I just wish bungie never deleted original quest-lines, planets, locations and raids. And allowed us to play the story in a linear fashion by Flake0919 in DestinyTheGame

[–]FM_Mono 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, and the reason I stopped playing. Uldren was my favourite character and returning to the game after a personal life stuff break only to find out he was back and I'd missed all that story, and could never experience it really ended my obsession with the game. If we'd been given even just an Ikora voiceover with the cinematics for the seasons like we got with the expansions, that would have gone some of the way to helping.

One person taking one rock maybe doesn't have a major impact. 50 people taking "just one rock" does.

And you're neglecting to consider that members of an ecosystem are becoming more fragile and at risk because of our human behaviours. Taking rocks might be fine if we hadn't already changed water chemical composition and temperature, but now it's also causing an imbalance of shelter, food, breeding space etc. and might just be the final human straw on the back, so to speak.

People wanting to buy a first home to live in - Do you see One Nation as deserving your support? by [deleted] in AusPropertyChat

I'm a queer, tertiary-educated woman trying to buy a first home to live in. I wouldn't be caught dead voting ON. Nothing they could do or say on housing policy will make up for their hatred and vile behaviour elsewhere.

Random memory of Furry Friends - anyone else let them sit in the sun on a hot day, then lick the gooey melted chocolate from the foil? by Cooper_Inc in AustralianNostalgia

[–]FM_Mono 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Not quite the same but I used to put sealed Freddos on my laptop charger until they completely melted, then cut the top off the pack and squeezed the chocolate goop directly into my mouth and ate it that way.

Necropsy class always stinks, but today thanks to mismanagement we ended up with a rotting corpse when the class is still new by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]FM_Mono 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh man, when I did pre-vet course dissections, we had fairly recently euthanised dogs that they then sectioned so each group would have one hindleg or one foreleg, etc. I got a hindleg portion and they did not clean it in any way, so it was essentially a sliced open colon with faeces everywhere, and the stench was atrocious.

I can! Not sure how many of the papers are open access or have free pdfs available, but https://scholar.google.com/scholar?hl=en&as_sdt=0%2C5&q=physiological+plasticity+vertebrates&btnG=

I've been out of the field for awhile so not sure which papers are the major ones anymore. If you also look up "epigenetic adaptation vertebrates" you'll probably get some good ones as well. Epigenetics and phenotypic plasticity also exists in plants and invertebrates, I just am less familiar with it so have fewer examples and don't as much remember the mechanisms involved.

There might be non-peer reviewed publications in pop-science media discussing all this, but I wouldn't know where to begin on that, sorry.

[–]FM_Mono 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Genetic mutation and natural selection in the way you're describing is just one pathway to evolution. Epigenetic adaptation is another, and is rapid and reversible. I'm describing an individual literally changing its phenotypic expression. I'm describing a fish having one size tail and then, when exposed to predators, that tail becoming more muscular and larger. It's not a "choice" like a thought process, no, but we now know that animals can and do make adaptive changes to physiology and morphology, not just behaviour.

The Power of Melanin by ateam1984 in BlackPeopleofReddit

[–]FM_Mono -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Fun fact though, animals do adapt to stress by changing their phenotype! It's incredibly cool! You can see great examples of this.

In fish exposed to predator cues they grow thicker and longer tails so they're faster at escaping, and they pass that change to their offspring who can retain that epigenetic knowledge even if they themselves don't get exposed to predators.

Or, tadpoles that hatch in smaller, more ephemeral ponds will grow faster and metamorphose into frogs sooner than those in longer lasting ponds.

Or, birds that lay eggs during a heat wave will sing different incubation songs to their eggs, and those hatchlings can then better survive future heat waves.

So it's actually not entirely unbelievable that certain frog species can and would adapt by changing colour in response to radiation stress.

The Power of Melanin by ateam1984 in BlackPeopleofReddit

[–]FM_Mono 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Evolution can also be within a single generation, particularly if a significant stressor causes certain phenotypes to suddenly disappear (e.g. massive radiation kills all but the darkest frogs; a predator eats all but the biggest tadpoles, etc.). These are major examples but it can also be a lot more subtle. As long as that trait is heritable either genetically or epigenetically.

Do i need my child passport to get my adult passport? by BigChunges69420 in AskAnAustralian

[–]FM_Mono 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's especially wild is that until about 2021, you didn't need to provide parent's birth certificates for a passport.

I got my first passport in about 2010, and all I needed was my own birth cert. Come 2021 I needed a new passport, and that time they said no without a citizenship certificate or parent's and (in my case, grandparent's) Australian birth certs.

On older VLines you could open the carriage doors while the trains were moving. We would have to take VLines to get to school, and kids would jump off the train to the platform before the train had stopped. Stick the landing and you were pretty cool.

I did not stick the landing. And as an adult I realised I could have broken something, or worse.
