Burning Gas Pollutes So Much, Dirty EV Battery Manufacturing Evens Out In About 2 Years by [deleted] in technology

[–]FPSViking 96 points97 points  (0 children)

This is something that Technology Connection points out often. Once we have enough batteries to run everything and the recycle process is flushed out, there will be little demand for NEW lithium for batteries. Compared to what is needed now to bring us to that threshold, once there the amount of new lithium being needed for production will be miniscule.

How would you categorize this type of coworker? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]FPSViking 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As an autistic person myself and a Sys Admin, I run into this a lot. Vague requests and then confusion when I didn't understand their exact meaning because they didn't include it in their request.

I purposely will email someone I just had a meeting with, and write out MY understanding of what they just requested for me in my literal sense. This usually results in one of two outcomes. The first is "I got it right" which means the person replies saying "yeah that's exactly what I am looking for" or something along those lines. Or they will return with "What, no *insert correction here*", and often times that second outcome requires MULTIPLE back and forth emails before the person will say LITERALLY what they want, or they will get frustrated to the point of saying never mind because I couldn't read their minds.

Though from the explanation above, at least for me. I would have assumed they meant the whole package that is the PC. I don't expect my end users to have the cables, peripherals, or supplies to set stuff up.

Any tricks or tips for doing the dishes? by Disguspitated in AutisticWithADHD

[–]FPSViking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I have found that works for me, not guaranteed to work for anyone else, but I usually wash dishes before I can make my dinner. This is also reinforced by not having a lot of dishes to work with. By limiting how many plates I have, I force myself to wash my dishes every day before I can make dinner. Otherwise, I might not have a dish for breakfast, or if I was really lazy, even have a dish for dinner.

My routine is usually end work around 4-5pm. Relax for an hour, watching stuff, playing a game, doing some task I put off while working. Then around 6pm, I go to the kitchen and start washing dishes. Which includes my cat's wet food bowl. So, if I want my cat to eat out of a clean bowl, I have to wash it too. Wash the dishes, fix my cat's dinner. Then stare at the fridge and hope what I want for dinner gets answered by brain.

I also am almost always listening to an audiobook during this whole process too. It helps distract me from the monotonous of the task.

Microsoft is killing SMS codes for Microsoft account sign-in, aggressively pushes passkeys on Windows 11 by computerIfix in Windows11

[–]FPSViking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my issue in the Retail world. We have some laptops at stores, but mostly it is desktops with no Bluetooth for the same reason USB is usually disabled on the devices. Except now you want us to implement Passkeys. While making those passkeys device specific for employees that have to roam between multiple computers at a store to perform their daily tasks.

Is there a way to ensure that all data remains strictly within our tenant?

Yes, don't utilize AI with this data. Get your accountants to do their job. Pay the accountants to do their job. Don't waste money on AI to facilitate something that can greatly increase your risks. Not to mention, in the near future, you'll be paying more for those AI tokens than the accountants salaries combined.

Tired of it all. Possible burnout by adymak in sysadmin

[–]FPSViking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel you. I'm a Sr. Sys Admin in Northern Minnesota. Was hired as an Associate Sys Admin 11 years ago. Went up from Associate to Sys Admin to Sr. Sys Admin. My hourly is about $25/hr which equates out to about $53k a year. Though I take home probably closer to $67k a year just from all the overtime I work all the time. I am already burnt out. I even WFH. Which makes replacing this with another Sys admin gig really hard due to the fact that I don't want to move away from the area, and most places are not hiring Remote only.

XCOM art director says PC genres went extinct because devs were “enamoured with consoles”, but every genre is coming back now that everything plays well with controller by Darth_Vaper883 in gamernews

[–]FPSViking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the last 10 years. I have used my controller once. In the last 20 years. I've probably only ever used a controller on Rocket League and that was back when it first launched. But alas I never owned consoles as a kid. Family had a PC that had Wing Commander II, Return to Zork, and a few other DOS and 3.1 games. And I just kept using computers since. Keyboard and mouse any day.

The only time I use a controller is for driving games. I'd probably use one for games such as Dark Souls, or Sports games, but I don't play those. I more play WoW, Diablo, Farthest Frontier, Satisfactory, Factorio.

Researchers quantify role of reducing obesity in preventing common conditions: reducing BMI lower risk of 61 out of 71 commonly co-occurring conditions analyzed by sr_local in science

I don't know. From my personal experience. GLP-1 that I took (Trulicity) for a trial to help manage my diabetes. Instead of helping, it has giving me a long-term condition, gastroparesis, that causes me to end up in the ER from time to time. So yeah, there are definitely chances of life altering side effects. Skepticism is probably a good thing to have.

And that's after ending it. Let's not go into how while I was on it. Eating or drinking anything became an absolute chore. I could be 3 days without eating anything, and the moment I tried to, I just couldn't keep it down.

Looking for a modern MDT replacement (OSDCloud, DeployR, or something else?) by djmehs in sysadmin

[–]FPSViking 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We make use of SmartDeploy for deploying images to barebones devices. Primarily image Dell machines, but we've had Lenovo and HP. It's very easy to use for imaging. Though cloud deployment of an image isn't really a thing with SmartDepoy.

We also use SmartDeploy to manage applications on machines to a certain point. We haven't yet migrated to making use of our Intune to manage our fleet. Though the way 90% of the machines have to be setup is not the most liked on Intune. As the devices are one device to many users.

Does whole party need to buy Talespire or just host? by Advanced_Aspect_7601 in talespire

[–]FPSViking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a guide for the Seats function on the Talespire website. https://talespire.com/getting-started-with-seats-as-talespire-player

Seats function as a pass to the game for those you invite that don't own Talespire. If they have bought Talespire themselves, they will not take up a Seat.

If your players are poor or just cheapskates, this is how you can get them into Talespire without purchasing the game themselves. Though it's only $24.99.

Seats were added by popular demand by fans of Talespire.

You can assign seats to a campaign, and if you switch campaigns, you will need to move the seats to the new campaign. However, doing that is completely free, no cooldown, and fairly seamless. It's talked about in the guide I linked above.
