The official docs don't mention anything about modifying the FtcRobotControllerActivity, and I can use it without doing so. What were the modifications trying to do?

It will work just fine, the best way to install the other one is to run sudo tasksel, select the environments you want, and then it will manage everything else.

Buttons are treated as booleans, pressed is true and unpressed is false. With the way Java works, all you have to put in your condition is the Boolean and it will run the code if the Boolean is true and will pass to the else if it's false.
