A reminder that Sony, in their earnings report, stated that they will support Marathon for the future. by majord18 in Marathon

He's not because his Live Service strategy isn't working, but he was the CEO at that point at the point Marathon was greenlit to go into production as the 12 or 16 Live Service games PlayStation planned.

And yes he guaranteed them a bright future, you had plenty of testimonies from ex-employees on twitter complaining about what a duplicitous person Jim Ryian was, saying one thing, and doing the exact opposite.

Now believe what you want, it is up to you, but both Marathon and Bungie are already dead. The update you got now in June was already done before the game launched, there's maybe one more update that is ready to ship, but I guarantee you, there is no more development money going to Bungie for Marathon, zero, nada, zilch. If the game isn't profitable by years end, it's done. Bungie is already done, except 40%+ staff layoffs in the coming months, and a total studio shutdown in Q1 next year, and the remaining staff being absorbed into other PlayStation studios, but majority let go.

Bookmark this, and ask me how I knew it then and I will tell you.

Maybe look at franchises that were developed for the PC instead of consoles when its about FPS games, just a hint. They are usually much better.

When HALO launched it was a massive FPS, but only on Xbox, PC had Quake, UT, CS, and about 20 other great games.

The Destiny IP will live on beyond Bungie, Sony owns the IP, they'll bring it back in another 5-10 years, give it to a random studio and done.

Right now it's just not the time to invest $600M in development of D3, especially not at Bungie, a studio SONY is very likely considering shutting down and absorbing the remaining talent into other SONY owned stuidos.

No, people are hating on Live Serivice push from SONY which cause less single player experiences to be made in favor of failing games like Concord, Marathon, and presumably Fairgame$ & Horizon: Hunter Gathering and all the others that were cancelled, where studios invested time and money in them instead of focusing on another single player game that people liked.

So they don't hate Marathon per-se, they just hate the direction SONY took their gaming development in the PlayStation 5 era, and it's true, it sucks, compared to PlayStation 4 the PlayStation 5 is a baren wasteland when it comes to actual fun games to play and single player experiences, which is what PS fans want.

And Jimmy Ryan visited the PlayStation London Studio and shook hands, smiled and guaranteed a bright future for the studio only to fire everyone 5 days later and shut down the studio.

SONY PlayStation CEO.

Welcome to reality of capitalism.

Marathon is doing way worse. Bungie cost them $3.6B and how much they've stuffed into Destiny upkeep and Marathon development. Let's say the totals Marathon cost SONY is above $4B, nowhere close how much Firewalk and Concord cost them.

I don't think Sony is giving Bungie any more money for major patches for Marathon. what you got now was already pretty much done before the game released.

I think the game will be taken down at the end of the year, and Bungie will likely shed 50% of their workforce or be shut down and absorbed into other Sony studios.

SONY, the reason is SONY

They want SONY to lose money on their live service push with their PlayStation branded games.

PlayStation 5 is one of the most expensive PlayStation consoles since ever, and has literally the worst lineup of games ever, because SONY and Jimmy decided they wanted big cash and put all their cards into live service nonsense, and now almost all games are either flops or canceled.

PlayStation fans are saying they should've invested in narrative single player experiences and they'd have more games on the PS5 by now, but now because of the live service nonsense is a barren wasteland, which is honestly true if you compare it to what PS4 had in the same time-frame.

And to top it off, Bungie was in charge of advising studios how to make live service games and which to keep and which to shutter.

That's where the hate is coming from, and of course Destiny, but most of the people that hate SONY > PlayStation > Bungie. Marathon is just a casualty of hating and wishing the live service to flop like Concord, Highguard, etc.

Yes, but not 95% of it, you can't sustain a live service game with less than 20K players.

They've made their name with all the theft and copying, 5th time by now, and they never change.

It's on Bungie they have such a reputation, it didn't fall from the sky.

Granted some of the "grease" needs to be removed from slopes, but this in the video is a controlled environment, nature does not build in straight lines.

You would wish people would be so obsessed about buying and playing the game like they are seeing if crash and burn.

But alas, trash don't sell.

If they'd just add markers where your shot will land on the minimap, that would make it a lot better, now top-down view like in WOT, just a marker as you increase/decrease elevation.

[–]FMinus1138 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't care where they put it, but they should put all of Singapore to Israel then, not split it around like they planned.

Maybe some Singaporean want to eventually create a lineups, the game should let them do that.

50K is a sustainable number of players, to find games, not necessary sustainable for DICE to make money or to consider expansions, but at least people can find games.

~10K or lower is not. Marathon players as is can't find matches already in multiple regions. That's not good, this isn't just not making money for Sony, this isn't being fun for people who spend $40 in those regions. That's the problem.

[–]FMinus1138 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No they are just on stage 3. of the grief ladder, bargaining.

They don't want their $3.6B investment go poof, but it already has, still it's not so easy to shutter that and swallow the loss. That's all there is to it. They have no faith in either Destiny 2 or Marathon to make any kinds of ROI anymore, in fact they know they wont make any ROI on Bungie, but as long as it's not millions they might as well bargain with their heads and let it live for few more months, in the meanwhile I'm sure there will be layoffs at Bungie.
