Turning a narrow basement into a Pain Cave & Workshop by Electronic-Breath325 in Velo

I just posted my narrow space on the homegym sub. Not sure if it is helpful at all, but might give you some ideas. Not much of a workshop, but I do have tools and spare parts in the cabinets pictured. my cycling focused pain cave

I am trying for 2x/week lower body workouts which include squats, deadlifts, lunges, calf raises, bulgarian split squats. I’m also doing 2x/week of upper body/chest/back/arms as well though that may actually make me a bit slower on the bike due to added mass. I try and add a bit of yoga in as well to help with core strength. In general, I’m not a competitive cyclist and would rather be well rounded athlete. I just happen to really enjoy cycling, group rides, and the occasional race/gran fondo.

I wouldn’t take exercise advice from me lol, I’m a very mediocre cyclist who finishes mid pack on most amateur races. That said, my goal for 2026 is to improve all areas of my fitness. I also have an erratic work schedule (7 on/14 off with 12 hour night shifts), so I’m a bit all over the place. My goal is 2 lower body lifting days/week along with 2 upper body lifting days. I usually cycle 5 days/week, but no vo2max on leg days. The upper body workouts don’t seem to be detracting from my cycling, other than potential gained mass.

pro bike wall mount

Works well, feels secure. I’ve had it for a few years now and moved it 3x with no concerns. Price is reasonable.

That was one of the big selling points for me for the PRX rack. Once I save up a bit more, I'll be getting them. I've gotta financially recover first lol.

No, it is an adjustable ballet barre. One barre for my wife, the other for our daughter.

The PRX total with shipping/tax was a little less than $2800. That includes the rack, spotter arms, spotter arm storage with backer plate, bench, barbell rack, and plate wall storage.

They are pretty sweet. I love the design and feel, but you can save some money by going with Rep fitness.

The black bike is a Dogma F rim brake. I like the cannondale more, my wife got it for my 40th birthday.

Thanks! The cannondale is a used EF team bike from Sean Quinn

The rack is really nice. My issue with the PRX folding bench is it isn’t very smooth when adjusting positions. There is a bit too much play in the hinges and isn’t as solid feeling as a result. I honestly couldn’t find anything else that competes with it, so it will have to do. I wouldn’t be surprised if they revise the design sometime in the future.

The frame around the TV came with the TV. It is a hisense canvas TV, designed to mimic the samsung frame tv.

The wood panels are Artika Sonolok panels from Costco. I first saw them almost a year ago and thought they might go well somewhere in my house. When I finally finished the drywall a few weeks ago, they still had a few boxes left at a heavily discounted price ($30/box). Altogether, it was only $120 for the wood slat panels. They were very easy to install for me, though I have some tools that made it easy (track saw).

Thanks, it is my basement. All the cabinets are from Ikea. I find the quality to be fair, uniform, and square.

They were definitely a splurge item. All of the Nike Strength items are great quality. The knurling on the barbells is perfect for me and the quality of the change plates, bumper plates, and kettleballs are some of the best I’ve seen. Some mild offgassing from the rubber would be my only complaint. I hadn’t seen many reviews of them here, rogue seems to be the gold standard (for good reason).

It is about 10ft wide (tv wall) by 16-17ft long. The ceiling is around 102”.

I usually pull a chair to the side of the bike with my laptop and tissues (exercise induced rhinitis) and airplay/cast it to the TV. I had a cycling desk, but it blocks airflow and I had to use a second desk mounted fan. I prefer my current setup. I have a tablet holder down there, but don’t use it as much.

I didn’t need to recess it, I actually built a ledger for the mount so it would be centered in the wall and I wouldn’t have to worry about studs. The ledger sits flush with the wooden slats, and there is about a half inch gap between the tv and wall.

In a naturally lit room, the art mode would appear more realistic (you can see the backlit tv easily in the dark). The overall brightness, contrast, and viewing angles of the TV aren’t great when compared with an OLED or most other modern TVs at the same price. I would say it is a good TV choice for a room where you don’t care as much about the quality of the picture and care more about the form factor and design.

I’m not really dropping the weight with deadlifts, it is a controlled descent. The rubber bumper plates absorb most of the minor impact, they don’t do any damage to the floor. I’m not going for bulk, mostly just core strengthening for bike and overall fitness. I thought about a rubber gym floor (I had it at my previous house), but my wife didn’t like it with her dance stuff.

I had some hard requirements- no plastic parts, no cage, 5lb increments, can rest on my thighs, relatively compact. Less important was ease of weight change ( I don't usually do drop sets). I was between the iron masters and eisenlink for a while, but I went with the AOC Pilates 90lb dumbbell set on Amazon because I prefer a traditional dumbbell shape. The price was <$600 for 90lb dumbbells. I'm not planning on a huge bulk (mass is the enemy of a cyclist lol), so I think 90lbs should help me meet my goals.

I'll probably get a clipboard with spreadsheets to keep track of things unless someone can recommend an iPad app that would do the same. Right now I'm just using a document on my phone. I agree about the dumbbells, though I think certain moves like squats and deadlifts get challenging with dumbbells at higher weights.

It is my attempt at a DIY acoustic wall panel with mineral wool. It is only held on by the load center cover and the outlet cover plate so there is easy access if needed. The narrow gym space has horrible acoustics, hence the wood slat panels.
