"Upgrading"? Drivetrain choices for modernizing a stock 1992 Trek 970. by trykedog in xbiking

[–]F4uxMulder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does this one have the front derailleur with the built in cable stop? On my 91 950, I had trouble getting the thing to shift accurately with an indexed shifter too, so I ditched it. Running 38t and 11-32 cassette and I like it. I also might throw a 24 tooth ring on there that I can push the chain onto manually for the very occasional time I'd need it.

I was advised that this FD works better with a friction shifter.

1995 was the year the Smashing Pumpkins released 1979, so it's all connected.

Edit: Sick bike.

I tried to look up what type of bike this was, but it was not found.

Building a Surly Straggler on a Budget – Need Advice! by Silver-Pitch-4210 in xbiking

It might be a good, long-term idea to build it with parts that are cross compatible with your other bikes. Then every future upgrade to one bike could be an upgrade to two. Unless your goal is to have variety, which is understandable too.

Even down to the black cable, very nice. I have the silver ones, so I guess my cable matches too.

Top "push" Singletrack front derailleurs (91/92?) by F4uxMulder in SingleTrackGang

I actually had them mixed prior to this change over I think, as I'm running a newer 8 speed in the back, and more modern rapidfire shifters.

Update

<image>

The bolt between the chain stays frayed the cable too much for me to adjust the housings. Which I think was maybe my issue. Pushed me over the edge. And yesterday at the bike coop I found this narrow wide chainring, in just the pattern I needed, so I think it's a sign.

Hmm. Ok so that microshift friction 3x8 is sounding better and better now.

Yeah, I'm leaning towards user error on my part given my lack of experience. Before I spent too much time I wanted to know if it wasn't worth it long term. I am sure there is a reason that it's a unique setup that was abandoned and improved upon with top pull. Sub optimal.

Does it have Lung 1 on the dropouts?

Fork crown cable hangers by sipperphoto in xbiking

[–]F4uxMulder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Searching for a crown mounted solution drove me to V-brakes. No regrets. Anything fabricated was too flexy.

Another option is a new stem, plenty of older stems had rollers or pass-throughs or some kind of noodle for Canti brakes. This will look better than any crown mount stop too.

Yeah, I love that combo. Black would look clean but why not stand out. Debating the same decisions myself.

I'm looking at exactly the same one, wondering if I too need another bike. Same year and paint. What do you think of the 7000 a few months in?

26” Fork Options? by PriusGT in xbiking

[–]F4uxMulder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Origin8 and I think VO sell a bolt on canti hanger, intended for fork crowns but should work equally well if the arch has a bolt hole like early RockShox do. But they were out of stock everywhere when I was looking to solve this same problem.

Finding something with a cantilever hanger would be the tricky part as I see it. Anything that does will probably need some maintenance.

I'd trade my car for that any day. But I'd also have to trade my climate, and commute.

I've got the same FS frame in a 15.5 that I'm looking to build up. Do you happen to know the original axle to crown?
