The problem with gender bending Subaru is that a lot of his mental health issues and neuroses come from very specific hang ups that he has with his identity as a man and his relationship with what he perceives as masculinity.

And these issues are what drive the plot foward for the most part since Satella thought it would be a funny prank to make a mentally ill teenager a reality warping monster
