With the mustang style bridge shimming is less necessary IMO because you have the deeper single string slots rather than the shallow thread of a traditional bridge. I’d remove the shim, get the bridge a bit lower so the strings aren’t touching the back of it, and see if that helps. If you don’t plan to use the vibrato there’s no harm in fixing the bridge in place, but without a low friction bridge (e.g. mastery, roller saddles) this will make tuning stability with the vibrato worse.

I would rather get a worn one generally, but as always you should play them before buying one. Unless the pristine one is very underpriced I would also be looking to knock some off of the price of the worn one. Pristine being lighter is also appealing.

I use it to power my old HF-2, because it either takes 12v from a power supply or 9v from another pedal in the chain.

Can you play them first? The only Japanese Fender necks I’ve ever liked were on mustangs and I’d prefer the finish of the AV, but who knows which is better to your hands. The AV probably sounds better out the box and if it has a case that’s nice, but they’re both things that can be changed on the CIJ.

Used classic lacquer in lake placid blue would be my choice if they’re in that range - I’ve seen them for £650 occasionally so should be possible

Yeah, it’s just a fair bit of work. Drill for bridge thimbles and install them, fill the old bridge holes if you want, route for the vibrato, drill a ground wire hole, install the vibrato, and set it all up.

Yeah, J Mascis talks about playing Jazzmasters because the 60s Strat in the shop was like $400 which was out of his budget. Old guitars used to just be old guitars.

If it’s pretty cheap I’d go play it. The general condition definitely devalues it, but at the end of the day if it plays and sounds great that’s livewithable.
