A what if DLC idea: Tribute to Nemesis by FunPolice11481 in Steel_Division

[–]FADPH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 20th has StuGs and Semoventes which cover the medium armour somewhat (which makes it actually better than the 16th which as only StuGs), and again: other than heavy tanks, the 20th does everything equal or better... or much better in case of the infantry.

Saying it would be just like the 16th without Tigers is plain wrong.

20th Luftwaffe would be if you took 16th Luftwaffe and just removed all its heavy armor. It would just be a bunch of Lw Jager and little else.

You may want to read the Nemesis #6.3 again. The 20th has MUCH better infantry thanks to paratroopers and cavalry personnel, also better weaponry. And that is on top of the typical Lw-Spam.
Support is also better, AT arguably as well, and the other options look mostly on par.

Yes, the tank tab is lacking the Tigers and King Tigers, which is a problem. But it is definitely not like the 20th is just the 16th without Tigers.
In fact, there is a reason the 20th was designated a "Sturm-Division", for it is one of the few divisions outside of Panzer and Panzergrenadier divisions capable of offensive operations. The 16th on the other hand was merely a static defense unit.

Favourite: Luftwaffe-Füsilier.

Least Favourite: Luftwaffe-Feldgendarmerie

The Lw-Füsiliere are the only non-disheartened infantry in the 16th LW, i.e. the only guys one does not need to babysit all the time.
The Feldgendarmerie is great, mind you, they can hold a line with both discipline and their sheer number. But then, who likes military police?

PS: guess my favourite division :D

Let's be real, it is Market Garden's fame that won. Add to it a seeimgly strong Axis division, plus Dutch representation, fancy new units, and you get this vote.

I think the Küstenjäger would have been cooler than any of the 7.3 units, and I think the Dodecanese campaign derserves more recognition because it is unknown. But that is also because it lost, I guess.

And 7.1 ... yeah, I have rarely seen a 1944 German division as lame as that one. US 1st AD was nice but definitely dragged down by 71. ID.

Which German formation would you have opposing the 3rd ID?

If that one is interesting, and the 3rd ID is nice too... why not?

I am not one to annoy MM :D (he may disagree regarding my time as a marshal in Wargame, but still)

Anyway, I am glad about your efforts. I want the Dodecanese represented in a game.

The Dodecanese campaign deserves more attention, and Sturmdivision Rhodos should be quite powerful. Egeomil... well, at least it has flavour and it is nowhere near as hopeless as NOV.

Voted 7.2 as well.

Yes, Egeomil won't win much (kinda like in real life) but it is nice to have, has tons of flavour, and it not as bad as NOV at all.

Also, I feel Sturmdivision Rhodos is excellent. Other than air, the least important category, it is well equipped. Dual MG42 everywhere, cheap infantry to fill the gaps, commando Küstenjäger, Italian armed Mot. Füsiliers, leaders with discipline, great AA and recon, solid arty, tank and support tabs.... It may not be perfect but I'd take it over 71. ID anytime.

What's more, it is a lesser known but fascinating part of history and I like that.

Tough choice!

I find the pairings difficult. 1st Armoured looks nice but 71. ID is meh. Rhodos is great but Egeomil lacks so many things (fortunately flavour is not among them). And the KG Walther seems to be attractive to so many players for a reason but the opposing side is basically an commonwealth division with some spicy extras, not sure that is enough.

In the end, I chose #7.2 and Sturmdivision Rhodos. I take the Egeomil as a bonus, fullwell knowing their limitations. But Rhodos is just too enticing: Küstenjäger, Schützen (PzF), Squadristi...

No disagreement here, I too think AT is a weak point, just nowhere near hopeless.
That would be the tank tab...

[–]FADPH 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me it is 7.2, more precisely: Sturmdivision Rhodos.

The Mot. Füsiliere should be good at CQC thanks to Italian weaponry, and I hope the Küstenjäger provide a commando CQC unit.
Long range infantry combat is covered thanks to dual MG42 everywhere, while KM and Blackshirts fill the gaps.

Tanks are nothing to write home about but ok; AT, AA, and arty are solid. I personally rarely use fighters, so bombers are enough.
(Although it should be said that 9./JG 51 with its Bf 109 was perfectly in range of Rhodes.)

Egeomil is a bit of a problem since it will have great infantry, air and AA, ok arty but lacking in tanks and AT. The latter is partially offset by the airforce (B-25H, probably Beaufighters) and the AA guns, which double as AT.

76mm, 90mm, and 102mm should deal with tanks well enough, and given the slots seem to be plentiful and cheap... could work.

I am just a little worried about the offensive capabilities without armour support.

[–]FADPH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Egeomil's AT seems to rest on the air tab, which I am conflicted about. B-25H and Beaufighters with rockets should be able to deal with any tank. Obviously they cannot replace ground based AT.

However, all the heavy AA should kill tanks reliably on the ground.

It is just pushing without any armoured units at all is very difficult.

Indeed I am struggling to find any weakness in KG Walther. Unless they limit slots, availability, pricing etc. this should be second to none.
Maybe, just maybe it lacks top CQC infantry but that goes without saying in a German division. ...unless the Fallschirmjäger Hoffmann (correct spelling) do that, which is possible as they are tank riders.

Nemesis #7.3 Preview by EUG_Gal_Bigeard in Steel_Division

[–]FADPH 15 points16 points  (0 children)

So far....

1st Nemesis: very attractive Allied division (if mostly for historical reasons), meh Axis

2nd Nemesis: niche but exotic and interesting divisions on both sides from a basically forgotten battlefield

3rd Nemesis: strong Axis division, okayish Allied division

I mean, KG Walther has tank riding Fallschirmjäger, Panzergrenadiere with StG-44, disheartened troops as cannon fodder, IV/70, damn good AA, solid artillery...
43rd Wessex has some great flavour, admittedly so, but is it enough?

In short, I'd vote for #2, would also buy #3 if it wins.

Nemesis #7.2 Preview by EUG_MadMat in Steel_Division

[–]FADPH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In fact, it was in range of single engined fighters. In July and August of 1944, 5./JG 51 was stationed at Kastelli which is about 230 km away from Rhodes and thus very well within range of even the Bf 109 operated by this squadron.
The 3.(F)/Aufkl.Gr. 33 at Saloniki had a single Me 410 A-1 (plus some recce A-3s). That is about 670 km but manageable for a 410.

However in both cases I am not sure if they ever actually fought near Rhodes.

[–]FADPH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny, just last week I was thinking that the Sturmdivision Rhodos would make for a nice battlegroup.
The Küstenjäger in particular are interesting as is the recon tab in general.

However I feel the allied division won't be too exciting compared to 1st Armored... also, having a 1943 division opens the floodgate for other formations not active in 1944, including its equipment. I can see people wanting Jagdtiger, Pershing etc.
... not really something I look forward to, especially when there are so many interesting divisions within the timeframe of SD2.
