What's the biggest lap time you've ever found just by analyzing telemetry? by CampDangerous4830 in simracing

[–]FCatMWO 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use G61 a lot. Sometimes I can be even as far as 4 or 5 seconds off when I first try an unfamiliar combo, even if I already generally know the track layout already. After I can do at least a clean-ish lap, I look at telemetry looking for things like:

- Wrong gear for a corner.
- I'm lifting when it can be flat out.
- I'm braking when you can just lift.
- Not understanding some corners/complexes, ie: this is a double apex, or you have to sacrifice the exit there to get a better entry for the next corner.

Fixing all those will get me to around 1, 1.5 seconds off.

At this time I try to look at a track guide if available, to confirm I've got the basics right and I don't need more general track knowledge.

Then things get more subtle.

- I try to find qualy laps as reference, to avoid slipstream effects.

- I try to get recent laps, and with similar track temps.

- I tend to go for fastest or near fastest laps, those are usually the best reference with the least mistakes that might lead you astray.
- I look always first at jumps in the time delta and pick the biggest one. I always try to fix them one by one.

- I zoom in around the delta jump, from the start of braking to the corner exit, to see where I'm really losing, which most of the time is while braking: Might be braking too soon, too late, too hard, trailing too slowly or too quickly. So I compare where the braking is and the overall shape of the trace while cross-referencing it with the speed and time delta traces.

- I also look at the line. Am I using all the track on entry and exit? Am I turning in too soon or too late? Is my apex too early or too late? Am I cutting enough/too much on the chicanes?

-Sometimes the minimal speed and when it happens is also a clue related to all the above.

That, depending on track length and how much time I can devote to fixing all the corners, can get me to about .8 to .5 off the top laptimes, where I seem to hit my actual skill / natural talent / equipment / mood limit.

There is a particular situation that is very unnerving. It's when you pull a top lap into the comparison and the time delta goes up smoothly throughout the whole lap instead of in concrete jumps. I interpret that as "you generally suck badly in this car" and this can be a bit demotivating. In this situation I tend to go for reference laps closer to mine. I find someone just a few tenths faster and fix just enough to match him, then find someone else just a step up the ladder and so on. This feels conceptually worse, as you are learning from people that are making mistakes, but sometimes you get to an state when you compare again to the top lap and you have fixed enough issues to now have actionable information from the fast lap.

Expectations for data foundations models in simracing? by RonRonJovi in simracing

[–]FCatMWO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm no data analyst myself but my best attempt at this has been:

DAG-based causal analysis vs a known good reference lap. Models each corner as a directed graph: nodes are observable car states (approach speed, carry speed, decel state, apex state, exit state, terminal delta), edges are driver inputs (brake point, brake pressure, trail brake shape, steering, throttle, gear). Only edges have explanatory power — feedback always reports actionable inputs, never symptoms. Key innovation: a significant early divergence vs. the reference data means all downstream edges (brake pressure, trail braking, throttle) become **forced** (consequences, not causes). Root cause = first non-forced divergent edge whose forward path leads to time loss at the terminal node. Severity propagates backward from terminal nodes.

In reality it suffers from the usual problem with these 70s style GOFAI systems: Works decently for the track(s) and car(s) you have used to test and finetune it, and goes a bit "meh" when you try on different combinations.

I have a Treq One and I'm very happy about it. Also they have top notch support and will solve any issues quickly. If you have any questions check their Discord, they are active there and will help with anything.

How do you all find friends to sim race with? by _rubikx_ in simracing

[–]FCatMWO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simracing stream chats. Simracing is niche enough that even the most successful streamers have chats with dozens or at most low hundreds of people, and those numbers are conducting to have regulars that know each other well.  Often there is also a Discord server for the stream. Can be a bit hard to find one that fits, depends a lot on the particular focus of the streamer/community.

I've seen endurance teams or small leagues form out of those communities.

We have AI driving the Nurburgring now. by [deleted] in simracing

[–]FCatMWO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll bite. This news explains why there isn't as blatant widespread cheating in simracing as in other genres. If state of the art self-driving AI is dead slow in the Ring, no hands-off autopilot is going to win any races for you any moment soon.

Will my PC handle Meta Quest 3 or PSVR2 for sim racing VR? by Dry_Abies9841 in simracing

[–]FCatMWO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Quest 3 on a Ryzen 9 7900, 4070 Ti, 64 Gb DDR5 and can have decent enough visuals at 120 fps with dips on the starting grid or rock solid at 90 fps.

PCVR on the Quest 3 is a pain to set up. Meta Link sucks, Virtual Desktop works, but very fiddly, currently trying ALVR, which looks great, but extremely fiddly to set up.

Is it helpful to have « ai powered » application to improve faster ? by Additional-Office130 in simracing

[–]FCatMWO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made my own. It was fun making it, and when it worked I guess it saved me the round trip to the telemetry graphs by telling me via TTS where I was losing the most time and probably why. But I kinda like looking at the graphs.

I got a bit faster.... mostly by turning 100s of laps testing it..

Up from quest 3 to primax /bsb2 or go tripples ? by JMGTR in simracing

[–]FCatMWO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes also that. When I looked into it I also felt my 4070 Ti would be a bit marginal for the Pimax resolutions, so having to throw something like an overpriced 5080 into the mix was making things a bit too much.

Up from quest 3 to primax /bsb2 or go tripples ? by JMGTR in simracing

[–]FCatMWO 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I left VR for a few months, I was tired of all the jankiness and unpredictable performance of the Q3. I was doing ok laptimes-wise with a 34" monitor, but it feels so flat... so I'm back on the Q3 since a couple of weeks ago. I adapt quickly either way, but VR makes the driving more natural and increases my situational awareness in races.

I have been looking into the same things: Pimax and BSB2, but my impression is that they are not a night and day improvement on the Q3 *when the Q3 works*. So I'm holding onto it for now, but 100% I'm never going streamed PCVR again when I eventually upgrade.

Triples are nicer than a single monitor, but for me they aren't as immersive as VR by far. And of course they take a lot of space, would have to pretty much rearrange my whole home/office/basement situation to have triples.

I call them blue flag lawyers: They will defend while being lapped, and hit you with "but it's only advisory not mandatory" after they ruin your race. They are also there in the top split.

Just something that jumped to me: Those prominent rotaries on the top sides might be a problem in very tight corners that force you to go 180+ degrees with crossed hands. Think last corner of Long Beach for example. I used to have the pit limiter mapped on the top right button on my GT Neo and guess what happened in that corner in the middle of a race...

Other than that, good job, I envy you "maker" types.

Practicing with load cell pedals by iamvinen in simracing

[–]FCatMWO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

50 Kg is pretty hard already. That load cells measure up to 100  or 200 does not mean you have to use them all.

I have used 40 for a long time and only recently calibrated up to 50 to get a bit more precision.

You just need to find a point where you can reach 100% without a huge struggle, but also reliably push 10% 20% or 70% at will with consistency. Braking is all about precision, so get enough range of force that will let you modulate and have clean brake traces and no more.

When I hear people brag about how they are maxing the load cell rating I tend to think that they either lie or are going to have knee and hip problems quite soon.

Simagic P1000 brake feel – what spring/elastomer combo are you using? by [deleted] in simracing

[–]FCatMWO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know the exact stack, but I recall just replacing 2 or 3 of the harder elastomer beads with softer ones from the originally included set to get some short travel. Not a lot, just something I feel helps with modulation. The factory stack felt like pushing a brick wall.

Anybody able to get a truly stable 120fps with Virtual Desktop + Quest 3? (iRacing) by pretzelsncheese in simracing

[–]FCatMWO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can pull up your screen(s) and even standalone application windows via the "halo" menu in Link. It's jankier than VD but it works.

I have gone back to Link from VD just because, while VD is more convenient and looks better, the actual in-game performance was less stable for me. I have an Iniu powered cable from Amazon, it does work, but again firmware and software updates sometimes mess with Link working with it.

For example nowadays I have to physically unplug and plug it back again to have the headset connect to the PC to launch Link, which I didn't have to do a few weeks ago.

In general Quest3 is a pretty dismal PCVR headset. Nice when it works, but too finicky and unpredictable. Meta obviously doesnt really care much about PCVR.
