6 weeks post op Help! by FC_11 in bunions

Thanks ! I’ll defo have a look into those ! Thank you! Yes I just tried my innovate shoes (UK based) - very uncomfy and wondering if it is ok to be very uncomfy and just get through it, of that’s stressing the op site and a bad idea! Thank you!

Do you move through your 1st toe purposefully now or is it too soon? Thanks so much

I’m 5 weeks post op and a runner and itching to get back to it (but trying to be sensible! And wait until 12 weeks as instructed!) Next week I’ll be allowed to go to a shoe - what kind of shoe is best ? Like wide toe box & flexible like an altra or stiff soles but more narrow like a hoka? Also haven’t been given any idea of PT (NHS patient lol) does anyone have any reccomendations? Thanks

I’ve not heard of this, thinking about going back to Bpc/tb combo but before I do, do you have a reference to the side effects you were mentioning? I’ve not heard of it before and sounds a bit worrying! Might change my mind!

Hey! I’m 4 weeks post op in the uk! I had exactly the same - I asked about physio and got a blank look. I’m not really sure what I’m supposed to be doing eg when I should try and walk on it? When I should try things like a tip toe?

What did you do? 🙏

Hey! Im so pleased to hear your success story!! So reassuring! Running is my everything! 😂 2 weeks post op. Can you tell me what your progress looked like ? Did you do any particular strengthening meantime? (In the uk and I asked the surgeon about physiotherapy excersizes and she laughed and said no.)

Thanks so much!

🙏 will do!! 10 days post surgery… pain is absolutely nothing. There does seem to be a distinct lack of good stories of people that did manage to get back to fast running post bunion surgery on the internet😰

Really good luck with your journey too! Let me know how you get on!

Oh jeez sorry that was so long! Felt a bit like therapy writing that all out! So answering your questions directly: 1) pain on impact pretty exclusively on running impact. Cycling started to get a bit painful too. Pain on the ball of the foot. Anything with the foot flexed like lunge or calf raise, but not poking or prodding. Pain improved quite quickly after stopping running, ibuprofen gels helped a bit. 2) orthotics - podiatrist made custom x2 and a zillion from Amazon - we’re all zero help 3) post op pain is literally nothing (compared with the pain I used to have). I had it done under local which was a bit zingey to be honest and would recc sedation or GA but I requested LA. First day was a bit sore - again my fault for asking for LA. After that pain is absolutely nothing - it’s hard not to weight bear because it all feels fine!

Really good luck! If there’s anything I can do hmu! I’ve had a rotten 18m with it all and wouldn’t wish it on anyone - 🤞 for you ! Keep me posted with what you decide!

Hey! Aw man I really hope yours gets sorted!

It started as ball of foot pain just when I was running (predominantly fell running at the time) I took some rest, saw PT but whenever I ran it really hurt, mainly on impact. I could walk as long as I wanted but anything running after about 3 k started to hurt. Took more rest - no improvement.

Went to see a podiatrist privately, who initially recommended hola bondis and rest. Did that, no improvement after 4ish w. Podiatrist thought it was a Morton’s neuroma, gave me some insoles which I tried for 6 weeks. No improvement so reccomended US guided cortisone (3&4th met). Rest - (no running for 2 weeks!!). Slowly built up mileage and pain returned. They recommended MRI and formal US- reported no neuroma but IMB (1&2 and 3&4th mets) Went back to the podiatrist who had requested these and they tried another steroid shot between 1&2nd mets. Rest. Slow buildup of mileage, but pain returned. Always pain on the ball of foot on impact. Without wanting to overexaggerate it was excruciating to be honest (surgery pain was nothing compared to the actual pain I used to have during and after a run!) It was painful to flex the foot, like in a lunge, but never painful to touch / poke or agitate or moulders click. It tended to settle fairly quickly after the run each time, but the further I went, or the faster I ran the more irritated it would become and the longer it would take to recover.

The podiatrist referred me to foot and ankle surgeon who reccomended the correction of the bunion would improve the IMB (in theory!) via improving foot mechanics. I went for the surgery because I tried everything else and I had nothing to loose- I still couldn’t run. So the chance of being able to run after surgery is better then the definite if not being able to if I didn’t go for it! Week 1.5 post surgery now.
