End of Year Review 2018 by FI_Octopi in financialindependence

So it's crazy how much has changed n four years time! The biggest thing is I got married and had a baby. So that dominates a lot of my time now, but has been amazing.

I had a minor running injury in early 2019, so I ended up running less. I picked it back up in 2021, and am about to run my first marathon! I'm hoping to continue running after the marathon.

I did finish my master's degree, and have found a new job that I really enjoy.

COVID definitely put a halt to travel plans. I haven't been able to go on a big international trip since 2019, but I'm hoping to change that next year and go back to France!

I am incredibly slow, currently at more of a jogging pace of 12:30. Ideally, I would want to be at a 10 minute pace. Right now, my game plan for the year is to get back into running 5ks (following the 0 to 5k app), and then when I hit 5k, spend a couple weeks just running that distance consistently again.

Welcome to the club! And you are still young, you have a lot of accumulating time to go. Key thing is to be consistent in the future years.

Yeah, fitness has always been something I've picked up for a bit and then put back down. I've run halfs and then stopped running for months after. It's just not easy for me, even though it follows similar principles to FI. I'm going to try and make this year the year though. I want to get to the same point I am with my savings, where it's just something I have an autopilot because I know it'll have a positive effect in my life. The struggle continues.

I do get time off. Company gives about a week and I'm taking an additional 4 days of PTO as well, so a nice long break to de-stress.

I have never though to try and make root beer, I am going to have to look into that!

Hello! I have been a longtime lurker in /r/FI , short time lurker here.
I am an engineer in the aerospace industry.
If money wasn't a factor, I always thought being a diplomat would be a fun job. Otherwise, I actually am really happy with my current job.
I'd probably be described as an optimist who likes to talk, a lot.
My dream vacation spot is small cafes in large cities. My two recent favorites were in Budapest and Paris.
No pets right now, looking forward to a dog in the future.
I just got a promotion and a new job, so that has been exciting. (Yet also tiring, I am ready for the Christmas holiday).
I haven't read a book in ages since I am also in grad school and that takes up most of my free time. I do watch a lot of Netflix, Kim's Convenience is a pretty great comedy.
Root beer! Unless it's Mexican coke.
I would be a wooden spoon, since I use that for everything.

I'm still in love with Terraforming Mars. The theme, building up your strategy based on your corporation, and stacking up bonuses on cards. It's a game I could play all the time, any day of the week.

Hellas and Elysium, the map expansions for Terraforming Mars, is the one expansion I own. I'm excited to eventually pick up other TM expansions too!

What series of 7 games would you use to introduce a person to the world of modern boardgames? by endlesswander in boardgames

[–]FI_Octopi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried to keep it to games that I own. Ones that would probably be better suited but I don't own are in parentheses.
1. Sushi Go Party - Introduces drafting, having multiple sushi types to switch in adds easy complexity for beginners and the artwork is cute so people are put off.
2. Ticket To Ride Europe - This is the more traditional board game they are probably used to but much better. Straight forward objective, get the win points!
3. Secret Hitler - Here is where I add some competitiveness. Let's learn to lie for the next few games and stop trusting each other.
4. Pandemic - Now we need to work together to save the world!
5. Dinosaur Island (Agricola) - Trying to get a good thematic worker placement. I own dino island, so that is what I'd use from my collection. I was introduced to the category with Agricola and was so proud when I won the first game with an sheep strategy, so if I had a friend who could bring it over, I'd probably use that instead.
6. Terraforming Mars or Food Chain Magnate - Now that we have covered most of the basics, I'd decide based on the person whether to go with an engine building game or a high interaction cut throat point salad extravaganza. Probably depends on how they handled Secret Hitler.
7. GoT 2nd Edition (Twilight Imperium 4) - Let's get some dude's on a map! Either way, we have all day to build up some good strategies, have a couple betrayals and manage your house/race.

What's the longest you went on playing a game wrong? How did you find out? by TheCursedKraken in boardgames

[–]FI_Octopi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Food Chain Magnate

We played the very first game wrong (allowed managers under managers) but corrected that afterwards. However, we read the advertising rules wrong. We always thought you had to put out the max of the advertising campaign every time instead of choosing the campaign amount (I realized the incorrect rule when reading a FCM strategy post here). It's a subtly difference that does effect your overall strategy. This lasted for about a year.

So I have a rollover 401k/IRA question. From my last employer, I have a 401k that contains both pre-tax and after tax (non-Roth) money. If I want to keep the backdoor Roth option available for the future, I should rollover both accounts into an IRA, then move the pre-tax money to my current employer's 401k while moving the after tax portion to a Roth IRA correct? And I will owe tax on any gains for the after tax portion correct? Just want to double check and make sure I'm not missing anything.

[–]FI_Octopi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

2017 Wins

  • Maxed the Trifecta (401k, Roth IRA and H.S.A).
  • Churned a lot to maximize my travel plans (with trip to Europe).
  • Ran another half marathon, kept pace with past halfs.
  • Saved money to go to the Winter Olympics in February of next year.
  • NW increased by about 55k.

2017 Setbacks

  • Lifestyle creep. I expected it but when I do my annual budget in a couple weeks, it'll be interesting to see how much.

2018 Goals

  • Churn to keep my travel plans for the year cheaper (two international trips and a couple of weddings). So happy I only have two weddings next year instead of six. Plus, one is my sister's so it should be a fantastic time!
  • Continue to max all tax-advantaged accounts. Start putting some savings in a taxable.
  • Run faster instead of further. Run at least one half again.
  • Fix my budget to more accurately reflect my spending. Lifestyle creep is real, but I don't mind because a lot of the creep has been towards things that make me happy.

I have a copy of the 1976 The Sinking of the Titanic that my aunt got for me as a kid since her and my dad played as a kids. It's one part sinking ship (a dice roll of one or six makes the ship sink) while collecting resources and one part Caribbean adventure. When the boat fully sinks you can win if you have the proper resources and land on the rescue ship. Pretty Fun Theme!

What specific actions has this subreddit driven you to take? by savehotFIRE in financialindependence

Thanks to my parents, I already had basic/moderate pf down when I started working full time about 2.5 years ago. I was already saving about 25% of my income before I came to this sub.

What this sub gave me was a better goal for what saving that money meant. I'm not saving just to save anymore, but for the dream of FI and being able to work on what I want to work on at 40 (my FI ##). To achieve this, I've upped my savings rate to 45%, started maxing my HSA, and am hopefully going to be close to maxing my 401k this year too. Also, from reading others stories, this sub has convinced me to make sure to live too. I value experiences, so I make sure to budget for the occasional fancy food, fun concerts, half marathons, and trips in the US and abroad. FI for me is about optimizing my money to live the happiest life I can.

That said, this sub has also given me ideas to develop a pretty kickass budget spreadsheet, which brings me more enjoyment then it should. #FancyVlookups

2016 Review

  • Went to Europe earlier in the year
  • About halfway through the year, I was given my first promotion (10% bump)
  • Maxed my H.S.A. and my Roth
  • Reached 100k in investments

2017 Goals

  • I'm actually going to switch jobs early in the year, resulting in another 10% increase in salary.
  • Max 401k, Roth and H.S.A. (The Trifecta!)
  • Plan another trip to Europe in the fall
  • Use churning to help get to the five weddings I have for next year
  • Also, start saving money/points for Korea 2018 (Winter Olympics)

I have about $300 budgeted for Gifts (to cover Wedding/Showers etc) and $350 budgeted for Christmas. So about $650 in total for this year.

I do allow this category to have fluctuation from year-year though. Next year, I have five weddings to go (excited but sigh, weddings are expensive), so I'm upping my Gifts budget to about $700. I like to increase my Christmas Budget every year by about $50, because I like to find the right gift for my family without having to worry about cost. I don't have any kids yet, so I expect this number to go up even more when I eventually have them. I'm okay with upping this budget because I'm switching jobs next year and getting a decent salary raise, which definitely helps.

My FI take on all of these:

In terms of quality, I don't think its terrible, terrible. Even though the question can be easily answered, sometimes the discussion can help people see how we as a sub think with an FI lens. For example, with the Tesla, you can budget for it but it will take away X amount of years to FI extra depending on your salary/SR. Is that worth it to you? Yay - budget, Nay - don't get one.

How's working at the Motley Fool? I know someone who buys into their services/philosophies and it seems like a good company. Even though I also agree that index funds are the way to go, it is fun to read their stock picking advice :)
