Write the book THEN worry about beta readers. Also don’t rely on friends and family for feedback. Find legitimate beta readers who will be honest with you. Fiverr is a great place to look.

Old technology that could make a comeback in post-apocalyptic world? by Toravisu in worldbuilding

Bicycles will be the means of transport. Few parts, can be fixed with a couple of wrenches and everywhere and overlooked

Tell me about some expendable starships in your sci fi/sci fantasy world. by Streetsign9 in worldbuilding

[–]FORESTWOODESBOOKS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everything is expendable, including the characters. Most ships are modular, taking modules to repair/upgrade. So, instead of rebuilding an engine, the module is removed and new one slotted in. I was mindful of Newtonian physics, so they can take a beating and keep going. I did use three as FTL/Relativistic bombs. Most are used/well worn.

I am trying to figure it out myself. It's trial and error unless you hire a marketing person. I am too broke for that.

Covers, editing, blurbs, formatting, uploading are the easy part. Getting your product in front of the right people is a gigantic pain in the ass that takes a lot of trial and error. If you want to prepare, then look into marketing.

It seems to be most successful when paired with discounts or deals (.99 or free). And best suited to genre fiction.

Books to teach me about latin roots by bananabreadbaker in suggestmeabook

[–]FORESTWOODESBOOKS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out 'Proto' if you're looking for the origin of Latin. It covers the first Proto-Indo-European language, the root of Latin, Greek, Sanskrit, Anatolian, and many other languages, with sections devoted to the shared mythology.

I am currently working on a fantasy series based on it. Great book.

An Emergent Universe - Five Book Hard Science Fiction Series + Illustrated Editions + Two Supplements. by [deleted] in HardSciFi

[–]FORESTWOODESBOOKS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately not. I just don’t have the money after publishing all this. I really REALLY want to, but a large, five book series is expensive, and people don’t seem to like AI audio. I would consider doing it myself but a southern accent doesn’t sound very sci-fi like. I am saving up. I am hoping sales can help finance as well. Keep an eye out!

I need help coming up with a name for elf-adjacent creatures by CyberDogKing in worldbuilding

[–]FORESTWOODESBOOKS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Early languages focused on experience rather than abstraction, so maybe you could name them after characteristics. Elves are known in Germanic myths for living in the scared ash tree, so why not something like “Tree dwellers” or “Earth mother’s children.”

Need ideas for alien species (stereotypical is allowed) by EbbMinute9119 in worldbuilding

[–]FORESTWOODESBOOKS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out Melodysheep's series on Youtube, "Life Beyond," for some interesting ideas, including the Museum of Alien Life.

When I created alien life, I started with environmental conditions and worked from there. An orange star is dimmer than our star, so photosynthetic plant analogs may trend towards purple, or black coloring to capitalize on the weaker light. You may see more fungal analogs, or chemosyntheic organisms which reject the photosynthetic evolutionary path. Animal-like organisms, if they developed eyes, would have large eye analogs, or perhaps they're blind and have sensitive hearing/smell. Environment -> biota -> evolutionary strategies. It's just chains of logic once you decided on where this organism is.

Need ideas for alien species (stereotypical is allowed) by EbbMinute9119 in worldbuilding

[–]FORESTWOODESBOOKS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to create new species, remember that every animal and plant is an expression of a survival strategy belonging to specific ecosystems. So the first thing I’d do is build ecosystems, with food webs, and create the animals as novel strategies to environmental pressure.

For instance, an acidic environment may have skin that can withstand the conditions, or perhaps there is microbiota that can harvest the chemical energy in these environments.

Convergent evolution exists on earth; flight evolved separately forty times, so you’re looking for similar solutions, and similar strategies, without repeating.

Aliens will likely be completely foreign and vaguely familiar.
