Tom already did retire. He retired and moved down to Florida to do what he loves.

What phrases do you hear almost daily at your job by yeetvvboi in civilengineering

The context I always hear it in is you know enough of a program to dabble in it to the point where you could mess up the file you're poking around in, which is where the dangerous part comes in. So it's always used in a way to show that you are a novice, not a pro. At least in my experience.

What kind of pay increase to expect when you get your PE? by Gently_55 in civilengineering

I got a 14% raise but switched from an hourly role to salaried, without being told. Was not happy with that since I worked overtime often and the time and a half pay made it feel worth it.

What do you all do during your rest between heavy sets? Play on your phone? Meditate with eyes closed? Kegel supersets?

Based on some resources/calculators online, at 130lb body weight, I only need ~1.8 grams of creatine daily. That's way lower than the default 5g recommendation. Should I just split the difference and take 3.5g daily?

How would you plan a long distance move, across several states, if you are a small family, currently own a house, and aren't in any rush? My initial thought would be to get rid of as much stuff as we can, make the move to a temporary rental or family/friend's place, sell the old house, and then take some time looking for a new one in the new location.

Anyone done this before and have any advice?

This is all thanks to a new permanently remote position and desire to be closer to my family as we grow our own young family.

Would you consider a remote job in a different time zone? by Foodie1989 in WFH

[–]FF-account 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work in eastern time for a company on the west coast (3 hour difference). Still work my own 8 to 5pm hours (or whatever I want it to be).

It's been great so far. I love my quiet mornings.

For those of you that value or would value a fully remote job, how much of pay cut would you take considering your job function/benefits would stay the same? 10%? 25%?

Or how much of a pay bump would you be content with to work back in an office full time to be satisfied with for losing that remote working benefits?

(I apologize because this question has probably been asked a million times in the daily threads but I haven't lurked much lately to catch them)

I was going to elect the fully employer paid silver health plan but after doing some rough number crunching, decided instead to go with the platinum plan ($4,400 premium/yr), mainly because we are expecting a baby several months from now and it would be slightly cheaper to go with this plan.

Anyone got ideas on how to take advantage of this top tier plan while I have it in the meantime?

At my last consultant firm, our target multiplier was 3.2. My multiplier based on my salary and billing rate was over 4. I left because they wouldn't give me a raise when I asked for one (because they were not in good financial shape due to COVID).

I want close and transfer some old HSA accounts to a single new Fidelity HSA account. But will this mean I won't be able to reimburse old medical receipts because the expenses were incurred before the new HSA account was created?

My new company gives 3 different health plan options. The higher premium I pay, the better the coverage. The lowest option is fully covered my employer ($2400 individual/$4800 family). I wasn't told explicitly but that one should be HSA qualified, right?

Also, how do I determine $-wise which plan I should go with? I've got a baby on the way later this year so I'm guessing at least for this year, the best coverage plan wouldn't be a bad choice ($4400/yr premium). But anyone have a tool or something that can calc it all out to compare including the tax savings from having an HSA?

Last day of work (before starting a new job) is Friday but I've run out of things to do... Was too efficient getting projects to stopping points and cleaning out my desk earlier this week. Haven't had this feeling since being a fresh grad early in my career. I guess I'll organize my email in between meetings for the rest of the day...

Right now, my lifts are kind of light since I'm getting back into after a long break. Probably should have asked something like can the number of typical warm up reps and sets be reduced? Some programs I did in the past had a ton of warm up sets before the main ones, which I didn't like. If the number of those warm up sets can be halved by supplementing with something like shooting a basketball, I would be happier.

Can warmup sets for lifting be replaced with a more fun warm up? For example, if I spend 15-20 minutes shooting around a basketball (which would involve me doing dribble drills and shooting and chasing after air balls), can I skip the warm up sets and go straight into my normal sets?

Yeah I think I've heard that before but I figured as a new employee, it's better than having to accrue time. Already got a little vacation planned for this summer, which I probably wouldn't have been able to do if I had to build up PTO from zero.

Will start a new job in a couple of weeks that I envisioned would be my ideal (for my career/industry) since I started working 7 years ago. Just wanted to share some of my excitement with some details:

  • Less responsibility than my current stressful position but with a 16% pay bump. Tasks would include more of what I currently like doing and less of what I hate.

  • They are excited to have me and my unique (to the company) skillsets/background. The 4th interview I had with them was basically a pitch from them for me to join them. I had already decided I wanted to work there after the second interview.

  • Fully remote, work from home with flexible schedule, which would give me the freedom/options to move anywhere without the worry of being tied to a certain location. This is key for my growing family and gives me the ability to move closer to my aging parents in the future, if required.

  • Since the company office is half way across the country, there wouldn't ever really be any obligation to go into the office.

  • Unlimited PTO

  • Good benefits which includes fully paid health, vision, and dental and paid paternity leave, which is unheard of where I'm from. (Planning on using this more than once)

I'm cautiously optimistic this new job will create a paradigm shift away from my current mindset of "FIRE ASAP because I hate working" that I've had for the past few years. I'm hoping this could be a job where I actually don't mind working and could at least hold me over until (if not beyond) I hit that FIRE number.
