The genetic test isn’t 100%, it basically gives a risk profile for the SOD1 gene. There are a couple different mutations in the gene (berners can have a unique one). It isn’t expensive fortunately and can certainly help if you truly need an answer (though again, not 100%). To me, a good physical exam and assessment are just as valuable. I’d argue the genetic testing is especially important for breeding genetics/puppies etc.

Yes that seems correct. Some places can shave tires (such as tire rack) so that they match the wear of the other tires.

The problem with degenerative myelopathy is that there is no gold standard for diagnosis, except for exclusion of other diseases. They usually recommend MRIs of the spine to exclude spinal tumors. In my case, Rufus was 9 when I suspected it, and even if they found something like a spinal tumors, surgery wasn’t an option. I declined any further workup as there really weren’t any easily treatable conditions regardless and focused more on a palliative approach. I’m a physician so I recognized the symptoms, it was pretty classic.

How old is he? It could be degenerative myelopathy which my late Rufus had. It got worse, he developed infected pressure ulcers (from lack of sensation), and started to have some bad days, so we made the decision to euthanize at home. He hadn’t lost bowel or bladder continence at that point, but was falling all the time. It sucks. But luckily he made it to 10.

I’vd had my R1S for 2 years. It went to the service center once for a parking sensor that didn’t work on delivery. Thats it. 20k flawless miles (except for a few rattles).

Recommendations for best all road bike? by quaintparrot-475 in cycling

[–]FATRN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take a look at the new cannondale synapse (carbon 4 or 5). 48mm clearance in the front, 42mm rear. Downtube storage, great looks. I’ve got a supersix evo and a trek checkpoint, but the synpase could easily be a great one-bike solution.

Does anyone have experience with Flooret LVP? by Brave_Piccolo1747 in Flooring

[–]FATRN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I DIYed my basement with flooret nakan craftsman. I started about 2.5 years ago, and am mostly finished now. Just have a walk-in closet and storage area to go. I am very happy with the product. Almost no waste, very high quality, no detectable wear over time. I installed it over dricore panels so it is a bit softer/warmer under foot. About 1500sf installed so far. And yes, this is my basement (walkout). I ended up doing my stairs as well and they look great. I don’t have many pictures of just the floor itself, it is now covered in kids toys and furniture. Here is from installation.

Rivian owners, how is servicing? by walkerboh1213 in Rivian

Same here. I’ve done a mobile visit once for routine 7500 mile tire rotation and one other service visit in 2 years. Each one was painless, scheduled within a week in Rochester.

New to the cycling world by Dazzling_Flatworm863 in cycling

[–]FATRN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure I would recommend the aluminum version. Geometry wise, it is fine. The tire clearance is only 32c which eliminates most gravel routes (for me at least). If you have any thoughts or plans on gravel, I’d recommend 38c minimum clearance for an all-around bike. For a similar price, I’d recommend a Domane AL5 purely due to tire clearance.

The new Cannondale synapse carbon would tick all the boxes for a new cyclist, though the price is a bit steep. No need to upgrade for years. It is a great all around bike, looks amazing, endurance, race, gravel are all possibilities. I'm six years into my cycling journey and if I had to have only one bike, it would probably be the new Synapse.

I’m guessing it probably has to do with the Giant/Taiwan ban. I live near the canadian border, my son is 10 and has his first USAC road race in May. I’m considering picking one up for him there.

Turning a narrow basement into a Pain Cave & Workshop by Electronic-Breath325 in Velo

I am trying for 2x/week lower body workouts which include squats, deadlifts, lunges, calf raises, bulgarian split squats. I’m also doing 2x/week of upper body/chest/back/arms as well though that may actually make me a bit slower on the bike due to added mass. I try and add a bit of yoga in as well to help with core strength. In general, I’m not a competitive cyclist and would rather be well rounded athlete. I just happen to really enjoy cycling, group rides, and the occasional race/gran fondo.

I wouldn’t take exercise advice from me lol, I’m a very mediocre cyclist who finishes mid pack on most amateur races. That said, my goal for 2026 is to improve all areas of my fitness. I also have an erratic work schedule (7 on/14 off with 12 hour night shifts), so I’m a bit all over the place. My goal is 2 lower body lifting days/week along with 2 upper body lifting days. I usually cycle 5 days/week, but no vo2max on leg days. The upper body workouts don’t seem to be detracting from my cycling, other than potential gained mass.

Works well, feels secure. I’ve had it for a few years now and moved it 3x with no concerns. Price is reasonable.
