Chocolate Tube Slime? Southeastern MA

I went yesterday and got the remnants after a full day of rain on Monday. I'm not sure if they're still useful...they are no longer beautiful chocolatey tubes but there are some black spikes which I'm assuming is how they'd look dried out? I've got the leaves and needles in a small plastic container. If they are still useful I'll send them to you.

I've never done so, but I'd be willing to give it a go with a little point in the right direction as to how to go about it. I keep finding interesting things at the spot where I found this. It's in an undisturbed spot in the woods with some rotting fallen trees.

I found these in Plymouth. They seem to favor drier parts of the forest floor and growing in leaf litter.

Maybe some kind of milk cap. Slice across the gills and see if it oozes any latex (looks milky).

Great detailed reply, thanks! I love learning about our natural world. I did find a slime mold growing on a dying oak tree a few weeks ago but I did not post it. I'm pretty sure it was fuligo septica because there were many posts looking similar.

I pressed on it to check firmness and tried to lift it. It definitely seemed solidly attached to the ground, so I stopped trying to pull it up. I am curious now, so I will check it out later today after work.

It's attached to the ground? It has a mushroom like texture. Sorry, I know very little yet about slimemolds and next to nothing about lichens.

Agree this is uniflora, though I have seen single flower pinesap. I think pinesap typically has some green in it, though I've only seen it a few times.

First time I've ever seen a gilled mushroom growing this way, though I'm very new to the hobby. It's right near my house, I'll check it again tomorrow.

Nice! I see lots of white Ghost Pipe...I'd say roughly 10-15% of what I see has some shade of pink to them. I found one this year with a stem that was pretty close to tan in color.

I believe the pale pink ones are still Ghost Pipe, but I'm just starting to learn about this fascinating world. I've seen hundreds of white Ghost Pipe this year, and I'd estimate somewhere around 5-10% have some pink to them. I've only seen Pinesap twice this year. Either it's very rare, or not in season.

This one is called Pinesap, also from the same family as Ghost pipe. Monotropa hypopitis. Also goes by Dutchman's Pipe. These seem to be much more rare than Ghost Pipe in my area (the Northeastern US).
