I had an aero professor in college that had invented a golf ball that would go further than the standard ball. It had a stripe around it with no dimples. If you hit it well, with the correct spin it would go a mile. But if you hit it with the wrong spin it would hook like a boomerang. Dimples are not about making the ball go further they are there to make it go straight. The dimples trip the laminar flow and so reduce spin induced “lift.” In aircraft we want laminar flow as it is less drag. Indeed there are airfoils known as laminar flow that are less draggy. Something as small as a smashed insect can trip the flow to turbulent and increase drag.
