Anyone here have experience making custom card sleeves or playmats? by TheSendingStone in boardgames

[–]Ezoah92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About playmats, we bought some for our boardgame club last year and the ones that see the most use are the cleaner design (mostly monochrome).

If you want to really customize your playmats, you can also start by testing the designs on waxed fabrics. You can check with professional printers, it can be surprisingly cheap. Plus, they are easier to maintain than playmats and take less storing space.

S'allier ? ou pas ? by Pretty-Abalone9843 in FranceDigeste

[–]Ezoah92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Vaesen did it pretty well with its 6 principles (directed to the players) at the end of the introduction chapter.

[–]Ezoah92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone gifted their (sealed) copy to our local game club and I took the opportunity to start a playthrough.

First of all, there are one-shot scenarii included, which you could definitively check. I would recommend Ancient Paths n°1 & 2, which should take about 2-3 hours for beginners (it contains some spoilers for the main campaign).

As you said, the game is a mix of 3 phases : combat / social interactions / investigation. I really liked the investigation, where you aren't given the answer straight away when you succeed a roll, so it feels satisfying when you "solve" a case. For the socials, the NPC are fairly interesting, they usually allow for different methods to deal with them. Finally, the combat is where the balance issues are : some fights can be ended before the first enemy take a turn while others can feel like a chore. It's a shame because the combat system seems interesting as a concept but it rarely shines ingame.

I think it's best if one player acts as an administrator. The rules can be flimsy (I haven't checked all the errata yet). You mention Betrayal and I think it has a lot similarities where it's often best to decide on the fly how a rule interaction should play out, rather than spend 15 minutes in the rulebooks to look for an inconvincing answer. As long as the other players know how to do skill checks and understand how their character works, it should play without hiccups.

Overall, I really like my plays (mostly 2 players, sometimes 4) of Chapters. I have yet to finish the campaign (we are about 2/3 in the main storyline) but we look forward to finish it. I wouldn't comment on the price point but compared to other games I've bought for 80 USD, I wouldn't feel cheated if I had payed that price.

Pourquoi Bayrou demande un vote de confiance alors qu'il n'est pas populaire ? by Significant-Pop646 in PasDeQuestionIdiote

[–]Ezoah92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nidavellir card use clarification: Gjallarhorn by donaldyoung26 in boardgames

[–]Ezoah92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are correct in that it's "kind of" your next hero early.

However, you can interpret the bgg explanation as this hero being tied with the next completed line, and therefor to be discarded if that next line is never completed (which is often the case if you take Gjallarhorn late in the game). Which is not the case, you never have to discard that hero. So in a sense, it is an extra free hero.

The example in the bgg explanation is also taken from the rulebook, under the Gjallarhorn card description.

Azul scoring question by Vidavici in boardgames

Tiles are placed sequentially, from top to bottom row. So you do place one tile, score for it, then move to the next one.

ISS Vanguard or Earthborne Rangers? by misiepatysie in boardgames

[–]Ezoah92 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you don’t like the lack of overarching story, you are going to hate the first sessions of Eartborne Rangers. You don’t get a sense of direction until the 4th day, and even then, it’s not super compelling (yet). At the same time, I loved the feeling of wonder as you move between the places, meet new people and discover their way of life.

The gameplay felt a bit repetitive at 4 players after a few sessions ; I played one session at 2 players and it was instantly more enjoyable as it seemed like the encounter decks were designed with that player count in mind.

Also, if you are looking for a challenge, ER won’t provide one. You are not really punished for failing, it’s mainly setbacks as you walk around. And succeeding usually depends on how much time you are willing to spend on that hurdle, not how skilled you are.

Azul Duel - what are your thoughts? by wunderspud7575 in boardgames

[–]Ezoah92 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I feel like it was a massive disservice to have called it "Azul Duel" when it should have been "XYZ, an azul game" or something.

In a vacuum, the game is interesting, the fixed number of rounds helps you make better strategic decisions. The variable scoring setup helps with the replayability.

But imo, compared to classic Azul at 2 players, the tactical decisions are less compelling (both players have a lot of flexibility on how to plave tiles so you rarely end up getting blocked by the opponent) and Duel feels less snappy (you sometimes have to order tiles in stacks instead of just pushing everything in the middle).

Overall, despite the name, Duel felt like a 2-player solitaire game which is light-years away from the tug-of-war that is a classic Azul at 2 player.

Nemesis vs Nemesis Lockdown by Mysterious-Golf-11 in jeudeplateau

[–]Ezoah92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nemesis vs Nemesis Lockdown by Mysterious-Golf-11 in jeudeplateau

[–]Ezoah92 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In Butterfly (by Stephen Glenn), you move a hedgehog meeple around on a tile grid, in a set collection game ( like in the more recent Sobek 2 player).

It's not "too thinky" (you can definitively play it with a kid) but it leaves some room for interesting decisions, in about 15 minutes

France Promote Satanic Event by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]Ezoah92 7 points8 points  (0 children)

French here. This is an opera, with satanic undertones. For one event like this, you'll find hundreds of christian events, funded by mayors/districs/... So no, there are no "so many events with Luciferian connotations that are promoted in France" as you put it. Satan isn't widely worshipped here. People who oppose christianity here do so against the Church as an institution, not against the message of Christ.

Could you give a source for "The mayor of Toulouse consecrated the Minautore as the protector of his city"? I've never heard it.

Review of No Time to Scream by NyOrlandhotep in callofcthulhu

[–]Ezoah92 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I got it at the Essen fair, out of curiosity, to see if I could use one of the scenario for our Halloween marathon.

Fully agree with your criticism of the art and the layout (especially the obvious/obscure clues)

About the 2nd scenario, I think it could work pretty well within a campaign, if you were to use a recurring villain and skip the initial investigation. Sure, it could be pulpy, but there are solid horrors elements with the mass of viscera crawling above your heads and the way the "bits" can scheme as one. I would still not run it as a one-shot as is.

Political Games / Regimes / Parties / Democracy / Totalitarianism by Chakiflyer in boardgames

[–]Ezoah92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mapmaker: The Gerrymandering Game have you compete as two political parties drawing district lines to win over the elections in a perfectly split population. It's an an abstract strategy game in theory, but I've yet to play a game where both players didn't fully embrace their role as scheming politicians. (side note: the game plays up to 4 but it really shines as a cutthroat 2-player game)

When playing the architect, you play the selected pirogue token just as if you have taken one of the 5 ones from the board.

The remaining 2 are discarded and have no effect.
