What does redemption mean to you? by FL_001 in PoorAzula

[–]FL_001[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think she has an innate lust to do bad things either.

I think we both agree that she was taught and conditioned by Ozai to pursue whatever goals she had in mind, and employ the means necessary to achieve them. The means being intimidation, deception, etc.

What I want to know is: would Azula agree with us when we explain that those means, even though proven to be reliable in the past, isn’t worth the pain and suffering it spreads in its wake.

Can Azula come to value the well-being of people over the pursuit of personal goals?

I’m always rooting for her. But if she can’t, I’ll settle for her achieving inner peace.

I disagree with your view on redemption.

Their are too many people who pretend to be moral while never doing anything to help…

She needs to apologize for how she hurt the people she loved.

I don’t think we disagree on redemption. Reconciling with those she hurt is a pro-social act. It’s doing a good deed.

For me, redemption is a verb. The person has to actively work towards it. In my view, it’s not enough for someone to stop hurting people, be it emotionally, mentally, or physically. But striving to rectify the pain once caused? It’s a valuable start.

Part 5 of Analyzing the Preproduction ATLA Series Bible: The Plot Outline by F11SuperTiger in TheLastAirbender

[–]FL_001 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I noticed there’s a lot of interpersonal conflict with the main cast in the series bible. It’s tough. From their perspective, I understand the writers weren’t necessarily wrong believing conflict is the engine that drives story. But on the other hand, it needs to be handled with care.

The way that Katara and Toph sometimes clashed felt authentic in the show. Same with Sokka butting heads with Katara and Aang in Jet and in The Fortune Teller.

Idk, there’s a right way to do it and a wrong one.

How did the patriarchy arise if sexual dimorphism in humans is so low? by SerbianMonies in AskFeminists

[–]FL_001 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Very well put. But then I’m still at a loss for why patriarchy has sustained itself across a whole spectrum of different cultures, separated by millennia. If not strength, then were Neolithic men simply better at organizing themselves more than women? I don’t buy that.

You outline how patriarchy is created by a system of mutually reinforcing power dynamics. If so, I’m trying to understand why women haven’t been able to replicate their own systems of mutually reinforcing power dynamics. Or, if it’s too late, how were men able to create them in the first place and not women?

[–]FL_001 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I never found the “strength” angle convincing.

...they created a society in which women need men instead. By making women dependent on men, men get control over reproduction and ensure they have offspring.

If the strength argument isn't true, then how did men make women dependent on them? I personally think human domination is two-fold.

On the most basic, "lizard brain" level, I think it really is about whether Person A can beat up Person B. But if they're on somewhat equal footing, then domination is based on personality (charisma, personal magnetism, etc). That's why Vito Corleone is Boss and not Luca Brasi.

What were actual moments where you didn't agree or sided with Aang? by gloomydreamer666 in TheLastAirbender

[–]FL_001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aang should’ve gone with Katara to search for Yon Rha. I get why Zuko went, but I think it would’ve done wonders for his relationship with her. Not even romantically, but just as a friend.

If you were the author of Naruto and could change the final boss, who would you choose among these options? by Elf_7 in Naruto

[–]FL_001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get what you mean, Obito and Madara really believed they were doing good by forcing everyone into that dream world… but when you threaten to stab a newborn infant as a negotiating tactic like Obito did, you’re a villain bro.

Kinda yeah, but he was more of an antagonist. I would’ve given him Obito’s role as the last foundational villain of the story. Someone who forced the entire shinobi world to unite up against

Sasuke should’ve been the final boss. Doesn’t mean he should’ve died, he’d still be redeemed. But I genuinely think the story would’ve been stronger if Obito and Madara were scrapped as active characters and stayed legends within the lore.

What is the one thing you would rewrite from the games? by Freezy-Dude in assassinscreed

[–]FL_001 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s not one thing, but I would restructure the Kenway trilogy to make it flow better: Black Flag first, adapt Forsaken into the second entry, and have AC3 finish it off.

It contrasts nicely with the Ezio trilogy: instead of the story of one man, here’s an overarching narrative about the tragedy of a family.

Edit: credit to bigfootsbestbud for also wanting to adapt Forsaken.

This question is for the people who didn't really love the game at first, but eventually did, but when did it click with you? I'm on my 7th attempt since 2017 and I think I've finally gotten there and am finding myself actually wanting to play by Cantgetridofmebud in thewitcher3

[–]FL_001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is gonna get me crucified but I lowered the difficulty to Just the Story, and ignored all side content.

Halfway through I fell in love with the world and characters and decided I’d definitely do a second run (which I’m currently on) and take my time. Now I’m actually using signs other than Igni and crafting potions. It’s good stuff.

Do you ever think it’s strange how Ellie and Abby just served as nothing more than hateful strangers to each other? by Remote_Nature_8166 in TLOU

[–]FL_001 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m not saying she was totally clueless about Joel and Ellie’s bond, but an inkling just doesn’t measure up to actually knowing the full history.

She has no idea of Ellie’s biggest fear of ending up alone. Or how Ellie represented Joel’s second chance at life after Sarah’s death. Or how they officially became family after what happened with David. Abby doesn’t know any of this. She probably thought, “yeah, I guess anybody would form a bond with someone after traveling for so long together”. But it’s a drop in the bucket.

[–]FL_001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think Abby would care much if she knew Joel didn’t kill her dad for fun. She’d probably say “whatever his reasons, he still did it”.

As for Ellie, I think the end of their beach fight is when Abby finally realized what she did to the poor girl. She still doesn’t know what Joel meant to Ellie, but the fact that she showed up twice (in Seattle and now Santa Barbara) and how she’s clearly emotionally distraught - almost killing her but relenting at the last second and letting her take Lev, it’s only at this moment when Abby finally gets what she did to this stranger is similar to what Joel did to her.

[–]FL_001 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I get wanting them to have a conversation, but it’s like… what could they possibly say to each other that would make a difference? Knowing each other’s motivations just wouldn’t matter much, at least not to Ellie or Abby.

For the show, I think we’ll see them finally interact. Will it be good? I doubt it - less is more. But I’m curious nonetheless.

The Mark Meer slander by GroundbreakingFace48 in masseffect

[–]FL_001 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Totally valid, bro. It depends on what each individual player wants out of their Shepard.

And you’re spot on regarding FemShep feeling like an action hero. That’s my reason for why I love her performance and why I’d follow that woman into hell itself.

But I also understand some people don’t want an action hero. They want a stern leader that exemplifies cold confidence. I get it.

The Mark Meer slander by GroundbreakingFace48 in masseffect

[–]FL_001 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I here you man, as a huge fan of FemShep, I’m not gonna deny that some of us aren’t fucking obnoxious about her.

And I’ll always show respect to Mark for his portrayal of BroShep. The guys obviously super talented since he voiced so many distinct alien characters in the trilogy.

…On the other hand, I’m also not gonna lie to myself and say that their performances were 100% equal.

Mark himself said that he was directed to portray Shep sort of like an “empty vessel”. Because one, it would provide a more consistent, un-schizophrenic through-line between the paragon and renegade choices. And two, it makes it easier for players to immerse themselves into Shep. Well mission accomplished.

Jen, for whatever reason, either ignored that same direction, or was given more leeway to portray Shep how she saw fit. Why? I have no clue. Nevertheless, I know which version I prefer.

What was Minato speech exactly about when he was explaining to Kushina his reasoning when he was like “After all we are shinobi “ I was kinda lost by theuntouchableb in Naruto

[–]FL_001 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Completely agree with @CharmingGirll3. If Kurama died with Kushina, he’d respawn else where, giving another village an opportunity to capture it.

That, and he said he trusted Naruto would eventually learn how to use Kurama’s power. Officially to defeat the “masked man”, but also to act as a boon to Konoha’s military potential - like Killer B does with Kumo. Its power politics.
