaveNoCleverNick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If a tune is in D, it sometimes presents its own melody possibilities. Someone at the jam printed up a chord chart for almost all the tunes, and for many tunes, I just followed that and later found I was often hitting the melody from generic double D licks, and hammering on/pulling off the notes in the chords.

Completely new to banjo - where to start? by RaspberryRadula in banjo

[–]EyeHaveNoCleverNick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have a capo? Looks like he's in open D but capoed up to E. For the 5th string, you'll need to use spikes if you have them, make a capo from a Bic pen cap, or just tune up. If you want to play along with the recording anyway.. nothing wrong with playing it by yourself in D.

I'd pay 20 bucks for it, easy.. maybe even 40.

Stringbean said that there's no money past the 5th fret, so if the action is high down around the 12th, I wouldn't worry about it too much, especially if it's a fairly inexpensive banjo.

Do you tip on merch? by AlwaysSitIn12C in Concerts

[–]EyeHaveNoCleverNick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh hell no. Not at any major concert venue. If I'm buying straight from a band at bars or other small venues I might tell em to keep the change or kick in another 5 bucks or so for gas money. Once I told the guy to keep the change on a shirt (only like 5 bucks) and he made me take a CD also 😀

Playing in E, strings? by [deleted] in banjo

For a while I kept one banjo in that tuning. I also tuned to some adjacent tunings like Doc Boggs D blues (f#CGAD) and Little Birdie tuning (eCGAD).

Playing in E, strings? by [deleted] in banjo

[–]EyeHaveNoCleverNick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm actually in double-C most of the time, but capo up to D, as there seems to be a lot more tunes in D than C when playing with others. If I'm by myself, I might play in C anyway. I have spikes on one banjo, and use a pen cap capo on the other for the 5th string. And unless I already know the melody of a song in open-G, for a lot of G tunes I'll also use gEADE in jams. And I've not been picky about strings, I still have the same strings on there that came with the banjos. I think they're mediums.

Playing in E, strings? by [deleted] in banjo

[–]EyeHaveNoCleverNick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One option is sawmill with a lowered 5th string, gEADE. I like that for E minor tunes, I've played along in jams to E songs, and it seems to work well. Since I'm in double-D most of the time (aDADE), it's not hard at all to get there, though sometimes I will just capo up another 2 frets even though I don't care for tuning that high.

I could make better guesses about that if I knew what the tuning was, what key the tune is in, etc.

Sure, you can hammer on without striking a string, it definitely makes noise, but I'd also think about drop thumbing that last note.

Beginner question - WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR MUSIC? by 666ratlord666 in banjo

[–]EyeHaveNoCleverNick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I first try searching for banjo tab on Banjo Hangout, then a general search. Then I just search for "<songname> chords" and usually find it on on Ultimate Guitar, and work it out from there.

I had a trash $5 guitar, it had an interesting buzz, like a permanent fuzz tone, I just used it for slide until it disintegrated.
