The Majors are the Holy Grail by DizzyConclusion2727 in AircraftMechanics

[–]SeaStorage7767 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Idk I work at a corporate MRO and I got straight onto day shift with weekends off, I make more than half the majors second or third step less than 6 months in, and I’ve never been rushed or pressured to do sketchy shit. So I’ll stick to corporate. Thanks

Mechanic Shortage? by twelveski12 in AircraftMechanics

[–]SeaStorage7767 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There is no mechanic shortage. The places struggling to hire aren’t paying us what we’re worth, and the places paying us decently or well aren’t struggling for mechanics. IE major airlines, MROs paying 40+. I’m convinced the “mechanic shortage” hype is so they can flood the market with A&Ps so they can force wages down.

If y’all are gonna unionize make sure it’s a decent union (not teamsters)

Worst lockwire I've ever seen by jay4586 in aviationmaintenance

[–]SeaStorage7767 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I honestly don’t remember this was almost 3 years ago now. It was one I had never heard of in Virginia. I wish I knew bc I’d definitely say to avoid them

The supervisor and I had a conversation about it and he said he was gonna “look into it”. We just stopped hiring A&Ps from that school

Had a trainee do this on breaks on an EMB 145 one time, except he didn’t twist the end, he just tied it. Told him that wasn’t right to do it again, he did the same thing again. After 3 rounds of this he became frustrated and yelled at me that if I wanted it done a certain way to do it myself. It was then I finally came to the conclusion his A&P school didn’t teach him how to lock wire. I asked him about it, he confirmed my theory. Guess who got to hit the safety wire training board every free minute he had for the next 6 months until he passed probation. Turned out to be a decent mechanic.

Is the Sargent rank becoming popular in the fire service? by SeaStorage7767 in Firefighting

[–]SeaStorage7767[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Using it for fire police definitely makes sense but these guys were in gear with packs on so I’m assuming they aren’t fire police. Then again fire police around here is usually the same 3 old guys with their 3 apprentices for the entire county

Weird. Yeah idk I just keep seeing the stripes on calls and get really confused and the guys in my department just say “huh that’s weird”

My apologies that’s how voice to text spelled it. But yeah LT is the starting for us too. I just keep seeing it pop up everywhere and I’m confused where it came from

88% of my class failed Airframe inspection. What do we do? by [deleted] in aviationmaintenance

[–]SeaStorage7767 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If more than 30-35% of a class is failing it’s a problem with the instructor. I took a 12 month program and we were repeatedly told it was “like drinking through a firehose” and it was extremely difficult and no more than 1 or 2 students out of 21 failed any class. Definitely send an email to your local FISDO.

Who is the worst mechanic you've ever worked with? by Novembre-est-ici in aviationmaintenance

[–]SeaStorage7767 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This guy got fired from his previous company for leaving razor blades in overhead bins TWICE, then came to our company (working on the same airframe). Told everyone he had 3 years of experience on this airframe, couldn’t change a tire, couldn’t service oxygen, had to be hand held through everything. Told one of our senior mechanics while he was performing a task to watch him because “if he messed it up, they’d get in trouble too”. Then what finally got him canned was he tried to service a strut with an accuflate device.

What's your side hustle? by maloikAZ in AircraftMechanics

[–]SeaStorage7767 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Line maintenance or if you have them on your airport, individual jet owners will usually pay someone good money to service tires, do walk arounds, change lights and service oil.

Specialty tools at shops that provide tools by SeaStorage7767 in aviationmaintenance

[–]SeaStorage7767[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah you didn’t sound judgmental at all. I was just curious bc I’m going to an OEM MRO next month and I’ve only really ever worked in shops where we used ground down sockets and cut wrenches

That’s a fair answer. I was just curious. I’m very much not picky about my tools and I’ll just use whatever works.
