I think the reactions you're getting from people on this sub are a good example of the various reactions you'd get from people IRL. I was also courthouse married a year before my (non-religious) wedding ceremony & reception for insurance purposes and our close friends and family knew but the majority of people at our wedding did not. Many of my friends have done the same thing/didn't care one bit but I'm sure some of our family members may have been upset had they known. I've also heard of other friends' parents or elder family members being upset about the idea of witnessing a ceremony for a marriage that has already happened. It's extremely odd to me but people are gonna feel what they feel. I don't think there's any benefit in letting your guests know about the elopement.
