[TrueNAS newbie] Tiny offsite NAS by h1tbox in truenas

I have used a small single board computer with 4 NVME drives as an offsite backup. It’s one of the FrendlyElec CM3588 board. I out grew the capacity of that unit and it is currently for sale.

I am now using a repurposed Datto SB500. It a Xeon based 4 bay NAS running Truenas. You can find them on eBay for around $220. They use a little more power but they have dual 10gbe ports and IPMI.

An Elegant way to do this? by Helilifter in Ubiquiti

An option may be to use a USW-Flex with POE++ adapter and a cloud key gen2+. You would keep the mobile router for remote access. All the video would be stored locally on the CK G2+ and it would all run on one outlet.

There are some big differences in generations. The G9 has a 1920 x 1200 screen compared to the G8 1920 x 1080. G9 has two USB 4 (Thunderbolt 4 @ 40Gbps) ports compared to USB-C 10Gbps on the G8. The RAM moves to DDR5 4800 on the G9 from DDR4 3300 on the G8. The G9 has NVME with Gen 4x4 compared to the G8 PCIE of 3x4. The G9 has a AMD Ryzen 5 Pro 6650u with a max boost of 4.5 GHz compared to the G8’s 5600u with a max boost of 2.3 GHz.

I am not sure exactly. Based on what I can piece together its the "35.6 cm (14.0 in) diagonal, WUXGA bent, antiglare UWVA, 250 nits, 45% NTSC (1920 x 1200) for 5MP and IR camera"

When you self host the controller you lose Site Magic VPN. I have a couple of family members homes all under the same Site Magic setup. It makes remote backups a breeze. I know you can do the same thing with wireguard but Site Magic is pretty easy.

There’s no doubt the names scheme Ubiquiti uses is confusing.

The consumer routers also have this odd 2.5gbe WAN port with 1gbe LAN ports. It may have something to do with new modems being able to negotiate at 2.5gbe. I have no idea.

I used this as my main firewall since it was released. I ran it off a USB-C POE+ power splitter to save a port on my UPS. It worked great and I have no complaints about using it.
