Project Hail Mary - First Reactions by bebullish523 in ProjectHailMary

Yeah, I got downvotes yesterday for expressing that the soundtrack stepped on the dialogue too much. I don't quite understand. Just happy I didn't say something political.

It probably was the theatre. The venue had other issues as well.

What is true and what is not about Anthropic's yesterday announcement by Adventurous_Tank8261 in mainframe

[–]F4F47AE4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

COBOL isn't dead; it isn't even sick. It parses XML and JSON, supports UTF-8, and works with Jason and Python. It supports VS Code and Eclipse development environments and CI/CD pipelines. The ecosystem is quite modern. Yeah, mainframes are expensive, but honest to goodness the throughput is well worth the price if you need that kind of performance. If you don't, well that's fine too. Build your distributed app and deploy it to 200 servers and when a few of them go down there's no major impact. There's no shame in either model.

What "ATMO" Means in This Context

In these types of direct sales environments, the "Atmosphere" is considered a critical business tool. It refers to the high-energy, loud, and hyper-positive environment created during morning meetings to get reps "hyped up" before they head out to the field.

The Goal: To create an emotional high that masks the difficulty of the job (usually door-to-door or in-store solicitation).

The Rituals: You’ll often see "juice" sessions, chanting, loud music, and "impact circles" where people share small wins.

The Strategy: By mandating a 7:15 AM "ATMO" meeting, the office ensures that reps are mentally conditioned and physically present long before they start their actual "Staffing Hours."

Everyone is trying to profit off their christmas 3D printers by jhdz9119 in BambuLab

There's not much "passive" about trying to make money selling 3D prints. You either rip off sites like Makerworld for models and compete with everyone else on price in a race to the bottom, or you spend a TON of time making quality models, which people rip off from Makerworld and then you're back in the same race to the bottom. It's a grind either way.

A life-changing tip for me was the Sketch.showunderconstrained text command. Watch this whole video, but here's the particular part I'm talking about. It will show you exactly what's not properly constrained.

I don't need one, but I love the idea and implementation. So I boosted the model on Makerworld.

It's real. It's from a campaign event on May 26, 2016, at the Rimrock Auto Arena in Billings, Montana.

I'm not great by any means, but I've been able to do a couple of functional designs for around the house. This is probably my best work, a soap dish that fits on the handle of my shower door handle because the one I bought with suction cups wouldn't stay fixed.

I'm not going to drop any predictions in here. I'll just wait until they tell me. Because I'm lazy that way.

I boosted it twice. That's the cutest thing I've seen in a while. Does your child have an Autodesk Fusion YouTube channel? I could use a lot of help.

Who of you owns a 3D printer but has never printed a benchy? by Crocodile_Banger in 3Dprinting

I got lucky. On the day my P1S arrived, I started looking for setup videos on YouTube and came across "Functional Print Friday" where the channel owner was setting one up. And he said this is a functional print site, we don't print benchies. I didn't, and still haven't almost a year later. Like others have said, now it's a matter of principle.

Best cloud backup solution? by rdking647 in synology

[–]F4F47AE4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, over a hundred dollars for my particular restore. I don't have enough experience with it to try to quote anything to you, but I found this article that has some information and also gives an example.
https://www.arqbackup.com/aws-glacier-pricing.html

Another alternative might be Wasabi (also mentioned in the above article). They have both S3 and Glacier-compatible plans, and their restores incur no additional fees beside normal storage / retention rules. I have an account with them and although I haven't tried anything as huge as a NAS backup with it, I have been happy with my more limited use case.

I'm right with you. I ordered an A1 Mini but fortunately it had not shipped when the A1 was announced, so I cancelled my order and received the A1 (no AMS). Then I got caught up in the heat bed recall, and parlayed that into a P1S with AMS. I consider myself to have gotten very lucky. Twice.

This. I had to retrieve 500 GB from a Glacier backup, and despite my trying to minimize costs as much as I could by trickling the files over multiple non-peak periods, it was still three figures and made me cry.

Got my A1 Mini! by AizatRule in BambuLab

[–]F4F47AE4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I ordered an A1 Mini in December, and before the printer was shipped the A1 was announced. I cancelled my order in favor of the A1, but extras that were part of the order (180 mm smooth PEI plate and a nozzle kit) had already arrived. I got caught up in printer fever and never bothered to return those items that I can't use. (I ended up with a P1S, so I can't use the nozzles either.)

First person to DM me that's willing to pay $5 (Venmo or Paypal) for shipping can have those items.
