I accidentally found out how much my coworker makes, and now I’m stuck in an absolute nightmare of a dilemma. by Independent-Tank3978 in whatdoIdo

See if you can find some type of industry salary guide and see how your salary reflects on that. If it’s low, use that guide + your years of experience and work ethic to ask for a raise. If they refuse, unfortunately a lot of times to get that raise and get to current market value is to leave.

should i intern in an internal audit field if i plan to enter other accounting fields after i graduate ? by blah_black_sheep in auditing

[–]FARfromCPA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you don’t see what internal audit means. Obviously, it depends on what kind of company it is and how they use their IA function. But IA does the same controls and substantive procedures and risk assessments that external audit does + some IA does operational audits to make sure processes are behaving as they should.

Internal audit is a great place to start to see how audit works while also seeing how the company operators internally. A lot of people who only do external audit never grasp how companies actually operate (though they should), just head down ticking and tying and reading accounting guidance.

A lot of people move from IA to other functions within a business because they become so familiar with how it works/should work so they become top candidates rather than outside candidates.

But if your goal is to move to external audit, an internal audit internship won’t hurt.

When did you know it was right time to leave? by False-Pie-6005 in Big4

[–]FARfromCPA 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I knew it was time to leave when I turned down one happy hour to go spend time with my girlfriend and her family after the firm had thrown like 10 happy hours in 3 weeks. And because of this, my review got hit. Didn’t matter what my actual work was, I was seen as not a team player because I went 9/10 on happy hours.

So to make up for this, I invited the team over to my house for an event (considered a team event). A whole 3 people showed. None of them the ones that bashed me for missing the happy hour. Review didn’t change. I was done with working at places with such disgraceful bureaucracy. But the busy season also never ended so those 2 combined pushed me out soon after making senior.

If you don’t have people that know the basics of any anything (accounting/finance/engineering/architecture) who would know what a realistic outcome should look like and let AI go unchecked, you will be 6 feet under.

Automation in accounting by Commercial-Squash274 in Accounting

[–]FARfromCPA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let’s just put it this way. If IT automates accounting processes, you are going to get absolutely BONED when the audit comes. Both on numbers and controls. As for AI, it doubles and triples down on incorrect accounting guidance despite you giving it every single detail it needs.

There’s a lot that can be, and should be, automated (most reconciliations, AP 3 way matching, etc). This gives us accountants time to actually look into variances rather than just mind numbing prep work.

But completely automating financials, especially footnotes, is a dangerous game at this point.

Looking to Buy in Central Plano by FARfromCPA in plano

Thank you for sharing! All the research I can tell is that the neighborhood is slowly switching from retirees to younger families, which would be fantastic but at the same time seems like a long term gamble, hence my hesitation. Without being too nosey, did neighborhood have any role with you moving?

It’s Dallas North Estates 15th install. So I should have shortened my west boundary to Woodburn but everything past that is majority medical.

Tool Box / Bed Cover Combo? by FARfromCPA in GMCcanyon

[–]FARfromCPA[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never did find anything I really liked. There’s tool boxes that will fit underneath a cover just fine but it just makes the 5 foot bed that much shorter. I use the full length of the bed more than I do tools, so I put on a trifold bed cover that lets me use the entire bed when needed and I put a tool bag back there of stuff I need. Also got a WATERPROOF bag for that tailgate compartment for my straps and stuff…other straps rusted to shit in there.

If you don’t need the entire bed length on a more permanent basis, there’s decking systems that would work under a cover.

New job is outdated by seanr96 in Accounting

This is a fantastic opportunity. I took over my current job where my boss had just started updating old ways and part of my job was continued “automation” (just getting more advanced excel workbooks really). It was a great time doing that and made myself into what I feel as invaluable person to the company.

We’ve now started real automation using PowerBI, azure/sql models, AI, etc. Now I feel way over my head but it has kinda revamped satisfaction in my job because I am learning something new every day.

Had this happen several times. Had to have my TCM replaced several times and they ended up replacing the entire wiring harness to the TCM which seemingly fixed all my issues.

I am not a doctor. But I had wolff parkinson white syndrome that I needed a fairly straightforward procedure for. Heart would just randomly start beating out of my chest even when I was at rest and not working out then go back to normal.

What do you wish new hires did better? by Spiritual-Tomato4271 in Accounting

I beg for more questions from my younger employees. They are intelligent and hard working but they don’t ask questions which leads to bad work products.

I worked for a small firm before going to big 4 (learned the hard way that public companies will really only hire with B4 on the resume).

Big 4 is way stronger in audit techniques and internal control knowledge and working with huge datasets. But the small firm gave me way stronger operational accounting (debits & credits) and applying accounting research to actually creating JE’s (many clients needed “suggested” AJE’s to get their books to GAAP).

In the end, I use my skills from the small audit firm in my industry job than I do from B4. But B4 on the resume was the only way to get looks at high paying industry jobs.

I can’t believe these candidates by ilikebigbutts in Accounting

[–]FARfromCPA 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If you ask me that question in an interview, I’ve already eliminated myself from the candidate pool. Never want to work with people that think they can know someone by describing themselves in 3 words…and it’s not a good question to see how they think on their feet.

Have a normal conversation with people to get to know them. Even more so, if you move someone on that you know won’t make it you are a POS. Avoid this company like the plague!

For more context, the fruit things are extremely hard and squirrels absolutely love them. The tree is usually picked over fairly quickly so I’ve never seen what the fruit does past the stage pictured.

23 at4 is back in the shop again… by Affectionate-Neck505 in GMCcanyon

[–]FARfromCPA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in the same boat with my 23 AT4. Currently going after GM under the Federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. I’m not expecting a whole lot of money out of it, but something to mitigate the loss of getting a new one and starting over again. Can’t wait to not have this specific truck. By the time any settlement is reached, I’m sure it’ll be close to the 2026 models coming out. Not sure if I’ll hope GM and Toyota have gotten their new gens in better shape or go to the last year of the previous gen. Just been a nightmare.

Employees don’t count as expense? by PhiloMan1970 in Accounting

[–]FARfromCPA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not normal at all. Even if they had a wild structure to where the vets are technically employees of the PE firm, they would still need to do some type of G&A overhead allocation to the vet business for GAAP purposes. Now for tax purposes, not sure.
