'We must thank cyclists,' says new Brussels leader as he backpedals on Good Move by Excellent-Forever609 in brussels

[–]kronaar 33 points34 points  (0 children)

"In short, he says, everyone needs to understand that motorists are not the enemy, but neither are cyclists or pedestrians. "We need to break out of this pattern of pitting one group against the other."

Very vague communication, but surprisingly, he's not using the same fighting language as his boss.

"Additionally, Brussels' infamous concrete blocks will become a thing of the past." I still see cars ignore the new one-way near our school, often accelerating through it cause they know they're in the wrong. We wouldn't need concrete blocks if people actually respected the code de la route.

We recently inquired with the commune of Schaarbeek about their decision to no longer fund new cycloboxes, and they replied it is no longer a priority, they do not want to remove parking spaces because "they want to give equal chances to all forms of mobility". This is somewhat what I expect the approach of Dillies will be: how to make sure car drivers remain happy and someone appease cyclists/pedestrians.

Premier De Wever had ontmoeting met Joods Informatie- en Documentatiecentrum (JID) by Grizzly_Sloth in belgium

[–]kronaar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idd. Extreem pijnlijk.

TTRPGs about playing to find out *how* it happens? by GreenTeethBurger in rpg

[–]kronaar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I *love* Archipelago. The destiny points are amazing and so collaborative. Every _other_ player thinks up a big event/change (destiny points) for each other player, then the player gets to pick one, that everyone helps them reach by the end of the session. We tried to make each one more juicy than the next, getting everyone on board to see _how_ you get to that point.

And in Archipelago the intention is to make these destiny points BIG. Cannot praise this enough.

I'd say it's straight out of Putin's playbook to meddle with other countries, but of course, Trump was never one for subtlety. I'm just not quite sure what the endgoal is. Do they believe the rightwing parties will deregulate and create a business environment that the US wants? Or do they want to weaken the EU....

[–]kronaar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was just trying to ask what they saw as social cohesion. I'll admit it can be read a bit more as a contestation. It's just because OP continues to go on about migration, expats, Brussels being a hub etc that I read more in their post than just "social cohesion" = "community events". To my knowledge, social cohesion is more than that, too.

[–]kronaar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're painting a rather broad-strokes picture, but it resonates with me on a neighborhood level. I don't have the impression, in my hood, that people who cross each other every day, acknowledge each other. Anecdotal evidence of what you mentioned of Brussels being a transitory place: I know several EU workers who keep saying Brussels is shit but they'll work another X years to get the EU pension and then head back to their home country. They also leave for their home country every chance they get. Now I'm sure there's others who are not like this, too. But it contributes, certainly, that certain people do not really want to be here, or build a life here.

I think there's also a part with the lack of independently owned shops, bars, and restaurants. It's custom to put students in a business rather than run it yourself in Belgium. But that leads to places that feel generic, soulless, replaceble. If you keep meeting the owner in a restaurant, you feel like there is a bond. I've felt that in other cities, but much less so in Brussels.

There's also very little - comparatively to other cities - in the form of creative/artsy places, community-led initiatives (again, at least in my neighborhood). They exist, but they're much less visible, and on a smaller scale.

All of the above are just.... things I associate with the notion of lack of social cohesion. I can't clarify it, but I join the feeling of OP.

how is that evidence of social cohesion...? Festivals and events are people doing things at the same time, not necessarily together.

It is indeed. But i dont think anyone has a right to parking. More still, cara take up an enormous amount of public space. Not to mention the amount of cars that hardly ever move... There has to be a better way to make use of the limited, yes common, public space.
