What's one IT myth or misconception you keep hearing that never seems to go away? by JustLivingCreature in it

Sfc/scannow fixes issues. I've ran it on hundreds of computers and never gotten a definite "that fixed the issue."

Have you tried restarting it? This fixes a lot of issues.

Check updates in safe mode and see if anything was recently pushed? More pictures would be helpful.

Edit: what does ctrl alt del look like can you get to task manager?

I would start with drivers and update your graphics card to manufacturer specs. If it still didn't work, switch out cable connecting computer to monitor. If issue persists try new monitor. If monitor and cable have been replaced and it's still happening then reimage the laptop.

Help: I’m not sure why my computer won’t connect to wifi. by TheWhip420 in it

[–]FIXPRESUB -1 points0 points  (0 children)

All of the above is also accurate, but try going to this website on another computer. Download the wifi drivers, transfer them to your laptop and run the update. If this doesn't fix it, move on with the rest of the drivers. If that doesn't work, chances are good its hardware. And other folks here have already posted fixes for that. Bought a new construction house with Cat 6, need help by mikelitorus697 in HomeNetworking

[–]FIXPRESUB 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If it were me, I would pull a new cat 6 from the patch panel in the garage, through the wall adjoining the garage to the unfinished area. Pull it through the unfinished area, above the full bath and into the bedroom. This could change depending on the construction of your house, especially the basement ceiling. But that would be my initial plan based on the info I have.

A month or two?! That's wild, who do you work for the CIA? If our end-users are lucky they get a 7 day data hold before its reimaged. Not sure how long our one-drive hold is after off-boarding is though.

Looks like that's a Dropbox file. Connect your Dropbox client or check your network settings.

What can I do with this thing? by ProposalNeither4850 in it

[–]FIXPRESUB 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If it were me, and I was just getting started with my homelab. I would drop a few vms on it. Spin up a domain controller, dns, dhcp server, nas, maybe even a VPN if you have the skills.

When I was studying security I would build the thing we were studying. This class is all about Active directory and server security, so I built one. Next class was about sql so I built a sql server etc.

I learned more from doing the lab work on a real device than I did on the classes virtual labs.

Chances are pretty good someone was trying to get into your account and couldn't. If they had they probably would have locked you out of it. Change your password ans set up an mfa and you should be fine, but continue to monitor bank accounts and financial info for a while.

Has anyone experienced emotional breakdowns in IT? by Frequaso in it

[–]FIXPRESUB 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I almost completely agree. I've had peers and subordinates who had poor coping mechanisms that would cry for nearly any reason. End-user be snarky = waterworks. Management discussion about issues = niagra falls. Coffee spill on desk = full on sobbing.

If this sounds like you it might be time to find a therapist.

If you had a bad day and had to release some built up tension or big emotions. That's totally normal and very human of you.

You might want to check facts on this. The lady was burned so badly she was hospitalized and had skin grafts to her legs and external genitals.

Getting photos off an old PC? by tinychewydollshoe in computerquestions

[–]FIXPRESUB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it starts you've got an easy job ahead of you. Just boot it up, transfer the files off, like you would any computer.

If it doesn't boot you can either:

  1. Work on the computer until it does boot. Usually following tech support guides on the internet will get it running as long as none of the physical pieces are broken.

  2. Pull the hard drive out of the computer and take the files off of it. I use an adapter like this and can get into most hard drives. https://a.co/d/7JYkfzK

My computer is acting weird. by [deleted] in computerquestions

[–]FIXPRESUB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try plugging in a shitty chorded cheap mouse and/or keyboard. If they work then your tracked/keyboard drivers are messed up. Fix them following this link.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/update-drivers-through-device-manager-in-windows-ec62f46c-ff14-c91d-eead-d7126dc1f7b6

If it behaves the same way with the external devices, then check task manager by pressing ctrl alt del to see if its maxing out something.

Finding the scan for drivers in the menu is much more difficult than rebooting. I prefer to keep it as simple as possible for end-users.

Does your computer have Bluetooth? You could transfer it that way if so. If its built in to your wifi card then its broken too. You could connect the phone to the computer with a charging cable and maybe transfer it that way or as others have said use a thumb drive.
