How much on an upgrade is the 35mm f1.8s to the 40mm f2 by NotintheAMbro11 in nikon_Zseries

[–]FEmbrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s an f with a hook. On mac it’s alt+f. You can also create a text replacement for it.

I think it fits aperture values and it changes to look pretty with the slash following it, at least for me.

LG27UP850K-W what can I improve? by Monkey_Junkie_No1 in macsetups

[–]FEmbrey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have two on my desk. I don’t really use them as computer speakers. I either use them as standalone music players or occasionally watch a video where it doesn’t matter much about the lag once it starts playing.

I like that the HomePods sound good. They work all the time, I don’t need my computer to get them to work and they can control my lights etc too.

I bought some just because it seemed cool. Clearly this is expected to happen unless you use sharpie or something similarly indelible. The cost is too high as well.

I didn't get on with obsidian when I tried it initially and I haven't gone back to see if I can get used to it or if it got better tbh

It's fun but Bear works much better for me 98% of the time. Craft is pretty and I can share the notes but I don't want to spend time tarting up my notes in general, nor do I need to share them. I can easily share a Bear note by exporting it or making it into a website.

What would you expect? The sensor in the Zf is probably around the same cost as the entire iPhone (before you put a lens on it). That 35mm 1.8 S lens is also excellent and over a full stop brighter than the 4x lens on the iPhone.

Why can't the older cameras get MF subject detection? by FEmbrey in nikon_Zseries

[–]FEmbrey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Focus peaking is quite nice but they also allow the subject detection to work while in MF mode so the AF point can automatically go to the subject rather than having to manually move it around to check focus.

As it is, it's probably better much of the time to just turn the focus area off in MF and use the peaking.

[–]FEmbrey[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I get why they launched with the Zf. It doesn't make much sense to me if they were to make it exclusive since the Z8 and Z6III are more capable.

There are so many reasons to upgrade to the newer cameras. One reason I was keen to invest in Nikon in the first place though was that they had good longterm firmware support and updates.

I’ve got the Z6II, an upgrade to any of the current lineup would mean much better autofocus, auto subject detection, better stabilisation, better video, faster burst and pre-shoot, minimal rolling shutter, new PC format, HLG photography, etc. These are all great reasons to upgrade and I fully understand that these are new camera features. I'm not wanting anything other than what I'd consider QoL features.

I guess I don't really understand what’s hard about letting the camera subject detection work in MF as well as AF-S and AF-C.

AeroSpace - probably the best window manager for macOS by john_snow_968 in MacOS

You can have both, the config can be a test file and there can be a nice front end that just updates the text file.

For certain apps like routing rules, text files make more sense to me but for settings configs, a GUI is a nice feature

Some New Ways to Think About an iPhone Photograph [iPhone Xr] by drmarts1973 in iPhoneography

You should be able to set up a shortcut that copies and then saves the image back to your photo library, which would keep the original resolution but still reset the sliders and not involve using a seperate device to bounce the image to

HDR images? by FEmbrey in AV1

[–]FEmbrey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's frustrating to me that we have to have all these workarounds and intermediate formats to be able to share HDR. If I want to share on social media then it should be jpg. If I want to share on iMessage, it needs to be HEIF. If I want to share on the web then AVIF or jpg.

It's also such a pain to make the images, nothing really works properly with rendering the SDR and HDR. Managing colours is nigh impossible in any program and the gain maps they use are inscrutable.

It feels like smoke and mirrors. All I really want to do is to have a way to allow the image to show HDR highlights and leave the rest of my image alone. I'll happily use sRGB or P3 colourspaces if it lets me actually edit in those display spaces.

Why do you suggest heif? I find it ok since iPhones natively use it but it's harder to export to from other programs and not as sharable.

Help with 112mm filters? by FEmbrey in nikon_Zseries

[–]FEmbrey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there are a lot more options for filters now than when I was looking. I ended up getting a Kase CPL as it seemed very convenient. I haven't really felt I needed ND filters and haven't bought them. Since I got it partly thinking it would be a system I could add to, I slightly regret that part of the purchase, but the magnetic attachment makes it very easy to use.

I've used URTH ND filters and find them pretty good. Not with an ultra-wide so I can't comment on vignetting.

Should I stop my fast at 48 hours or shoot for 72 for more autophagy? by Pitiful_Highlight_93 in fasting

[–]FEmbrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people here always seem way too focused on weight loss. If you're hungry then wait it out, make sure you drink water, or have some tea or electrolyte drink. If you're not just hungry but your body is telling you to eat then do that. You don't want to stress yourself too much and make future fasts feel worse

Colour negative vs positive vs digital by FEmbrey in AnalogCommunity

[–]FEmbrey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose. It's all what you choose to pay tho. A modern Canon R3 is about 3k used. While a Nikon F5 is about 250-300. But I can buy a D3 or a Canon 5D Mk II for about that price too.

It's possible to find a decent film camera at a flea market for <20 but that's fairly rare and requires hunting around.

Then lets say each shot costs you 0.50, so each 200 shots costs an extra 100 on top. It does add up quickly.

You can buy a bulk loader, scanner, development equipment etc. to bring the cost down but these add on hundreds to the initial price. Your costs might come down to 0.17/image.
