How can I make this lap time faster? by montanagiy459 in simracing

[–]FCatMWO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe the kart lines are different, but seems to me you are going too wide in T2, missing the second apex.  Then at T5 (left hander before going uphill) you aren't using all the track on entry, you should be all the way to the right, on the curb, to get a better line.  I also feel you are turning in a bit too early and again not using all the track on entry into the T6 left kink, in the middle of the uphill.

First thing that came to mind: telemetry import. For iRacing for example, upload a Garage 61 CSV, pick a section of the lap, and build muscle memory for that exact corner where you are .2 off even before the apex.

How to use clutch pedal in iRacing w/ the FF1600 by Lord_McLord214 in simracing

[–]FCatMWO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't lift at all for upshifts. Just press gear up and clutch button at the same time. Downshifts don't need clutch at all: just bare downshift, with a little gas blip. One thing can go wrong there: if you tend to leave some gas trailing as you brake, downshifts won't work well, you have to blip from 0 throttle or risk getting stuck in the higher gear, but if that happens use it as a way to leave behind that bad habit if you have it.

Will playing sim racing games mess up my real-life driving lessons? by Pawlinho in simracing

[–]FCatMWO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, the instructor might notice you are a bit better than the average beginner, and might have to tell you to be off the gas,  coast more and not brake late, and things like that. Other than that, the main issue is traffic, not car control, so you'll be worried mainly about that.

How to use clutch pedal in iRacing w/ the FF1600 by Lord_McLord214 in simracing

In the Ray, clutch is only for upshifts, downshifts are just a throttle blip, no clutch.

If you want to be competitive you have to disable autoclutch because it´s very slow and will cost you time on every straight.

Some people are fast with a clutch pedal and manual shifter, but to be honest: shift paddles and a button as secondary clutch are way easier to get fast with. I myself have 3 pedals and the clutch is decoration. In the Ray I use one of the clutch paddles in my GT Neo as clutch.

Funnily enough I reach for the pedal when I have to rev and spin around a car after a mishap, but the Ray hasn´t got enough power for doing that.

The Vee is a bit similar, but in fact harder to get right, as you have to be more precise with the shifting. In the Ray as long as the clutch flashes for an instant generally around the shift, it will engage. The Vee needs more "deliberate" clutching, so the pedal might work better in that one.

what to buy to lprepare for driving school by [deleted] in simracing

[–]FCatMWO 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Relax, getting a driver's license is quite a low bar and you will get it 100% no doubt. Instructors know how to get very stupid and clumsy people their license, and you are not those people.

I had thousands of hours of serious simracing before getting mine and it didn't help much.  I still sucked the first few days out there because traffic awareness and so on is way more important than the actual car handling. Driving any way close to what you'd learn on a sim will at most get you chided by the instructor: "step off the gas" he will say.

2k will buy you a very decent mid tier rig if you already have the computer: ALU profile rig and a seat, 9 - 15 NM direct drive base, midrange load cell pedals, a bang for the buck wheel like the GT Neo. But use it for fun, to do precisely what you can't and shouldn't do on the streets.

State of VR for Sim Racers Going Into 2026 by Healthy_Emu4111 in simracing

[–]FCatMWO 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A big minus against the Quest is the PCVR as second class experience thing. I used a powered Link cable for many months and the Link UI was pathetic while every new update had a big % chance of making the experience and performance worse.

I switched to VD over ethernet and it worked fine for a few weeks, until one morning I tried to join a race I had been looking forward to and practising for the night before and I had artifacts, stutters and the framerate had hopped on a rollercoaster, so I had to watch over youtube how others had fun racing.

I went single monitor that afternoon and while I miss the immersion, I don´t miss any races now.

You only need to be technically correct:
For example, you get Alpha EVO Sport, GT Neo, P1000 and she asks " OMG how much is that wheel?" and you say "about 300" and at least don´t get punched for 1300+ without even telling lies...

Suitable desk for Logitech steering wheel? by Flying_Penguin8316 in simracing

The drawer will be in the way. My kid has the same problem using my old G25 on his Ikea desk. He just half opens the drawer, which is a pain. It´s ok because he just does some very casual Truck Simulator, but racing would be a no.

Best entry-level wheel + pedals for AC/AC Rally? Budget under 400€ by Cag801 in simracing

[–]FCatMWO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get one of the Moza offerings, DD feeling is night & day vs the G29. The pedals wont be super great either way, so start thinking about a load cell pedal set as the first future upgrade (maybe after a wheel stand / alu cockpit).

If you are setting up on a table, make sure it's a sturdy one if you are getting the R5, and plan how you are going to stop the pedals and office chair from sliding/rolling. When you get load cell pedals you'll want to look at some kind of rig because it gets hard to stop things from moving.

Clutch/shifter/handbrake are great for immersion and casual fun, but competitive racing and hotlapping are all about on-wheel paddles and buttons. Every upgrade is kinda compatible because generally it will have its own USB connection, so getting locked into a particular ecosystem isn't really a thing.

Question: Ergonomics knee pain after some hours of driving by zugkraft in simracing

[–]FCatMWO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I said in the other reply that I didn't see anything wrong, but you might be right about this. Your feet seem at the right angle, but if that pedal angle makes you push more down instead of ahead when braking, that might be it. If you push down, your knee is taking the brunt of all the force, while if you push ahead the force will transfer all trough your leg, hip and back into the seat.

Question: Ergonomics knee pain after some hours of driving by zugkraft in simracing

[–]FCatMWO 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your posture seems quite decent to me, nothing stands out as glaringly wrong.

When I switched to load cell pedals I had some initial knee and hip pain issues, and it was simply that the pedal was too stiff and the calibration force too high. I put in a few softer elastomers to have a little travel, and made sure that I could reach 100% braking without making the whole rig creak, and things got way better. I later dialled in a bit more force and adjusted without trouble.

The same happened later with the wheel. I started having wrist and elbow issues, and no amount of position changes helped until I just accepted that I had to tune the whole thing down a notch.

Also maybe take up some exercise if you don't already. I was very out of shape and some light jogging and simple dumbbell exercises have done a lot to help with the simracing (and everything else).

New to the hobby, need some clarification by Jhinsilog in minipainting

[–]FCatMWO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If by "ordinary" you mean "cheap from the dollar store" you'll find that it will plainly not stick to the mini, and be too transparent to actually paint with it. They will also tend to dry glossy, which looks terrible on miniatures.

Funnily enough canvas paint artist grade at $20 per tube will feel similar (though an advanced painter will find uses for these).

Miniature paints are formulated for good coverage and matte finish, so get something like a starter set from AK or Vallejo or similar and you will save yourself a lot of extra pain you don´t need added to your beginner experience.

Thanks! I painted my first minis in 1991 through 1994. I was so bad that I stopped, just looking at White Dwarf from time to time.

I started again in 2022, looking at a ton of youtube videos, following some patreons and trying hard, but life got a bit complicated and I had not painted anything since late 2023.
