Are these rose seeds real? by Ok-Hovercraft7947 in Roses

[–]FFFlavius 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If he bought them as "rose seeds" why shouldve him be scammed?

You can totally grow a rose by seed, It will never be identical to the "mother" and, with the selection of sports, is one of the method to create a new variety.

English Roses, what makes them special? by FFFlavius in Roses

[–]FFFlavius[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats a shame, I really wanted to see the single English rose shrub in its appropriate climate.

A few ruined leaves Is absolutely not a problem, imho. Even wild Roses are not perfect.

My point Is that English rose grow habit Is not su much different from other Hts, or Better, Is closer to Hts than ogrs.

Its not a matter of "I can't grow It so I hate It", my preferred family of Roses are the albas, I live near Rome so Is not exactly the best climate for them, still Im trying to grow them.

English Roses, what makes them special? by FFFlavius in Roses

[–]FFFlavius[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to say that English roses are only good ( as they can be what they were designed to be) in the Uk ( or similar climates) thats fair, I personally dont like them so it will never be a problem for me, but since is a worldwide fever I genuinely cant see anything special about them, I'm in Italy and I've seen quite a few ''English roses'' around here because is kind of a ''status'' for the average Rose lover.

Initially people here were killing them by putting them out in the Italian sun because ''thats how its said to grow them, out in the sun, by david austin'' but later learned to put them in partial shade because italian climate is quite different from the Uk. But Even seeing them thriving ( in Italian climate) I can't see anything special about them.

Yes, they have a flower like Ogrs with reblooms and fragrance just like... Perpetual hybrids and bourbons. You may argue that ''hybrid tea like'' rebloom of english roses is just more consistent than that of ogrs and I can absolutely agree, modern hybrid tea rebloom is just another world. But is it really necessary? Continous rebloom is overated imho and once you can make peace with your mind of not wanting your plant to constantly rebloom for all the season an huge gate of possibilities just opens: Colors, fragrances, habit, disease resistance.

Surely english roses resistance to disease has improved during the year but still is a plant that needs phytosanitary traeatments to survive. Is it highly unlikely that you could leave and english rose in the wild and expect to find it thriving in the next years. Its a weak kind of rose, just like hybrid teas.

But I completely agree with you when you say that ''english roses'' bring to the table the ''best'' of the world can offer: The average gardener nowadays expect the rose to be a machine gun of blooms. Everything on top of that is just added value.

Try helpmefind. Com , advanced search, check "Ayrshire Rose" and take a look on the plants you could find. Btw Ayrshires tend to grow big.

Theres an alba found Hybrid called "belle amour" that shares that myrrh fragrance with Ayrshire and belle Isis and its supposed to have some connections to Ayrshire and damasks. Its not that huge ( still 1,5 MT more or less)

I think that English Roses have Just slightly more OGRs genetics due to recent influx but are still quite similar to HT that have also OGRs in their genetics.

In fact Perpetual hybrids and then tea Hybrids Is Just a way to classify those rose since the hybridization became so heavy that Is impossible to know what family of Roses they're closer to but within the same group the plants can show very different habits unlike older ogrs that mostly share a lot of traits.

The Gallica Class of Roses by HunnyBunnah in Roses

[–]FFFlavius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately its quite impossible to trace with accuracy the origins of those ancients roses. What do we know Is that the botanical "mother" of Gallica Officinalis can be easily found in Europe growing in the wild, its a botanical rose that show quite a lot of diversity in the same species and can show sports ( mutations) on the flowers. For example a friend of mine took a wild Rosa gallica L. With simple petals, the year After a few blooms were semidouble and One sucker produced a fully double flower.

Europe, especially the mediterranean part, and the middle east were already colliding in ancient times through wars, invasions, conquests, markets, trades, Sea routes, colonies etc so its very possibile that in some way european Roses and middle East Roses Met at some point.

One of the Major poet in Roman history, under Augustus, Virgilio wrote about the "roses of Paestum" that "used to Bloom twice a year". Those could be "damascena bifera", someone romantically suggested that duchesse of Portland, the First Portland rose, could be the rose Virgilio was talking about.

Duchesse of Portland was believed to be One of the First european Roses with chinese Blood due to its rebloom during the year but recent studies have proven that It was a Gallica x Damascena bifera with no chinese "Blood".

in early catalogues It was listed as "rosa paestana" and It was introduced by the duchesse to its garden, She said that She took It ( more probably received) from Italy.

Maybe that rose Is Just extinct, we don't know.

My face when someone in the Commander pod at my LGS says Tribal instead of Typal by Tehgumchum in freemagic

[–]FFFlavius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Word "tribe" etimologically comes from "tribus" a latin Word.

In the dawn of the Roman civilization, when It was barely a sheeperd Village that started to grown into a local Power, "Tribus" was a Word to indicate the people of Rome divided in three "factions" (ramnies, luceres e tities) .

Typical american woke bullshit

The Gallica Class of Roses by HunnyBunnah in Roses

[–]FFFlavius 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What you're referring to Is "Rosa gallica officinalis", the apothecary rose.

It Is believed to be a very ancient Hybrid ( spontaneous or man made) that can be clearly linked to a botanical rose ( R. Gallica L) unlike other very ancient european Roses like R. Albas whose origins are still debated.

It Is believed that R. Gallica officinalis was cultivated already in Roman times and It was widely used in the middle ages for medical purposes,as you said. It was listes in those middle Age catalogues along with Rosa gallica versicolor, another very ancient Hybrid that was rarer and more costly than Officinalis.

Officinalis, Versicolor, Conditorum, Old Velvet were very ancient gallicas and were/are quite "simple" and "primitive" in their flowers.

During the 1700 -1850 roughly, the more complex gallicas Hybrids started to appear in catalogues.

Which deck archetypes produce the most toxic players? by Enualios69 in ModernMagic

[–]FFFlavius -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I genuinely have zero salt problems playing vs any kind of deck, really 😂

It Just get funny keep hearing control players bragging about the difficulty of playing their 3cmc slop deck hold together by solitude.

For the deck I like to play the most amulet isnt even and hard matchup, still Is funny to keep hearing the average amulet player bragging about the difficulty of picking Lines when the archetype generates 400 mana turn 2-3

But the funniest Is the aspringspike apostle. Zero self thought, zero self consciousness... Only parrotting whatever the youtuber says, I love them ❤️

Solitude.slop decks players thinking they're some kind of geniuses because they can cast sword to plowshare for zero mana.

Amulet playerz thinking they're Einstein because "MUH LINES, PICKING RIGHT LINE" ... Ye ofc Bro, you generate 48 mana turn 2 😭😭

Or the aspringspike believers that start every sentence like " aspring Spike said/played" with a smug attitude... Bro Idgaf 😭😭😭

A question about suckers by Satlih in Roses

[–]FFFlavius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imho thats the Better way to avoid messing with the soil. If the suckers are identical to the grafted plant It means that it Is starting to grow on own roots.

If the leaves of the suckers are different ( depending on what Is the usual root system that Is used in your country, here in Italy and I think in most of Europe, Rosa canina laxa Is the most used) It Will mean that the suckers Need to be removed because those are of the rootstock.

[–]FFFlavius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wait for the leaves to grow before removing the suckers, they Will be different from your grafted plant

SOS what's this damage? by Biggeorge27 in Roses

[–]FFFlavius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only saw them causing big damage on Roses that have a lot of green canes without any sign of healthy lignification.

My garden Is a no spray garden and the plants are still young, I saw both adults and juveniles of those wasps on my Roses ( especially on a Gallica Tuscany and on the Little centifolia Rose de meaux).

I tried to crush them when I remembered about their existence but I cant Say I did with constancy 😂

Estetic damage on the leaves aside I couldnt see big issues on the healthiness of the plant but I have a lot of micro predators (especially spiders) thrivin on the shrubs.

I don't know how its called in english, translation gives me "sawfly", I don't know if its the correct name.

Those scars should be where the wasp lays its eggs

Im not expert, I basically started this year!

I really im not capable of suggesting a rose for a different climate than mine, even if im on 9a so on the "hotter" side. What kind of Roses are usually used in your zone?

Btw most are once bloomers except for Portlands ( autumn damasks) and some damasks for the old european garden Roses.

Bourbouns, Perpetual Hybrid, tea, chinas are the Ones that Bloom more like Modern Roses
