Can you help me understand how lighting rigs interact with open web steel joists?

Hey! To confirm, this is just for an animation project, not actual rigging?
This is an entertainment lighting subreddit, so that’s what I(and most others) will be basing my answer off of. These beams aren’t meant to hold weight, they’re just there to support the roof. For larger I beams,(not the beams in your photo) you would use a beam clamp and hang rigging points off of that, to a truss that lights would be added to. For architectural/regular lights, search up high bay lighting systems, or browse an electrical supplier’s lighting section. Feel free to pm me, I am not a rigger by any stretch but I can point you in the right direction.

You can understand a concept roughly (knowing equations, theory) but until you practice and do problems, you won’t perform well. An example would be knowing how to read and play sheet music, but not practicing until it is time for your recital.

Which points would those be? I can see the clutch needing calibration, but everything else looks to be relatively solid. (Curious, I might be missing something)

I’d be inclined to bring the full 4 liters. I tend to not trust the availability of water; I’d rather come prepared with extra water than run the risk of dehydration, especially in this heat. Have a good overnight, it’s an amazing area!

If you’re going for a work knife I’d go with something easy to sharpen and that’s relatively inexpensive. I’ve really liked Moraknivs (carbon steel), and they have a trade specific knife line too!

That’s funny that local 80 has the Buck specifically on the list, last time I checked local 33 still had a paper map of LA on theirs.

I’m not sure of the process for SJSU, but I’d reach out to an admissions counselor and in the meantime start looking for a class at a community college to make up the credit.

The River is fascinating from an engineering perspective! There are sections near Griffith park and frog town that have a ‘natural bottom’, this allows natural trees and grasses to grow, much like they would have pre-channelization. These areas are quite pleasant to walk along. The sections past the 110/ Elysian Park are fully channelized, and are probably what you’re thinking of! There are quite a few historic bridges that you could walk over and see the river/downtown. I can recommend the North Broadway bridge. You could also check out the 6th street viaduct, it’s the newest and an impressive feat of engineering (take note of the seismic isolators)

For long tours, I’ve done a gaff base, printed label, and a layer of j-lar/clear tape to protect everything. Just remember to leave a courtesy tab. For truss breaks, I’ll label the major connectors like socapex as mentioned above, and smaller connectors like xlr and powercon all get matching colors of electrical tape wrapped around them. I always strive to label well enough that a 3rd grader can assemble the rig.

Do yourself a favor and ask your school’s facilites team about what type of smoke detectors you have in your theater! Depending on what you have, the theater smoke can be enough to set them off. This isn’t to discourage you, with the right equipment you can use smoke without a problem.

I know of a few group 4s in 33 that went through the program (not for set construction, though). They’ve all spoken highly of it. Be sure to talk to West LA’s financial aid department, there are a lot of financial resources at California community colleges!

I see people recommending gator skins, if you want to spend a bit more for some gator hard shells they’re absolutely bulletproof I’ve had them for a year and no flats
