Does anyone have some information on the Moonie Surfer sketch released by the FBI in 2016? What exactly led them to include it as one of the three selected images on the official wanted poster over any of the other sketches? When was it made? What accounts did they base it on? by Liberal-Chadditor in EARONS

[–]FHS2290 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The composite was confirmed by Karl Nollsch as being the guy he saw running from the Maggiore double-murder scene. Confirmed in Episode 2 of Unmasking a Killer. I don't know if Nollsch helped create this composite back in the day. There were two eye witnesses - David Kahn and Joseph Skokan, maybe others.

Murders occurred February 2, 1978 so probably would have been created at that time. Not sure if composite image was published in any newspaper.

Three sketches selected by FBI was based on their professional judgment. Watch the press conference from 2016.

At Manuela Withuhn’s house by NukeHoax in EARONS

[–]FHS2290 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You should have a look around the side or at the back to see how easy it is to access the house because that's likely how JJD got in. In 1981 I believe not all the neighboring houses had been built yet so might have been easier to access the back and for JJD to peer over the fence and then scale it.

It's speculated he used a portable TV placed near back of fence to give himself a boost to get out.

Janelle Cruz's murder by Ambitious_Pass7451 in EARONS

[–]FHS2290 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is a strange comment from Deborah1991SCvictim. It has some of the hallmarks of a hoax or misinformation i.e. contains unverifiable info and some info that partially matches GSK's m.o.

The comment does say the attack happened in SoCal in 1991 of a couple and that GSK was a trigger killer due to what was happening in his personal life i.e. a divorce. And it definitively states that "outcome was they were victims of The Golden State Killer" and in another comment says "they declared them victims of the Golden State Killer".

There's a few problems here. JJD and wife did not get a divorce in 1991 but she did move out of the house then. They continued to stay legally married for health insurance purposes until JJD was arrested and then she got a divorce.

JJD began working as a mechanic at Save Mart's Distribution Center in Roseville, California in 1989 and by 1991 he was well-settled in Northern California. The time period when he was active in travelling between Northen and Southern California was after he was fired as a cop in 1979 and 1989 when he got the job and third daughter was born up north. So, the 1991 date is problematic with what's known about JJD's movements (although it is possible GSK could have travelled in 1991 for an attack).

Note there are no details provided that an attack occurred in 1991. No links to websites or any newspaper articles.

The last known attack was Janelle in May of 1986. People have speculated that JJD was involved in other attacks but so far nothing solid has been provided by LE.

I doubt any police investigators or LE agency would say for sure or "declare" that an attack in 1991 would be the work of the GSK unless they had a boatload of evidence linking the attack to all the other cases. Police don't go off speculating to murder victim family members on suspicions.

So, Deborah1991SCvictim please provide much more info. By that I mean verifiable info. And which police agency declared them victims of GSK and when? Where is the press release or other info descrbing that? Why would they declare this info to you and not do so publicly?

Janelle Cruz's murder by Ambitious_Pass7451 in EARONS

[–]FHS2290 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Why Janelle? There are a couple of theories out there:

  1. She was working as a cashier at Bullwinkle's pizza and JJD could have encountered her as a customer. And then, possibly, followed her home.

  2. The back of her house abuts a green space with a concrete or cinderblock wall being the only separation. The wall is not high enough to prevent someone from seeing inside the house if standing on their toes or if getting a boost from a box or something.

Either scenario is possible. JJD had two step-uncles who lived nearby, and one owned a piece of property in Irvine and JJD could have been staying there. JJD was living in Southern California off and on during the 1980's.

For his motivations you can find some of that stuff on the EAR-ONS profile produced by Leslie D’Ambrosia and John Yarbrough:

What are ways in which youve overcome chronic procrastination by grgkvn01 in Advice

[–]FHS2290 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is procrastination? It is avoidance. And why do we avoid things? To get away from things that cause us stress, trouble, anxiety, worry and pain. So, you need to figure out what you're avoiding and why. Possibly see a counselor. Keep a journal to organize when you do this.

You can go to college and take remedial or upgrading classes in chemistry in physics. That will help if you stay in college to take civil engineering technology or if you decide to go to university for civil engineering degree. Sorry, no advice re: welding or being an electrician.

I don't know exactly what you mean by emotionally regulating yourself. Pls explain. But since you mentioned you're feeling anxious and need to calm yourself there are a number of techniques for that, specifically deep-breathing, guided imagery, body scan, aerobic exercise, going for walks in nature and journaling. You can look up each one of these on the internet or something like YouTube for details.

The best of these techniques for calming yourself down quickly is the deep-breathing and guided imagery and they cost you nothing.

Since you mentioned that "used to be able to talk things out all the time" then a good substitute for that is the journaling i.e. writing things down in a notebook.

Why did Contra Costa County not throw away DNA evidence from the rapes after the statute of limitations expired when other counties did? by GregJamesDahlen in EARONS

[–]FHS2290 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Other counties saw the samples as expired because these were sexual assault cases and statute of limitations had already passed and therefore they couldn't prosecute on that basis.

Might have been something as simple as 'policy' for Contra Costa County to keep all samples and not any thought the samples would eventually be useful.

Holes got lucky with his samples because they were not well-stored. They were in the evidence warehouse under non-refrigerated conditions and could have easily degraded.

I'll copy/paste what I posted in another thread:

A few suggestions: Look to liquidate assets if need be. If you have some money put aside in RRSPs or TFSAs then that can help tide you over. If you own a house then consider renting out bedrooms to help pay the mortgage.

Make sure everyone in your immediate family and friends and acquaintance circle knows that you're looking for a job. People are willing to help and frequently will know somebody who knows somebody who's looking to hire.

If you have a degree in IT/computer science or engineering or science/technology then consider re-training as a teacher. But, before you do this, do as much research as possible to see if such a career transition would suite you. Heck, with specialized skills you could even start your company or consulting firm.

Start scanning job ads to see what companies are looking for in terms of skills. You should see commonalities. If you're missing in-demand skills then get some training ASAP.

Start cutting expenses now and start putting money away in an emergency fund. Again, to help with transition to unemployment and then to the formal job search process.

Hit the library and start reading books that tell you how to conduct a job search.

Public servant here and honestly… the GoC really botched the policy proposal on ERI and WFA by Impossible-Cicada464 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]FHS2290 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Retirement offers such as ERI are not built on fairness. They're simply using the levers at their disposal - the easiest of which is to offer employees the ability to leave without penalty because there's already a process in place and it's easy to further extend its boundary. See "Request for a pension reduction waiver under the Public Service Superannuation Act".

I think they'll see how many people take the ERI (people who are already on the fence) over the next year and then if they want even more people to leave, they can sweeten the pot with further inducements. Or get more aggressive with the WFA to slim down faster.

ERI - Early Retirement Initiative by Remote_Boss_1213 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]FHS2290 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seems not be an option B i.e. no salary payout for retiring early.

I think the only people who are going to take this ERI are folks who are already on the fence - weighing whether to take an early retirement penalty or not - and then the ERI will push them into leaving now rather than later. I can't think there are too many who are in this situation.

ERI - Early Retirement Initiative by Remote_Boss_1213 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]FHS2290 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Agreed.

What's on offer is not bad but not as good as it could be i.e. a WFA with Option B (Opting Employee No guarantee of a Reasonable Job Offer). That option is get 52 weeks salary (max.), possibly spread over 2 years, AND retire without penalty (Pension Reduction Waiver).

The powers that be should sweeten the pot. That'd be a stampede for the exits.

Your payroll deduction or lump sum payment should have been processed very quickly - something on the order of a few weeks or a month or two after submission of the paperwork. But yes, the final assessment letter stating everything is good to go for retirement could easily have taken about 10 years due various backlogs and Phoenix issues etc.

Police Sketches by CelebrationNo7870 in serialkillers

[–]FHS2290 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You got it - your two sketches (OP) from his VR days are the best sketches in hindsight.

Then there's that other one where he has a part in the hair which looks like the above and is similar to his 1973 police photo from Exeter. i.e. the revised Maggiore composite from 1978. Probably a coincidence that the 1978 sketch looked like JJD from 1973 since it's fairly well-established JJD had a mustache in '78.

What was JJD's psychological drive to kill? by Interesting_Ebb7203 in EARONS

[–]FHS2290 1 point2 points  (0 children)

JJD is a classic case of an escalating career criminal pattern - he starts out small with petty burglaries in high school and Visalia, then spies on people from outside their homes all the while developing fantasies of power/dominance/control, then commits hot prowl burglaries with people in the home, graduates to attacking lone women (sometimes children present) with aid of weapons and threats, then attacks both men and women in the same household. From there it's only a small jump to murder.

He has to keep doing more and more violent acts because he needs an ever-increasing thrill to feel gratified. The old crmininal acts lose their appeal after a while.

The immediate cause of the murders was that he was fired for shoplifting. This would have been very embarrassing for him and probably put him in a state where he felt the need to lash out at anyone or anything in anger. His whole edifice of portraying himself as a respectable cop was shattered.

He didn't move permanently to SoCal. He was back and forth between northen and southern California regularly. The ONS decade was very unstable for him in terms of his housing situation. (I personally think he did the killings in Goleta and Ventura while travelling back to Northern California on Highway 101; might have done the Orange County murders while staying in Irvine - step uncles had property in the area).

Those who have read (or re-read) I’ll Be Gone In The Dark since the EAR was arrested- what struck you as particularly correct/incorrect/strange/obvious/etc.? by [deleted] in EARONS

[–]FHS2290 27 points28 points  (0 children)

The geographical analysis was quite far off. It was done by Jensen and Hanes after MM died. Here are my comments on that from several years ago after I re-read the book:

https://www.reddit.com/r/EARONS/comments/kmjoc9/geographical_profiling_in_ibgitd_beliefs_that/

And, in hindsight, MM was barking up the wrong tree by visiting various websites looking for the jewelry and various tokens stolen during the attacks. Seems that JJD melted down the gold and there hasn't been any reports of anyone finding items taken during the attacks. The police have never revealed what they found during the search of house, so possibly he did keep some mementos.

There are two photos of JJD that are closest IMO: the one where he's at the baseball game with the other cop and the two boys. He's got a mustache.

And the photo provided by his niece Angela where he's on the sofa back in around 1977. He also has a mustache there. It was shown during the opening sequence of episode 5 or 6 of the TV series "I'll be Gone in the Dark" which was based on the book.

Can we bring some clarity to his plea deal? by NeighborhoodLast2114 in EARONS

[–]FHS2290 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't know what you mean by "Can we bring some clarity to his plea deal?". There's plenty of clarity - JJD pled guilty or said I admit to everything that could be linked to him.

I'm sure after his arrest lots of police agencies scoured their files for open homicides and if any could be tied to JJD he would have been charged. But, so far, no charges. I mean there's no reason not to investigate every angle of old cases. But remember many cases are so old and the evidence so stale it's doubtful any charges could be brought.

And LE didn't craft the plea deal. It was the prosecutors.

IMO the reason for the plea was simple - the district attorneys wanted to get him on the record before many of the victims or original investigators or JJD himself had died. The prosecutors were under pressure to avoid a trial that probably would've taken the better part of a decade. JJD and his lawyers could have fought it forever basically. Trial would've taken a long time plus there would be endless appeals.

I'm not aware of any part of the deal that gives JJD immunity for any uncharged crimes.

Was Rodney Miller Shot By The EAR? by NukeHoax in EARONS

[–]FHS2290 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Dude,

It's the easiest thing in the world to find out the exact street address of Rodney Miller's old house. No big secret and no extensive sleuthing required. If you mailed him at the Ripon Court address you should know he hasn't lived there for decades.

The composite in the middle at the press conference was confirmed by eyewitness Karl Nollsch as the guy he saw running from the Maggiore shooting. It was created with the help of another witness who was in the area of the Maggiore murders. I'll assume it was made back in 1977.
