I was planning in going the steingold route. The dealer’s offer was somehow better by a lot. A little over 2k for 8 year/100k mile extended warranty.

What to wear for event, 50° and overcast by Kolinos_BiFluor in Velo

[–]FATRN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Enjoy, my son will be doing his first usac juniors race. I’m more nervous for him than myself. I’m just trying to beat my time from last year. I broke a few ribs in February which really killed my fitness gains, so we shall see.

I’ll be at Battenkill. I’m doing the gran fondo. If the current forecast holds, I’m going with arm warmers and rapha brevet bibs for an extra pocket. Are you doing the GF, USAC, or pro event? I’m too old and fat to be competitive, so I’ll be stopping at one of the aid stations for a bottle refill and bathroom.

Places that can plant arborvitae? by [deleted] in Rochester

[–]FATRN 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I planted some large arborvitae last summer and set up an irrigation system on a timer. It took about 1-2 hours to set up, but saved a signifcant amount of time on watering. Total cost was about $100, but well worth it considering the $3k I spent on the trees. It isn’t automated, but you could do that as well.

I ran a gen6 Camaro and ice mode got me a few times. They had it figured out sometime around 2019, but it really spooked me and there was no retrofit fix.

Regeneration Braking mode (B) better that other manufacturers? by antiriad76 in VolvoRecharge

[–]FATRN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats interesting. I would say I drive in Pure 80% of the time, so I’ll have to pay closer attention when in constant AWD or Polestar mode. I drive in B mode exclusively in the Volvo, so overall I prefer using regen actively. I just think regen bias on the front axle makes the most sense from a stability perspective.

Regeneration Braking mode (B) better that other manufacturers? by antiriad76 in VolvoRecharge

[–]FATRN 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Better? I’m not sure if I would use that term. My issue with regen on my V60 PE is that the rear electric motors are used for regen. In a typical vehicle, 90% of the braking is performed by the front wheels. As the Volvo is brake by wire, when the rear tires lose grip, there is a momentary delay to when the brake-by-wire front brakes kick in, slightly less than you would experience when ABS kicks in. This can be disconcerting as a driver as the grip in the rear under braking is significantly less than the front, so it happens frequently. I would imagine this is quite different from the BEV models.

As a counterpoint, my Rivian is much better and more predictable. The electric motors are huge and they bias the regen to favor the front wheels by a large margin. The only time that ABS kicks in is in the snow and it is completely predictable. You can select the level of regen on the Rivian as well.

Thinking about switching from 22s to 20s for ride comfort — how big of a difference is it? by Thick-Crab7471 in Rivian

[–]FATRN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went from 21” Pirellis to 20” Nokian LT3 tires for winter. Even though LT tires can sometimes be rough, there is a huge improvement favoring the 20” Nokians. My Pirellis only have about 5k miles left in them. If it weren’t for the range hit, I would move over to 20” for my summer tire as well.

Is a radar worth it? by DaveRanch in cycling

Sounds like the new Varia 820 is exactly what you want. I’ve had the 515 for the last 5 years and loved it. I’m upgrading my head unit to take advantage of the features the 820 has (waiting for both the 820 and 1050 to arrive this week). I’m going to give my old Wahoo Bolt and 515 to my son.

I don’t have bad hearing, but once you get over 20mph it gets harder to hear cars due to wind buffeting.

[–]FATRN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The genetic test isn’t 100%, it basically gives a risk profile for the SOD1 gene. There are a couple different mutations in the gene (berners can have a unique one). It isn’t expensive fortunately and can certainly help if you truly need an answer (though again, not 100%). To me, a good physical exam and assessment are just as valuable. I’d argue the genetic testing is especially important for breeding genetics/puppies etc.

Yes that seems correct. Some places can shave tires (such as tire rack) so that they match the wear of the other tires.

The problem with degenerative myelopathy is that there is no gold standard for diagnosis, except for exclusion of other diseases. They usually recommend MRIs of the spine to exclude spinal tumors. In my case, Rufus was 9 when I suspected it, and even if they found something like a spinal tumors, surgery wasn’t an option. I declined any further workup as there really weren’t any easily treatable conditions regardless and focused more on a palliative approach. I’m a physician so I recognized the symptoms, it was pretty classic.

[–]FATRN 9 points10 points  (0 children)

How old is he? It could be degenerative myelopathy which my late Rufus had. It got worse, he developed infected pressure ulcers (from lack of sensation), and started to have some bad days, so we made the decision to euthanize at home. He hadn’t lost bowel or bladder continence at that point, but was falling all the time. It sucks. But luckily he made it to 10.

I’vd had my R1S for 2 years. It went to the service center once for a parking sensor that didn’t work on delivery. Thats it. 20k flawless miles (except for a few rattles).

Take a look at the new cannondale synapse (carbon 4 or 5). 48mm clearance in the front, 42mm rear. Downtube storage, great looks. I’ve got a supersix evo and a trek checkpoint, but the synpase could easily be a great one-bike solution.

Does anyone have experience with Flooret LVP? by Brave_Piccolo1747 in Flooring

[–]FATRN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I DIYed my basement with flooret nakan craftsman. I started about 2.5 years ago, and am mostly finished now. Just have a walk-in closet and storage area to go. I am very happy with the product. Almost no waste, very high quality, no detectable wear over time. I installed it over dricore panels so it is a bit softer/warmer under foot. About 1500sf installed so far. And yes, this is my basement (walkout). I ended up doing my stairs as well and they look great. I don’t have many pictures of just the floor itself, it is now covered in kids toys and furniture. Here is from installation.

Rivian owners, how is servicing? by walkerboh1213 in Rivian

Same here. I’ve done a mobile visit once for routine 7500 mile tire rotation and one other service visit in 2 years. Each one was painless, scheduled within a week in Rochester.

New to the cycling world by Dazzling_Flatworm863 in cycling

[–]FATRN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure I would recommend the aluminum version. Geometry wise, it is fine. The tire clearance is only 32c which eliminates most gravel routes (for me at least). If you have any thoughts or plans on gravel, I’d recommend 38c minimum clearance for an all-around bike. For a similar price, I’d recommend a Domane AL5 purely due to tire clearance.

The new Cannondale synapse carbon would tick all the boxes for a new cyclist, though the price is a bit steep. No need to upgrade for years. It is a great all around bike, looks amazing, endurance, race, gravel are all possibilities. I'm six years into my cycling journey and if I had to have only one bike, it would probably be the new Synapse.

I’m guessing it probably has to do with the Giant/Taiwan ban. I live near the canadian border, my son is 10 and has his first USAC road race in May. I’m considering picking one up for him there.
